Mark Hamill was ready to quit but his wife had other ideas
Gosling appeared with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, writer Drew Goddard and author Andy Weir, who wrote the book on which the film is based. And they brought their Comic-Con A-game, screening the first five minutes of the film to rapturous applause.
In the film, Gosling plays an astronaut named Ryland Grace who wakes up on a spaceship 'with no memory of himself or his mission [and] slowly deduces he is the sole survivor of a crew sent to the Tau Ceti solar system searching for a solution to a catastrophic event on Earth.'
Not letting that slide by, Paramount threw down a hefty and hilarious sci-fi gauntlet, teasing an episode planned for the fourth season of their flagship Star Trek title Strange New Worlds, in which the cast and guest characters are all played by puppets.
The series will 'boldly explore the puppet-verse,' according to Paramount. A short teaser clip - featuring a puppet-ised Captain Christopher Pike, voiced by actor Anson Mount, was a crowd pleaser in Hall H. (See below for this, and other trailers.) And these puppets will come with real pedigree, created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
An advance screening of an upcoming episode of Strange New Worlds, titled A Space Adventure Hour, was a part-glitchy debut of the show's famous 'holodeck', and part homage of 1950s-style B-movie sci-fi.
While the convention itself was missing some of the majors – no Star Wars projects, and no new movies from either Marvel and DC Comics – DC did send Peacemaker star John Cena, who turned up in full costume, and Peacemaker producer (and Superman director) James Gunn.
In the series, Cena plays patriotic mercenary Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, who first appeared in Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad. The significance of the character has amplified since, as Gunn has taken over management of the entire DC Comics film and TV franchise. His debut film reboot, Superman, is one of the year's movie hits.
Comic-Con's four-day calendar of panels and appearances included Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood, director Rob Reiner, Outlander star Sam Heughan, Captain America Anthony Mackie, NCIS: Tony & Ziva stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, Timothy Olyphant (Alien: Earth), Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride (The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon) and Australian actors Sam Reid, promoting Anne Rice's The Talamasca: The Secret Order, and Ryan Kwanten, promoting Primitive War.
American sports executive Jeanie Buss - the president and controlling owner of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers - also made an appearance on the WOW: Women of Wrestling panel, revealing that as a kid, she was an obsessive fan of both Wonder Woman and Supergirl. (Gunn's new Superman movie, in which Supergirl appears, gets a big thumbs up from her.)
And Star Wars creator George Lucas is scheduled to close the convention with a Hall H appearance to unveil the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, an 11-acre campus in LA's Exposition Park, 'dedicated to the art of illustrated stories.' The museum, which will focus on painting, photography, sculpture, illustration, comic art, performance and video, will open in 2026.
San Diego Comic-Con was launched in 1970, and is now the world's biggest fan convention. The four-day event is sold out, and is expected to sink more than $US150 million ($230 million) into the local economy. The convention wraps Monday, Sydney time.

Gremlins 3 waiting on Spielberg script approval
Gremlins 3 has a script and is waiting on approval from Steven Spielberg. Gremlins lead actor Zach Galligan has revealed that Warner Bros is 'incredibly interested' in making a follow up to 1984's Gremlins 2 and are just waiting on executive producer Spielberg to approve the script. According to Games Radar, Galligan – who played Billy Peltzer in Gremlins and it's sequel - said during an appearance at Comic-Con Manchester: 'After 35 years, they've come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it, apparently it's waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.' Back in April, Warner Bros. Pictures co-chief Pam Abdy, revealed new entries in the Gremlins franchise were in the works. She told Deadline: 'Adding to things we're excited about, Andy Serkis doing the Gollum film, Drew Goddard writing a new Matrix. We're super excited about Amblin developing with Chris Columbus new entries in the Gremlins and Goonies franchises. We just had a dynamite check-in with Philippa Boyens on Gollum, and I think we're about to get that script in May. Cat in the Hat and the second Dr. Seuss adaptation Jon M. Chu is co-directing … there's really great stuff on the horizon.' Gremlins was a horror comedy directed by Joe Dante from a script written by Chris Columbus. The first movie starred Galligan, Phoebe Cates and Hoyt Axton with Howie Mandel voicing the character of Gizmo. In the film, Galligan's character is gifted a mogwai named Gizmo but things go horribly wrong after he fails to follow the three strict rules for looking after him.

The Simpsons creator reveals grim reality behind show's end
36 years and 790 episodes later, The Simpsons is still going, with the show about to enter its 37th season on-air. The animated series' longevity has left some wondering over the years exactly what would make those behind it decide it's time to call it a day. As reported by Variety, The Simpsons ' creator Matt Groening revealed what it would take during a recent appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to promote the next season of the show. 'I honestly thought 36 [seasons] was where we were going to end it,' he confessed, before revealing that there is 'no end in sight. We're going to keep going. We're going to go until somebody dies.' By 'somebody,' he presumably means one of the show's core cast, who have voiced The Simpsons and other key characters in the show ever since it premiered way back in 1989 (and beyond – The Simpsons originated as animated sketches on The Tracey Ullman show in 1987). Some of those performers are certainly getting on: At 81, Harry Shearer – voice of multiple characters including Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy and Principal Skinner – is the oldest key cast member. Julie Kavner, who voices Marge Simpson, is now 74 years old, while Marge's TV children are now voiced by women hovering around retirement age: Nancy Cartwright, who voices Bart, is 67, while the voice of Lisa, Yeardley Smith, is 61. The voice actors' advanced ages have caused occasional upsets among casual viewers, who've been shocked to hear just how old some of their favourite characters sound on the show nowadays. One clip went viral in December 2023, racking up more than 10 million views on social media as people expressed their shock at what Marge sounds like nowadays (hear for yourself in the video at the top of this story). 'Why does marge sound like patty and selma?' one person asked, referring to the character's chain-smoking sisters. Months later, another clip from the show went viral for all the wrong reasons, with casual fans shocked to hear what Mr Burns (voiced by Shearer) sounds like nowadays. One viewer who watched the clip urged those behind The Simpsons to 'let the show rest in peace'. 'Burns' voice is just brutal man. Let these people retire in peace,' said one fan. One key voice actor has called time on the show recently: Pamela Hayden, who voiced Bart's best friend Milhouse among dozens of other characters, announced in November last year that she was quitting aged 70 to 'pursue other creative outlets.' Hayden's voice had featured across almost 700 episodes of the series.
