Caught on video: Elderly man nabbed in Segamat for alleged animal cruelty, abusing neighbour's cat until bloodied
SEGAMAT, May 14 — Police here arrested an elderly man, who is in his 70s, for the alleged abuse of his neighbour's pet cat in Taman Yayasan here yesterday.
Segamat police chief Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the neighbour, who had earlier lodged a missing cat report, had lodged a report against her neighbour alleging that the man had taken and abused her pet.
He said the report was made after the neighbour, a local woman who is in her 20s, discovered a video footage of her Turkish-breed cat being physically abused by her elderly neighbour that was earlier disseminated on social media sites.
'Following that, the woman then came across her neighbour poking at something in the drain at her house.
'After checking, the woman then found her cat in the drain covered in blood and was believed to have been physically abused by the suspect," he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Zamry said through the detailed examination of the video footage, the suspect was clearly beating and throwing the cat into an unoccupied house.
He said police then arrested the suspect at his home at 12.20am to assist in investigations.
'The suspect later admitted to abusing the cat because he felt disturbed after he was questioned by investigators,' he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for animal mischief, Section 29(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for animal abuse and cruelty and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Teoh, a political aide to Ean Yong, died on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death was held, and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

Woman whose car plunged into Pahang river found drowned

(JBPM pic) PETALING JAYA : The woman who was reportedly swept away after her car slid into Sungai Triang near Bandar Baru Bera in Pahang was found drowned this morning. Bera police chief Zulkiflee Nazir said the body of Sakirah Akop, 31, was found floating about 2.5km from where the car had plunged into the river on Monday. Bernama reported him as saying police were informed about the discovery of the body at 8.12am by joggers. The body was taken to Bera Hospital's forensic unit for further action. The woman had been sitting in the car with her baby while her husband was fishing nearby when suddenly, the vehicle began moving towards the river. Her husband managed to save their baby, but she was swept away by the strong current while trying to save herself. A Pahang fire and rescue department spokesman said they received an emergency call at 1.58pm and that a team from the Triang fire and rescue station was dispatched to the scene.

5 dead, others injured in Austrian school attack

(EPA Images pic) VIENNA : At least five people have been killed in an attack at a school in the Austrian city of Graz and others were injured, Austrian media including tabloid Kronen Zeitung reported today. Citing local police, Austrian state media ORF said several people had been seriously injured, including students and teachers. It said the suspected perpetrator, reportedly a pupil, is believed to have killed himself. Police said an operation was underway in a street called Dreierschuetzengasse, on which there is a secondary school, but declined further comment. Police are currently evacuating the building, ORF said.
