NIA arrests suspect in Nov 2024 grenade attack in Srinagar market that killed woman
NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Mushtaq Ahmed Ganie of Budgam district in Kashmir in connection with last year's grenade blast in Srinagar market, which killed a woman and left several people injured, people familiar with the development said on Tuesday.
The blast was carried out by terrorists associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)/Islamic State in Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) and had cross-border links, a NIA officer said.
According to an officer who asked not to be named, Ganie was an overground worker (OGW) and had helped the attackers. 'He was arrested on May 22 and is currently being interrogated about his other associates, including overground workers who have links with different terror groups in the Valley,' said the officer.
The grenade attack took place on November 3, 2024, at the busy Sunday market near TRC, Srinagar, which the NIA has said was carried out to create panic and terror in the region and as part of a broader strategy to disturb public order.
Three persons – Sheikh Usama Yaseen, Umar Fayaz Sheikh and Afnan Mansoor Naik – were charge sheeted earlier this month in the case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, Explosive Substances Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Yaseen, Sheikh and Naik are currently in judicial custody.
In a statement on May 3, NIA said it had uncovered possible involvement of other terror groups in the conspiracy behind the grenade attack and has found that 'the trio had planned, conspired and executed the grenade attack with the intent to create panic and terror in the region'.
'The attack was part of a broader strategy to disturb public order and further the violent agenda of terrorist outfits operating with support from across the border,' it added.

Ludhiana: Groom's dad attacked over inter-caste marriage tiff
A man was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted in Ludhiana by the family members of a woman who had recently married against her their wish. The incident happened in Gill Colony, Daba, on Saturday night. The victim, Jayant Kumar, was reportedly taken from his home by the woman's angry relatives after his son, Sooraj Kumar, married Mandeep Kaur through court on June 3. The couple had gone into hiding after their marriage. Sooraj's mother, Sarita Devi, said her son worked in a private company and was in a relationship with Mandeep, his colleague. Despite opposition from Mandeep's family, they got married and went to live together at an unknown location. Sarita said that on June 7, Mandeep's brothers — Vikramjit, Jaswinder, and Narinder Singh — along with their uncle Manjeet Singh and an associate named Kaushal, came to their house and demanded to know the couple's location. When the family said they didn't know, the group forcefully took Jayant Kumar with them. 'They kidnapped my husband and left. I saw Kaushal, my son's friend, helping them. I called the police right away,' said Sarita. She added that after the police contacted the accused, they sent her husband back in an auto-rickshaw. He had been badly beaten. Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurwinder Singh from Daba police station said an FIR has been registered under Sections 140(3) (kidnapping) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused, who are all from the Sahnewal area. He said arrests would be made soon. 'The medical report of Jayant Kumar is awaited. More charges could be added based on the report,' he said. Similar incident in May Earlier, on May 17, a woman was abducted from her home in Ghalib Kalan village by the enraged family members of a girl who had allegedly eloped with the woman's nephew. The Jagraon Sadar police rescued the woman within hours and arrested four persons involved in the crime within hours. The victim, Kirna Devi, aunt of migrant labourer Jai Kumar, was forcibly taken from her home around 11pm by four members of the aggrieved family. Jai Kumar, a native of Jhansi of Uttar Pradesh and currently working at a farmhouse in Ghalib Kalan, had reportedly eloped with a girl from the Jhansi-based family, promising to marry her. A case in connection with the elopement had already been registered against him at a police station in Jhansi.

Teenage Bike Thief Caught Red-Handed by Ganeshpeth Police
Nagpur: A teenager, married at only 13 years of age, and already entrenched in a life of crime, was apprehended by Ganeshpeth police for masterminding multiple motorcycle thefts. Driven by the thrill of joyrides with friends and the lure of quick cash, the teenager earned notoriety as a prolific bike thief, keeping the city's police on high alert. The Ganeshpeth Police, led by senior inspector Machhindra Pandit, recovered five stolen motorcycles, abandoned across various locations after joyrides, following the suspect's rounding up on June 5. The action occurred when the police team, including head constable Sameer Shaikh and Vaibhav Jadhav — who had earlier nabbed the same teenager — spotted him acting suspiciously near a parking slot at Central Ganeshpeth bus stand. The case is now being probed by investigation officer, sub-inspector Malhari Doiphode. Caught preparing to steal another bike, the juvenile, identified as a child in conflict with law, confessed to stealing a black Honda CB Shine (MH 49 BJ 8039) from Bajeria. Further interrogation led to the recovery of four additional stolen motorcycles: a Hero Honda Splendor Plus, a Honda Splendor Plus, a Honda Splendor, and a Pulsar 220, collectively valued at approximately Rs1.85 lakh. The case originated from a complaint filed by Pravin Gaudiya, a 41-year-old Bajeria resident, who reported his Honda CB Shine missing on May 25. The theft occurred after Gaudiya parked and locked his motorcycle outside his home on May 24, only to find it gone the next morning. The Ganeshpeth police registered the case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on June 6 and launched an investigation. The teenager's early marriage and exposure to criminal influences fuelled his descent into delinquency, said police. His passion for reckless rides and peer pressure played a significant role in his criminal activities. The police are now probing potential links to a larger theft network. The juvenile was handed over to authorities for proceedings under the Juvenile Justice Act. This case underscores the rising issue of juvenile crime in Nagpur, prompting calls for community intervention and stronger preventive measures.

Delhi man kills girlfriend in hotel, stays with corpse for a night
A 29-year-old woman was assaulted and strangled to death inside a hotel room in central Delhi's Paharganj allegedly by her 31-year-old boyfriend on Saturday, police said on Sunday, adding that the accused, who stayed with the woman's body during the night, has been arrested. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (central) Nidhin Valsan said the Nabi Karim police received a call at 9.47am on Sunday from the staff at Hotel Rohit Deluxe in Paharganj. The caller told police that a couple had stayed overnight in a room. In the morning, they saw the man leave hurriedly while the woman was found lying motionless inside the bathroom. DCP Valsan said their relationship was estranged because the victim had an affair with another person, which angered the suspect and led to the murder. Around 8.30am on Sunday, the hotel staff noticed the man leaving. Subsequently, they discovered the woman lying in the bathroom and informed police,' said Valsan. Police said the hotel staff checked the room on their own as the door was not locked, and the woman was unresponsive to knocks and the doorbell. Further probe also revealed that during the stay, they ordered pizza and lassi through room service at 6pm on Saturday. The staff, in their statement, claimed they did not hear or see anything suspicious at the time, the officer said. 'The couple worked together in a clock manufacturing unit in Delhi. They were in a relationship for the past few years. The man recently learnt that she was having an affair with another person. She had been distancing herself from him but he did not want to let her go. The two argued in the hotel room over the issue on Saturday. The man assaulted her and then strangled her using a drawstring,' the officer said. The couple had used their Aadhaar cards to check in, according to which the man was a resident of Malka Ganj in north Delhi and the woman was from Burari, also in north Delhi. Valsan said the accused was arrested on Sunday evening from northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar. After the medical examination findings confirmed murder, a case was registered under section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Nabi Karim police station and teams were formed to track down the man, an officer said, asking not to be named. 'Through technical surveillance and human intelligence, his location was traced to the Ashok Vihar area. He was nabbed and he confessed to killing his girlfriend out of anger. He first beat her up and then strangled her,' added the officer. On Sunday afternoon, HT visited the hotel and spoke to Prakash Shukla, the cousin of hotel owner Rohit Kumar. 'My cousin has been out of Delhi for the past three-four days. I came to the hotel when the manager called me around 8am. I do not know what exactly happened. The manager and other staff are at the police station,' said Shukla.
