Frank Grillo Talks About Why His DC Character Has Been So Much More Fulfilling Than His Marvel Role Ever Was — GeekTyrant
Frank Grillo is one of the few in the club of those who have played characters in both the DC and Marvel Universes. He played Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones, in the Marvel movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016).
He returned to voice the character in the series What If…? , and appeared in Avengers: Endgame . Though his appearance was brief, he's kept himself busy in other franchises, namely DC, and he's a lot happier with this arc over there than he ever was at Marvel.
During a recent appearance on the Tulsa King panel at Fan Expo Dallas, moderated and hosted by ScreenRant, Grillo looked back on his time with the MCU, while sharing why he is having a better time being part of the DCU franchise.
After discussing the MCU's Crossbones, Grillo explained what the upside is to playing a character like Flag Sr. in the DCU while working together with James Gunn:
'Rick Flag Sr... It was unfortunate because Crossbones isn't onscreen that much, and this is years ago. People love that character, and Marvel seems to have reused every other character except Crossbones.
'Now he's popping up in Spider-Man comics and Daredevil comics because he's a great villain, so I was expecting to have a lot of fun with it. But unfortunately, he perished kind of quickly. But I love working with James Gunn.
''I did the voice for Creature Commandos, and then I'm in Peacemaker, which is coming up in August. And before that, it's Superman with Rick Flag. So, it's different; it's more of an adventure than the Marvel stuff was.'
Grillo's Flag Sr. makes his live-action debut with Superman in July, before returning in Peacemaker season 2.

Disney Plus Reveals Updated MCU Timeline
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown exponentially since the release of Iron Man in 2008. Now, nearly two decades later in 2025, the MCU timeline has been updated via Disney Plus. Peacemaker season 2 trailer seems to embrace the Multiverse as John Cena's antihero meets his doppelganger

A new trailer for Peacemaker season 2 has arrived - and it's already packing in cameos, surprises, and major teases about what's to come as the fan favorite streaming series returns. In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, we see John Cena suit up once again as Peacemaker for an interview with the Justice League, specifically with Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Guy Gardner. But things don't go exactly as planned. Have a look: Along with the appearance of the Justice League, we learn that the season will focus on Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. hunting down Peacemaker for killing his son back in The Suicide Squad. We get some flashes of heavy action, some heartfelt moments with the cast, and a hilarious introduction to some new characters. But that's not all - the trailer ends with Peacemaker passing through what appears to be a doorway to another reality to confront another version of himself from the Multiverse. Could this be the mechanism that brings together the continuity of the recently relaunched DC Studios with the previous version? Or is this something else entirely, a misdirection? The returning cast includes Freddie Stroma's Adrian Chase, Steve Agee as John Economos, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, and Danielle Brooks' Leota Adebayo. We also have Tim Meadows, Sol Rodriguez, David Denman, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. - who, if you might recall, has some unfinished business with Peacemaker. Season 1 hit HBO and Max in 2022, prior to James Gunn and Peter Safran's takeover of DC. The overhaul and new slate of projects had some fans worried that Peacemaker wouldn't make the cut, but the hero fits right in DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. James Gunn says Peacemaker season 2 has a "really, really, really big cameo" as he teases key connections between the HBO show and the upcoming Superman

All eyes might be in Superman right now as it is the first movie in the new DC Universe (DCU), but James Gunn is already teasing many surprises and cameos for the upcoming Peacemaker season 2. The show is set to return in August after a three-year hiatus. According to the DC boss, that big gap in between seasons has allowed him to weave the story into the DCU in a more organic way. "I developed it along the way, in conjunction with the other DC projects that we're doing, so it's very much connected to Superman and it's very much connected to what comes after," Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. "I had a rough idea of what I was going to do, but it was actually quite different than what the show ended up being," he added. The first Peacemaker season 2 trailer already revealed some unexpected cameos from the new Superman, including Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, and Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord. They are not the only ones, though. "You've seen what we call the QUC, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in the first season of Peacemaker, and we see more about that technology in Superman," Gunn explains about the connections between the HBO show and Superman, revealing that "the QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker season 2". "We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the [season], [including] Isabela and Nathan and Sean, and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman. There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show," he teased. Could that big cameo also be from Superman? Could it be Superman himself, or even Supergirl? Or is it perhaps related to the old DCEU? We will have to wait and see how DC Studios' grand plans in DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters unfold. As for the plot for Peacemaker season 2, Gunn also revealed that the story will follow John Cena's hero while he struggles to be taken seriously among the superhero community. "We come into season 2 with Peacemaker knowing that he saved the world from the Butterflies. He thinks he's a big star now, and he should be a real superhero. And we see at the very beginning of episode 1 that he's meeting with the group of superheroes from Superman, and he's basically interviewing for membership in the group. But they just mock him the entire time, so he's not taken seriously," he said. Peacemaker season 2 will be released on August 21, 2025.
