The Philadelphia Phillies' starting rotation has been one of the best in baseball this season. Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez, and Christopher Sanchez have been dominant, especially in the last month.

The same cannot be said for Jesus Luzardo. After his latest outing, this time against the Cincinnati Reds, Luzardo's ERA jumped up to 4.44. He managed only two innings, allowing five earned runs and six hits.
His struggles are of major concern for the Phillies, and Matt Gelb of The Athletic shared a statistic that points towards his struggles recently.
Since June 5th, when Luzardo changed his mechanics from the stretch, he has had a "drastic gap in his performance," according to Gelb.
With no one on base, Luzardo has a .226 batting average allowed, with a .294 OBP, a .242 slugging percentage, six walks, and 23 strikeouts in 68 plate appearances.

But, with runners on, and pitching out of the stretch, Luzardo is allowing batters to hit .423/.492/.692 with seven walks and 11 strikeouts in 59 plate appearances.

It's a stark difference for Luzardo, and it points to his struggles from the stretch, which have caused his blowup outings. If he can keep runners off the base paths, he pitches well. But once runners get on, the traffic doesn't stop.
Luzardo's season has been the tale of two halves. Through his first 11 starts, Luzardo had a 2.15 ERA and a 5-0 record with 77 strikeouts and 19 walks. But, since May 31st, things have gone very poorly.

He's started seven games in that span, has an ERA of 9.49, and has struck out 38 batters while walking 16. Despite his struggles, the potential is still there, evident by his six-inning outing against the Chicago Cubs and 6.2-inning outing against the New York Mets.
But he's struggled too much lately, and after his latest start, there is palpable concern with the back end of the rotation in Philadelphia. Mick Abel was sent down, Andrew Painter is struggling in Triple-A, and Luzardo can't find his stuff.
The sheer difference in performance for Luzardo with runners on and off the base paths is of major concern. If he can't figure things out soon, the Phillies could be in trouble with the back end of their rotation.

Mariano Rivera Shows Why Old-Timers' Game Can Be A Very Painful Experience

NEW YORK — Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera tore an Achilles tendon while going after a fly ball at the New York Yankees' Old-Timers' Day game on Saturday and needs surgery. Agent Fern Cuza said the 55-year-old closer, baseball's career leader in saves, will have the operation within a week. In his lone at-bat, Rivera singled off former teammate Andy Pettitte and easily ran to first base. During an at-bat by Willie Randolph, Rivera took a step and fell to the ground in shallow center field behind second base. The Yankees restored the Old-Timers' Day game for the first time since 2019. 'It was a fun day until we heard about Mariano. Mariano hurt his Achilles,' seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens told WFAN broadcaster Suzyn Waldman. 'I don't know what was going on. We all thought it was a hamstring, but I think it's a little worse than that. I think he's at the hospital now. Unbelievable.' Rivera was the second player to get hurt in the event since 2017. Eight years ago, former outfielder and current YES Network analyst Paul O'Neill strained a calf running to first base. Rivera tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in May 2012 while shagging fly balls in batting practice in Kansas City. He returned for his final season in 2013 and finished as baseball's career saves leader with 652 and posted 42 postseason saves. In 2019, the 13-time All-Star became the first player unanimously inducted into the Hall of Fame by getting all 425 votes in balloting conducted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He helped the Yankees win five World Series titles and seven American League pennants. Rivera took part in the Old-Timers' Game, played before the Yankees beat the Houston Astros 5-4, for the second time. He hit an inside-the-park homer in 2019. The event commemorated the 25th anniversary of the 2000 championship team, the last team to win three straight World Series titles. Clemens was a first-time attendee at the event, which had captain Derek Jeter give a short video message when he was introduced following Rivera. Before the event, Rivera said he intended to speak with struggling reliever Devin Williams, who allowed three runs in the 10th inning Friday. He has allowed nine runs in his last five appearances and 28 earned runs this year, two more than 2022-24 combined. 'Can't do nothing about it,' Rivera said Saturday morning. 'Once it's done, it's done. Just learn from it, move on and be confident. You have to be confident in yourself. If you're not confident in yourself, you're playing the wrong sport.'

Rondale Moore injury update: Latest news, timeline on Vikings WR

It may be a very long time until Rondale Moore plays regular-season football again. The new Minnesota Vikings wide receiver had an opportunity for a fresh start with J.J. McCarthy and Kevin O'Connell, but the chance was cut short when he injured his knee in the Vikings-Houston Texans preseason Week 1 matchup on Saturday, Aug. 9. Moore was injured on a punt return, when he was tackled and pulled out of bounds by Texans linebacker Jamal Hill. He immediately grabbed his left knee after the tackle. Unfortunately for Moore, the knee injury came almost a year to the day when he tore his right ACL during training camp with the Atlanta Falcons. Here's what to know about Moore's injury and when we may see him again: Rondale Moore injury update Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said that Moore has a "pretty significant" left knee injury, and that an MRI on Sunday, Aug. 10 should detail the severity. O'Connell didn't provide an exact diagnosis or nature of the injury. Moore was injured on a punt return, immediately grabbing his left knee after he was tackled. The cart was brought out soon after, taking him back to the locker room. Moore spent the entire 2024 season recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee as a member of the Falcons. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals 49th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. (This story will be updated.)
