He said, 'Stalin went from street-to-street, house-to-house during the election, collecting petitions from people. Now, he has initiated a scheme where people can file petitions. What happened to the petitions he collected? The DMK itself has accepted that it has failed to mitigate people's issues.'
Responding to Stalin's comment that the AIADMK is allying with a 'religious party' (the BJP), Palaniswami questioned Stalin: 'How is the BJP a religious party only when it allies with the AIADMK?' He held up a photograph of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi sitting beside late BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee (former PM) when they were allies.

"The Trinamool Congress (TMC), because of its vested interests, has put the identity of West Bengal at stake. For the sake of vote-bank politics, infiltration is being encouraged here. A complete ecosystem has been created to support infiltrators. This is a threat to both national security and Bengal's security and identity," PM Modi said, accusing the ruling party of "openly challenging constitutional institutions" and "defending illegal immigrants." Amid a growing political row over alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in BJP-ruled states, PM Modi turned the tables on the TMC, declaring, "The real threat to Bengal's dignity and future comes not from outside but from within, from a state government that thrives on lies, lawlessness, and loot." "For the BJP, Bengali 'asmita' is supreme. Wherever there is a BJP government, Bengalis are respected, Bengali language is respected," the Prime Minister said. "We will not allow this conspiracy against Bengali 'asmita' to succeed. The BJP is the only party that truly respects it," he said. Lashing out at the Mamata Banerjee-led government, PM Modi said the TMC's appeasement politics has "crossed all limits." "They are now on the streets to protect infiltrators. TMC's corruption and appeasement are pushing the youth out of Bengal," he added. PM Modi also accused the TMC, Left and Congress of neglecting Bengali pride for decades. "For years, the TMC and Left ran the government in Delhi with Congress but never considered recognising Bangla, whereas it was the BJP government that granted it classical language status," he asserted. The Prime Minister positioned the BJP as the harbinger of a new Bengal, promising a clean break from the past. "The BJP has big dreams for West Bengal. We want to build a prosperous, developed Bengal. All the projects being launched here are a step towards that dream," he said. Highlighting the state's reversal in fortunes, the Prime Minister recalled a time when Bengal attracted job-seekers from across the country. "People used to come here from across India for employment. But today, the youth of Bengal are forced to migrate even for small jobs. This is the result of TMC's misrule," he said. 'Gunda Tax' In a stinging critique of Bengal's economic environment under the TMC, PM Modi said the state has become inhospitable for industry and investors. "TMC's 'Gunda Tax' is deterring investment in Bengal. The state's resources have fallen into the hands of the mafia, and government policies are deliberately designed to enable ministers to engage in blatant corruption," he said. "Over the past decades, the situation in this region has become increasingly unfavourable for investment and employment. Frequent incidents of violence, biased policing, and a lack of faith in the justice system create an environment where no one feels confident about investing. Where riots like Murshidabad take place and police act in a biased manner, why will investors come here? Where violence breaks out at the slightest incident, why will anyone invest?" he asked. On the teacher recruitment scam that has left nearly 26,000 teachers and non-teaching staff jobless in the state, the PM pulled no punches. "Whether it's primary or higher education, the TMC government has handed Bengal's education system to crime and corruption. Thousands of qualified teachers are unemployed, and the future of lakhs of children is in darkness due to a shortage of teachers. This is not a coincidence, but the outcome of TMC's corrupt system," he said.

Union Ministers Hold Strategy Meet Ahead Of Parliament Monsoon Session
New Delhi: Several Union ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J P Nadda and Kiren Rijiju, held a strategy session at the defence minister's residence here on Thursday ahead of Parliament's Monsoon Session beginning from July 21. With the customary all-party meeting being held on Sunday, the Group of Ministers are believed to have strategised over the government's stand over a host of matters amid the opposition raising heat on issues, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. There was no official comment on the agenda of the meeting, but sources said it was related to the session. Besides Defence Minister Singh, Home Minister Shah, Health Minister Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rijiju, their ministerial colleagues Piyush Goyal and G Kishan Reddy were among those who were part of the strategy session. The opposition has been pushing for debate in Parliament on issues like SIR and Operation Sindoor. Leading opposition parties such as the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress have alleged that SIR, which is likely to be rolled out in other states, is aimed at benefiting the BJP. They have also seized on US President Donald Trump's claim of mediating the "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan to attack the Modi government. The government has rejected Trump's claim, but the opposition has been insisting on a debate and has even demanded a special session of Parliament over the issue. The government has termed Operation Sindoor a big success, which inflicted massive damage on terror sites and military facilities in Pakistan. The BJP and its Bihar allies have backed the SIR in the poll-bound state, asserting that it is aimed at ensuring that only eligible people are allowed to vote in the assembly polls. Mr Singh usually chairs the all-party meeting. The Parliament session is scheduled to end on August 21. Mr Singh later held a separate meeting with top defence brass amid indications that he may make a statement on Operation Sindoor in Parliament.

Maharashtra Council extends deadline for Privileges Committee report on Kunal Kamra, Sushma Andhare
The Maharashtra Legislative Council on Friday (July 18, 2025) approved a motion granting the Privileges Committee additional time — until the end of the State legislature's next session — to submit its report on stand-up comedian and satirist Kunal Kamra and Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare over remarks allegedly targeting Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The motion was moved by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC Prasad Lad, who also chairs the Privileges Committee. The case arises from a breach of privilege notice moved by BJP MLC Pravin Darekar during the Budget session, in which Mr. Kamra was accused of insulting Mr. Shinde during a parody performance. The act allegedly used the word 'gaddar' or 'traitor in reference to Mr. Shinde's 2022 defection from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and was deemed offensive by the complainant. Ms. Andhare had allegedly expressed support for the performance, which was construed as contempt of the legislature. The show in question was performed and recorded at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai's Khar area and was later uploaded online on March 23, under the title Naya Bharat (New India). Following the release of the video, members of the Shiv Sena, including party functionary Rahul Kanal and eleven others, allegedly vandalised the venue in protest. Subsequently, show-cause notices were issued to both Mr. Kamra and Ms. Andhare by the Legislative Council Secretariat. However, the notices could not be delivered due to incomplete address details. Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde had referred the breach notice to the Privileges Committee in June for further inquiry. On March 24, an FIR was lodged against Mr. Kamra at Khar police station under Sections 353(1)(B), 353(2) and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, accusing him of defaming the Deputy Chief Minister. Mr. Kamra later approached the Madras High Court, stating that he had been residing in Tamil Nadu since 2021. In his petition, he submitted that he had received over 500 death threat calls and messages since the video was uploaded and expressed fear of arrest by Mumbai Police. The High Court extended his interim anticipatory bail till April 17. Mr. Kamra, however, has not responded to two summonses issued by the Mumbai Police. 'Once the show-cause notice is issued, the respondent is asked to give a written reply within 15 days. Failure to do so leads to a second show-cause notice, and in case the respondent does not respond to three notices, the committee can ask the police to arrest them,' he said. 'Thereafter, their statement is recorded in front of the committee. The respondent can choose to apologise, or be represented by a lawyer if we give them permission, or put forth their side by themselves. Whatever decision the committee takes thereafter, it is the final decision. Even the courts have no jurisdiction in the matter,' Mr. Lad added.
