Judge was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts as the designated hitter after being activated from the 10-day injured list. The All-Star slugger has a tendon strain in his right elbow, and the Yankees plan to start a throwing program Wednesday to see how soon Judge can return to the outfield.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Wilyer Abreu made former teammate Nick Pivetta pay for his mistakes with a two-run home run in a four-run fourth inning and Masataka Yoshida also connected to help the Boston Red Sox beat the San Diego Padres 10-2 on Friday night. Connor Wong added a bases-loaded double and Walker Buehler (7-6) shut out the Padres on four singles through six innings as the Red Sox won for the 10th time in 12 games. Buehler struck out four and walked two, with only two Padres reaching scoring position. Buehler improved to 7-1 against the Padres and 2-1 at Petco Park. His previous 12 starts against San Diego all came while with the NL West-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Buehler, who earned the save in the Dodgers' World Series-ending Game 5 victory over the Yankees, signed with the Red Sox as a free agent Dec. 28. Pivetta (11-4) loaded the bases opening the fourth by allowing a single to Alex Bregman and walking Jarren Duran and Trevor Story. Yoshida hit a sacrifice fly and Pivetta's errant throw trying to pick off Story brought in another run. With two outs, Abreu hit a 423-foot homer to right-center, his 21st, to make it 4-0. Bregman hit a sac fly in the fifth. Pivetta allowed five runs and five hits in six innings, struck out three and walked three. Wong's three-run double off Sean Reynolds made it 8-0 in the eighth. The Padres scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Yoshida hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Reynolds, his second. Key moment Abreu's homer to one of the deepest parts of Petco Park. Smith leads Lynx past Mystics for 16th home win
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alanna Smith scored 25 points, Courtney Williams had 14 and the Minnesota Lynx held off the Washington Mystics 80-76 on Friday night to improve to 16-1 at home this season. Smith and Washington rookie Sonia Citron each scored eight straight points for their teams down the stretch. Citron's three-point play with 2:44 left pulled the Mystics within 71-70, but Smith answered at the other end with her fourth 3-pointer. Citron sank a 3-pointer from the wing with 59 seconds remaining to tie it at 76-all. Williams answered with a baseline jumper to give Minnesota a two-point lead. Washington guard Sug Sutton was fouled with 36 seconds left but the call was overturned following a review. The Mystics won the jump ball, but Citron turned it over in the lane. Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer turn back the clock in rematch from fabled rookie clash
Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer were selected four picks apart in the 2006 MLB Draft, have both won three Cy Young Awards and are still adding to their Hall of Fame résumés, with their latest chapters coming in the same game on Friday. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays veterans started against each other for the fifth time of their 19-year professional careers. As many have noted recently, their first clash came on Sept. 7, 2008, when they were both late additions after two other future Hall of Famers — Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux — were both scratched. It was the first time in MLB history two pitchers started against each other as rookies and went on to accumulate at least 3,000 strikeouts each, per Sarah Langs. On Friday, it was Kershaw who got the better of Scherzer in a battle of first-place teams. Both pitchers threw six innings each, but Kershaw allowed one run fewer in a 5-1 Dodgers win. The decisive hit came in the fifth inning off Scherzer, from another Hall of Famer in Mookie Betts. The former MVP broke his recent slump with a two-run homer, his first long ball since July 7. Kershaw getting the win ties him with his former Dodgers teammate at 218 career wins. The start also saw him strike out Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which is notable because Kershaw faced Guerrero's father Vladimir Sr. when he was 21 years old. Scherzer and Kershaw are the 19th and 20th pitchers to reach 3,000 strikeouts in their career, with Kershaw reaching the milestone earlier this season. Per Friday was only the fourth time in MLB history that two pitchers with 3,000 punch-outs already on their ledger faced each other. Scherzer holds a 4.21 ERA this season, on pace for his worst mark since 2011 when he was still figuring things out with the Detroit Tigers. Kershaw has remained effective when healthy with a 3.14 ERA, but it's also been six years since he pitched 140 innings in a season. When they're facing each other, it doesn't really matter. Fans in attendance will be able to say they saw a game between Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer, and it's that kind of memory on which baseball is built. It's why fans were eagerly awaiting that Johnson-Maddux matchup 17 years ago, then got something even more interesting.
