Fuming Tuchel rounds on 'frozen' England stars as Kane points finger of blame
England crashed to a humiliating defeat to Senegal on Tuesday night, with Thomas Tuchel's reign threatening to unravel just four games in as his side were booed off
Thomas Tuchel said his players were 'frozen' as his England team were humiliated by Senegal in Nottingham. England were booed off by supporters inside the City Ground after Tuchel suffered his first defeat as Three Lions boss.
'Felt a bit frozen, not active enough for a long time over the match,' declared Tuchel. 'We go into a long break with a bad feeling. It's a disappointing result. I'm not sure if we did not deserve a little bit more result-wise.'
Harry Kane had pounced for his 73rd international goal to give England an early lead but Ismaila Sarr equalised just before half-time. Habib Diarra fired Senegal ahead just after the hour mark.
And home misery was complete when substitute Cheikh Sabaly added a third in added time. Tuchel added: 'We conceded two very cheap goals and then had big chances to equalise.
"We didn't … so the result is the result. It is tough learning at the moment because we hate to lose.'
Harry Kane said there were 'no excuses' for the defeat - England's first-ever at the hands of an African nation - but proceeded to blast Stephanie Frappart's decision to rule out a Jude Bellingham strike that would have made it 2-2 late in the game.
Frappart was sent to the screen by VAR and gave handball against Levi Colwill in the build-up to Bellingham's hit. Kane declared: 'If you know the rules it's not handball. That gets us back in the game and maybe we can go on and win the game, so it's a big moment.'
The England skipper did, though, suggest his side had not shown enough fight, saying: 'We had moments but, with and without the ball, things aren't clicking, we're not finding the right tempo. We've lost that aggressive nature that we had. Not good enough.
'It's a mixture of things but no excuses. We need to find it quick, the World Cup is going to come around really fast so every camp is really important right now. We're not going to panic but we know we need to be better.'
And Tuchel, who defended his decision to only bring on Ivan Toney three minutes from the end of normal time, also said he would be staying calm, adding: 'We lost a test (friendly) match so there is no need to panic.
'We have three qualification games, we have nine points, and have not conceded. We will be competitive in September. We will go for two more victories, 100 per cent we will.
'We know more now, we are smarter. It's tough at the moment. I am the first one to dislike and hate losses like nothing else. But we don't go next week to the World Cup, we go in one year.'

Gordon aiming to end career on high with Hearts and Scotland at World Cup
Craig Gordon is aiming to end his illustrious career on a high by having a good season with Hearts and helping Scotland to the World Cup. The veteran goalkeeper, who will turn 43 in December, has signed on for another year at Tynecastle in a bid to help his boyhood club improve on a disappointing campaign. He also has his sights set on a swansong in North America where the World Cup will be held next summer and believes the current squad have enough to reach the biggest stage of all. The national team haven't qualified for the tournament since 1998, and Gordon believes it would mark the perfect end to a storied career. Hearts will take on newly promoted English Premier League side Sunderland to mark his testimonial year on July 26. Speaking about his decision to keep playing for another year, he said: 'As last season wore on, towards the end, when things started to calm down a bit and we were down to one game a week, the workload was still manageable. 'For most of the first part of the season, I thought that would be my last season, but as the season progressed I still felt good and decided I still had another year left in me. 'So, it was a good decision, I think. I am excited again to get back to pre-season and ready to go again. 'It wasn't a great season for anybody at the club, so there was always that in the background, but personally for me I didn't think it was too bad, I had some good moments throughout the season and I think not having that good last moment, to be able to go out on a high, I am still really motivated to get out there and do as best as I can and be the best goalkeeper I can be. 'So there was that, and with Scotland as well the World Cup is going to be decided over the next six games within four or five months of the season starting, so it's not that far away. 'That was all the reasons I needed to keep going and keep giving it my very best.' Gordon first signed for the Jambos in 1999 and made his professional debut while out on loan at Cowdenbeath as a teenager in 2001. In a career that has spanned 24 years, he has also played for Sunderland and Celtic, winning three Scottish Cups, five Premiership titles and five League Cups while helping the Hoops to a historic quadruple treble between 2017 and 2020. He has also earned 81 Scotland caps and insists he is motivated as ever for further success domestically and at international level. He said: 'I am motivated on both fronts. There have been a lot of changes at Hearts, and there's a new management team coming in. Also, we have six games with Scotland, and I believe in that squad. 'I think we can beat anybody on any given day, so we have got great ability there and the chance to get ourselves to a World Cup. 'It will be difficult, there are other good teams in the group, but I still think we have that opportunity and it's an exciting time at Hearts with the new manager and a host of new players. 'So there is a lot to be positive about on both fronts.' SFA chief delivers update on Steve Clarke's Scotland future
Read more: Maxwell was recently asked by Sky Sports if he expects the upcoming qualification campaign for the World Cup to be Clarke's last as head coach. "Steve is absolutely desperate to get us to a World Cup," he said. "We've got a squad that, when fully fit and firing, is very much capable of getting us to a World Cup. "It's the final piece in the jigsaw for Steve and the players." Clarke previously admitted that there is a '75 per cent' chance he won't renew his deal following the next World Cup. Maxwell was quizzed on whether the SFA will offer the boss an extension: "That's a conversation for the time," he answered. "We've been very clear throughout this that we'll have those discussions when the time is right. "There's always an element of that [planning ahead for a new head coach] if I'm doing my job properly. "There's always an eye on who's available because managers come and go for a variety of different reasons. "There's always an eye on who's available, but the focus at the moment is on Steve and the team and making sure they get to USA, Mexico and Canada next year." Scotland kick off their World Cup qualification campaign against Denmark in Copenhagen this September.

Thierry Henry's dream striker for Arsenal distances himself from transfer links
Julian Alvarez appears to have distanced himself from rumours he could be set quit Atletico Madrid this summer, labelling the club 'one of the best in the world'. The 25-year-old forward enjoyed an outstanding debut season in La Liga having joined Atleti from Manchester City, racking up 17 goals and four assists in the Spanish top flight. There had been some questions over the £80m fee that Atleti decided to part with to land Alvarez, but the Argentina international has more than lived up to expectations filling the void left by Alvaro Morata. However, speculation has been swirling that Alvarez could be on his way out of the Metropolitano Stadium after just 12 months, with Arsenal and Liverpool both credited with a strong interest in recent weeks. The Gunners have reportedly identified Alvarez as a potential 'Plan C' should they fail in pursuit of their two top targets, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, in the transfer market. But Alvarez and his family are believed to be settled in the Spanish capital and it seems the 2022 World Cup winner is not even thinking about upping sticks ahead of Atleti's Club World Cup campaign. After naming Atleti as one the 'best teams in the world' set to compete this summer's 32-team tournament, Alvarez told DAZN: 'I'm very excited about it. 'Being there, representing the league with this club, will be great, especially considering how happy the club's fans are to take part in this competition. 'There will be teams from all over the world with different cultures and different playing styles because there are teams from various continents. 'It will bring together 32 teams for a great tournament.' Alvarez is relishing the chance to represent Atleti on the global stage, with a shot at silverware at stake. He added: 'The goal is to compete and win. We know it will be a tough tournament, but we will prepare as well as possible and try to go as far as we can. 'We are aware that this club has fans all over the world and they always send us their best wishes and support via social media. 'I'm sure there will be Atletico Madrid fans in the United States and it's a great opportunity for them to cheer us on.' Earlier this week, Atleti head coach Diego Simeone suggested it was only 'logical' that the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool were interesting in signing an 'extraordinary player' like Alvarez. 'It's logical, I can't imagine any other scenario,' Simeone told Argentine outlet La Nacion. 'Julian is 25-years-old, he's an extraordinary player, with hunger, with enthusiasm, with humility, with work, with goals, with status. 'How could everyone not want him? And Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… the best have to want him. 'And for us, Atletico fans, it should be a source of pride that everyone wants him. 'Why? Because he's ours. And since he's ours, we have to take care of him. We have to help him feel happy. 'How will he feel happy? By winning. And to get there, we all have to give 110 per cent. And not just for him, of course, but for everyone.' On a recent episode of The Overlap, Thierry Henry fuelled rumours linking Arsenal with Alvarez, picking out the former City attacker as one of his 'favourite nines' on the planet. Asked which striker could help steer Mikel Arteta's side to the Premier League title, the legendary ex-Arsenal forward replied: 'One of my favourite nines out there at the minute is Julian Alvarez. 'We've been talking about it: putting pressure on, playing it long, low, whatever you want to do. 'You see the free-kick he scored the other day? He can hold the ball alone. 'He played at the Olympic Games, he played the Copa America and I don't hear him saying he's tired. 'The way he plays it, I just like him. But it is possible [that Arsenal can sign him]? I don't know.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
