Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes hasn't played up to his usual standards over the last couple of seasons, but despite that, he's won a Super Bowl and been to another.

Some have said that Mahomes, at just 29 years old, has already peaked, while others think the Chiefs' dynasty is going to come to an abrupt end in 2025.
Now, we aren't there yet, taking a until we see it approach it will be as you were for the Chiefs, and when it comes to the "down" play of Patrick, which we know is true, an NFL coordinator gave the league a warning when it came to Mahomes in Jeremy Fowler's quarterback rankings piece for ESPN.
"OL in decline, particularly at tackle, WR group completely cleaned out by injury, [Travis] Kelce not near the same player," the coordinator said via ESPN. "I thought he had more command of time/score/situation and better fundamentals from within the pocket than ever. He's a one-man army. And no NFL coach wants to deal with him. Complete dawg. No one like him. Maybe [Joe] Burrow, but Burrow isn't as dangerous as a player."

So despite Patrick's stats not being as eye catching as Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen, the "fear" that Mahomes instils into defenses is alive and well.

Plus, for all the reasons that the coordinator laid out, could we expect a bounce-back from the Chiefs this season? There's every reason to suggest so, and it seems that Mahomes has gotten better at different parts of his game as he enters Year 9.
While some doubt Mahomes and the Chiefs in 2025, the anonymous coordinator still believes that Patrick is the gold standard when it comes to how defenses have to try multiple things to stop him.
And now with a fully healthy supporting cast, the 2025 Chiefs might just be ready to make their doubters eat a slice of humble pie.

Yankees go with opener, plan backfires in 7-3 loss to Braves

The Yankees opened the second half of the season with an opener and it didn't work out in their 7-3 loss to the Braves in Atlanta on Friday night. Here are the takeaways... -With Max Fried and Cam Schlittler dealing with injuries, the Yankees went with Ian Hamilton as an opener and it was tough sledding for the reliever and the rest of the bullpen. The Braves picked up three straight hits (two doubles, one single) to go up 2-0. Hamilton would allow a sacrifice fly before the first inning ended. The Braves put up three runs on three hits and one walk to give themselves the early lead. Atlanta would add on in the third inning with an Ozzie Albies three-run shot off of former Mets reliever Rico Garcia. The Yankees used four relievers to get through the game. Here's how it broke down: Hamilton: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K Garcia: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K Scott Effross: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K JT Brubaker: 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K -On the other side, Spencer Strider dominated the Yankees. After allowing a Trent Grisham single to lead off the game, Strider settled in, striking out four straight batters at one point. The Yankees would make Strider work in the third inning, working back-to-back one-out walks for Cody Bellinger. The Yankees outfielder hit a long fly ball to right field and Ronald Acuña Jr. gunned down Jorbit Vivas at third base for the double play. Vivas didn't slide into third base and was tagged out with Aaron Judge on the on-deck circle. Despite walking three batters, Strider kept the Yankees off balance. He struck out eight batters and scattered three hits across six scoreless innings. -The Yankees wouldn't actually score until the seventh inning against the Braves bullpen. Ben Rice hit a one-out double before Austin Wells singled. Giancarlo Stanton then ripped a pinch-hit double to drive in two before Bellinger singled to cut Atlanta's lead to 7-3. Judge struck out to end the inning and strand two runners. The Yankees mustered eight hits but were 3-for-8 with RISP and left seven runners on base. Rice had the best offensive day for the Yankees, going 2-for-4 with two doubles. The worst game came from Jasson Dominguez, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Judge went 1-for-4 but also struck out three times. Game MVP: Spencer Strider Strider's six scoreless innings held down the Yankees long enough for the Braves batters to build a big enough lead. What's next The Yankees and Braves continue their three-game set on Saturday evening. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. Will Warren (6-5, 4.63 ERA) will take the mound while the Braves will send Joey Wentz (2-1, 6.32 ERA) to the bump.

How do 2025 Summer League playoffs work? Explaining the 4-team tournament format

After another blowout win, the Oklahoma City Thunder are in the driver's seat to advance to the 2025 Summer League playoffs. The 10-day summer event has the entire NBA world centered in Las Vegas. The recent draft class and young players headline the extravaganza. Every team plays four games to determine the standings. The Thunder finished with a perfect 4-0 record with mostly lopsided victories, just like what the NBA champion experienced this past season. Nikola Topic and Ajay Mitchell were the top players of this year's roster. As the Thunder have a real shot to make the Summer League playoffs, let's break down what needs to happen ot see if they can become the first franchise to win the NBA championship and then the Summer League championship a month later: Summer League playoff format The top four teams advance to a knockout tournament. That means the semifinals and finals are single elimination. The other 26 teams will play a fifth game. Because only four games are played, that leaves a lot of room for tiebreakers to be needed. The first is point differential. Important to note that it is decided by the average margin of victory, not by the total number of points. There are eight teams in contention to clinch one of the four spots. The Thunder, Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves are all 4-0. Meanwhile, the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks, LA Clippers and Charlotte Hornets are 3-0. The latter five will play one last game before the playoff picture is set. Important games Only one day remains in the current Summer League schedule. Here are the games the Thunder must keep an eye on if they want to clinch a playoff spot: Hawks vs. Grizzlies, 5 p.m. CT (NBA TV) Spurs vs. Hornets, 6 p.m. CT (ESPN) Warriors vs. Raptors, 9 p.m. CT (NBA TV) Nuggets vs. Clippers, 10 p.m. CT (ESPN2) Tiebreakers Because three teams have already played their four games and won them, their tiebreaker is set up. They now await the results of the above games to figure out if it's large enough to clinch a playoff spot, if needed. Here are their point differentials: Thunder (4-0) — plus-14.8 Kings (4-0) — plus-11.5 Timberwolves (4-0) — plus-9.0 When will the Summer League playoffs start? The Summer League playoffs will take place from July 19-20. The semifinals will be played on July 19 and the championship game will be played on July 20. That means two teams will play an additional sixth game to their Summer League slate to determine the champion. What do the Summer League champions win? The Summer League champions will be rewarded with rings. It's a recent tradition that started in 2022. It's a cool prize to win, especially if you're a bubble NBA player who likely won't have a long career in the league and could bounce around overseas or in the G League.
