
From plate to gut: The silent threat of microplastics
This World Environment Day, the theme 'End Plastic Pollution' highlights a pressing issue: microplastics in our food. These tiny plastic particles, less than 5mm in size, have infiltrated our diets, posing significant health risks.
Microplastics are minute plastic particles resulting from the breakdown of larger plastics. Due to their durability, they persist in the environment and have been found in various foods. Dr. Sharad Malhotra, Senior Consultant & Director of Gastroenterology at Aakash Healthcare, says, 'Microplastics are minute plastic particles formed by the decomposition of plastics, which are widespread in nature and hence damage both wildlife and people. They have been found in a variety of foods and can also be inhaled.'
Microplastics enter the food chain through various pathways:
Seafood: Marine animals ingest plastic debris, which then enters the human diet.
Salt: Sea salt, in particular, is contaminated due to ocean pollution.
Drinking Water: Both bottled and tap water contain microplastics.
Honey and Sugar: Studies have detected plastic particles in these sweeteners.
Fruits and Vegetables: Crops irrigated with contaminated water accumulate microplastics.
Plastic Packaging: Leaching from containers during storage or heating contributes to contamination.
Dr. Bir Singh Sehrawat, Program Clinical Director & HOD of Gastroenterology at Marengo Asia Hospitals Faridabad, explains, 'Microplastics consumed through food, water, or air may build up in the body, particularly within the gastrointestinal tract, raising the risk of certain health issues like gut inflammation, dysbiosis (imbalance in gut microbiota), and potentially increased risk of conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBS) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBD). Microplastics may also give rise to systemic inflammation, leading to other chronic conditions.'
The ingestion of microplastics has been linked to various health issues:
Hormone Disruption: Chemicals like BPA and phthalates, associated with plastics, can interfere with hormone production.
Immune System Dysfunction: Microplastics can cause oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to immune system dysfunction.
DNA Damage: Long-term exposure may lead to genetic mutations and increased cancer risk.
Dr. Mandeep Singh Malhotra, Senior Oncologist at Art of Healing Cancer, warns, 'They can also cause DNA damage leading to cancers. They can interfere in our endocrine systems, that is production of hormones. Our immune system also comes under excessive oxidative stress and inflammation, which causes it to dysfunction.'
Some finds to microplastics are worrying. 'In one study, scientists found microplastics in human blood for the first time. In another, they found plastic particles in the placenta of unborn babies. People who eat a lot of seafood or work in plastic-related industries may be at higher risk. In extreme cases, long-term exposure has been linked to problems like breathing issues, hormone imbalance, and even organ damage,' says Samiksha Kalra, Dietician, Madhukar Rainbow Children Hospital.
To mitigate exposure to microplastics:
Opt for Fresh Foods: Choose fresh produce over packaged items.
Use Alternative Containers: Replace plastic containers with glass or stainless steel.
Avoid Heating Food in Plastic: Do not microwave food in plastic containers.
Choose Personal Care Products Wisely: Avoid products containing microbeads.
Dr. Bir Singh advises, 'Opt for fresh food and ditch plastic water bottles, using glass or stainless steel containers instead of plastics. Avoid heating food in plastic containers especially in microwave as the heat can cause the plastic to break down and leach microplastics into your food. Use glass or ceramic instead. Choose personal care products wisely as many face scrubs and toothpaste contain tiny plastic microbeads.'

Is it normal to poop thrice a day?
Consistent bowel movements indicate that your health is in its prime and all's well on the inside. While some people poop multiple times a day, some others poop once in a couple of days. 'It's normal for some people to do this every day, others every other day, and still others once a week. People engage in this behavior at a wide range of frequencies. What's considered normal for one is not so for another,' said Yegurla. 'If you pass three bowel movements a day, then that is alright so long as it is an established routine and all stools are well-formed. However, where all this happens out of the blue with discomfort, pain, or hardened mushy feces, then seeking the intervention of a healthcare professional may be necessary,' he explained. In order to make sure you have healthy bowel movement in place, Dr Yegurla recommended these 5 lifestyle tweaks: 'Ingest a diet with lots of fiber that includes fruit, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains,' said Dr Yegurla, adding that people must drink plenty of water during the day so that stools can be soft and make the process of passing them easier. 'One of the options is to think about the consumption of probiotics, chief examples of which are found in yogurt, sauerkraut, and kefir to name a few,' he added. Consistent physical activity can keep your digestive system working well and increase your likelihood of going to the bathroom regularly. 'Make an effort to go to the bathroom at the same time each day. It will help if you train your body to pass stools consistently,' advised the doctor. He shared that a person's body reacts individually when exposed to various types of food, and adjustments should be made as appropriate, as some foods may also cause constipation or diarrhea. 'If you are under too much stress or anxiety, even your digestive system suffers. It is possible to reduce these symptoms when you learn meditation and find out how to relax through yoga. When you feel you have to poop, go immediately rather than postponing it since delaying may cause constipation,' shared Dr Yegurla. Dr Vikas Jindal, consultant, dept of gastroenterology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi pointed out that if you happen to experience irregular bowel movements despite making these lifestyle changes, it may be indicative of underlying issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hypothyroidism, or a dietary imbalance. 'Seek medical advice if symptoms are accompanied by severe pain, blood in stools, or unexplained weight loss, as these could signal more serious conditions,' he advised. Dr Rahul Dubbaka, Consultant, gastroenterology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, further mentioned that over-the-counter laxatives, bulk-forming agents, and stimulants are popular solutions to this problem nowadays. But while they can help relieve the condition, one should always use them with caution and only under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Wellness and longevity startup Biopeak raises $3 million from Ranjan Pai's Claypond Capital, Accel's Prashanth Prakash, others
Live Events Wellness startup Biopeak has raised $3 million in seed funding from Claypond Capital—the family office of Manipal Group chairman Ranjan Pai—Accel's Prashanth Prakash, and Zerodha's Bengaluru-based startup has launched its first longevity clinic and plans to expand to other metro cities in the coming year. Biopeak offers a personalised preventive healthcare service, combining diagnostics, AI, and concierge-style care to predict health risks and craft tailored intervention plans.'We offer solutions that are predictive, not reactive,' cofounder and CEO Rishi Pardal told ET. The service includes lab tests, imaging such as MRIs and CT scans, and non-invasive diagnostics to assess organ system health and recommend long-term regimens. 'The funding will go towards building our scientific capabilities, expanding the AI platform, and scaling operations,' Pardal at athletes, health-conscious individuals, and people with unresolved chronic issues like IBS, Biopeak's approach integrates traditional diagnostics with AI insights. The startup has partnered with IISc and Longevity India—a scientific forum backed by Prakash—to tailor interventions for South Asian genetics.'There are breakthroughs in cellular tech and AI-led diagnostics, but they're not widely accessible,' said Prakash.
