TAWAU: A gold mining company here has been ordered to cease operations at its water retention pond containing sodium cyanide chemical waste, effective Tuesday. It was learnt that the directive was issued by the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia during a joint inspection and investigation conducted by various government departments and agencies at the gold mine on Tuesday. The inspection team included representatives from the Fire and Rescue Department, State Department of Environment, State Health Department and State Forestry Department. It follows an incident where the retention pond's embankment collapsed and overflowed, causing contaminated water to flow into Sg Kalumpang. It is understood that company operating at Bukit Mantri was also directed to construct a new water retention pond that meets established standards immediately. According to sources, the ban will remain in effect until the company can provide proper new water retention facilities for mining activities.
Advertisement The prohibition specifically applies to mining operations related to the water retention pond, while gold excavation work in the field remains permitted. The Department of Environment is expected to collect water samples on Wednesday from areas around the gold mine and locations affected by the spillage, including Sungai Kalumpang. In related developments, the Fire and Rescue Department, which takes the incident seriously, hopes the parties involved can resolve their issues. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor has hailed the RM31 billion three-phase project by Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd as a major milestone for the state's economic development. Speaking at the launch of the project's Phase 1 at the Sabah International Convention Centre yesterday, Hajiji thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore-based Green Esteel Group for backing Sabah's industrial ambitions. 'This project is not merely a financial commitment. It is a vote of your confidence in our vision and in our capacity to foster growth and development,' he said in his speech. Hajiji added that the steel manufacturing plant, located in the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip), is expected to create a wide range of 'ripple effects' in sectors such as green technology and local entrepreneurship. He said job creation must benefit Sabahans first and urged industry players to prioritise the training and upskilling of the local workforce. Developing sustainable and inclusive geoparks

Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia is actively implementing the National Geopark Development Plan 2021–2030 (PPGN) as a key strategy to develop sustainable and inclusive geoparks across the country, said Minerals and Geoscience Department Deputy Director Jenneth Liliana Cyril. She said the implementation of PPGN plays a crucial role in ensuring geoparks in Malaysia serve not only as protected geological areas but also as catalysts for economic development, environmental education and local community wellbeing. 'Malaysia has made notable progress in geopark development, beginning with Langkawi's recognition as a Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) in 2007, followed by Kinabalu Geopark being recognised as the country's second UGGp in 2023,' she said at the Malaysian Geopark Network Conference here. She noted that several other areas, including Jerai, Lembah Kinta, Labuan, Lenggong, Sarawak Delta, Stong, Gombak-Hulu Langat, Kenyir, Perlis and Lipis have been designated as National Geoparks. Moving forward to 2030, key targets include elevating Lenggong, Sarawak Delta and Gombak-Hulu Langat to UGGp status and recognising Melaka and Jelebu as new National Geoparks. 'The implementation of the National Geopark Development Plan is supported by the State Geopark Local Plan (PLGN), which will be adopted by state and local authorities once an area has received national geopark recognition. 5,000 youth entrepreneurs to benefit

NABAWAN: The Chief Minister's Outreach Programme with non-governmental organisation (NGO) and young entrepreneurs is expected to benefit some 5,000 youth entrepreneurs by the end of June. Chief Minister's Department's Government and People Cooperation Institute (Ikrar) Director Azrul Ibrahim said since its launch in 2022, some 4,100 young entrepreneurs had received RM500 each in start-up capital to help kick-start or expand their small businesses. He said the programme was inspired by the Chief Minister's vision to ensure that the majority of young entrepreneurs operating small-scale businesses in rural and suburban areas receive support and assistance from the State Government. 'As of now 4,100 entrepreneurs, including in Nabawan, have received the aid, and we are targeting 5,000 recipients by the end of June,' he said when met during the Chief Minister's Outreach Programme with NGOs and Young Entrepreneurs at the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) on Monday. Also present were Nabawan Community Development Leader Deckson Andipai, Gagasan Rakyat Nabawan Youth Chief Ag Azuan Pg Hamzah and local community leaders.
