Coolie Box Office Collection Day 5: Rajinikanth movie finally hits ₹200 crore mark amid Monday blues
Coolie Box Office Collection Day 5: Rajinikanth's Coolie has finally hit the ₹ 200 crore milestone amid a sharp decline in its earnings on Monday. The movie, released on August 14 to mark the superstar's 50th year in the industry, enjoyed a long weekend at the Indian box office. After a record-breaking opening day collection and hitting the ₹ 150 crore milestone in three days, the movie has hit a slowdown, earning a total of ₹ 194.25 crore till Sunday. The Rajinikanth movie is facing fierce competition from Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2. According to early estimates of industry tracker Sacnilk, Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, earned just ₹ 5.6 crore on Monday until 6:30 PM. This figure is significantly lower than what the movie earned in the previous days. The movie's earnings have already dropped nearly 55% since its opening day, and its collection on its first Monday is likely to widen the gap significantly. With this, Coolie's 4-day total stands at ₹ 200.1 crore. The total earnings will be revised later in the evening, once the figures for the evening and night show are declared. The movie has been released in five languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada, boosting a pan-India appeal. Coolie, the biggest Indian opener of 2025 at the worldwide box office, earned a gross of ₹ 385 crore globally on Day 4. Of this, the movie minted ₹ 154.5 crore overseas, while its India gross was ₹ 230.5 crore. Sacnilk said Coolie became the first Tamil movie to cross the Rs150 crore worldwide mark on its opening day, cementing its place in cinematic history. Coolie's Day 5 global earnings will be published tomorrow, Tuesday. Coolie and War 2 were released on the same day, 14 August, during Independence Day week. Coolie surpassed War 2's Day 5 earnings, with Hrithik's film bringing in ₹ 4.38 crore. Though the margin isn't very large, it still impacts War 2's overall collections, which now stand at ₹ 179.13 crore. Rajinikanth's Coolie stars Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, and Monisha Blessy. Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Pooja Hegde also appear in a cameo.

Madras Week 2025: Chennai Valluvar Kottam, an iconic shooting spot that lends grandeur to Tamil cinema
In the heart of Chennai, the towering stone chariot that houses the ancient Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar's statue in Valluvar Kottam has been a silent witness to countless public gatherings and cultural events and occasionally, to the magic of cinema unfolding beneath its shadow. Just as the iconic landmark has long been a familiar backdrop for political rallies and protest meetings, the monument's sprawling premises — with its giant chariot, massive carved wheels, and mirror-sheen flooring — has set the tone for soft-paced movie song sequences filmed under the night lights. One of the most memorable on-screen moments shot at Valluvar Kottam is the one from the timeless song Mounamana Neram in the Tamil film Salangai Oli, starring Kamal Haasan and Jaya Prada. The sequence opens with the granite wheels and its intricate textures dominating the frame and creating a calm ambience in sync with the song's gentle melody. The glossy flooring, mirroring the actors' silhouettes in a few shots, lends a perfect visual cue in harmony with the song's lyrics and mood. The grandeur of the Valluvar Kottam has been featured in several other Tamil films since 1980s. In yet another popular duet Seer Kondu Vaa from the film Naan Paadum Paadal, featuring actors Sivakumar and Ambika, the majestic granite elephants at the base of the chariot and the pillars along the corridor draped in grey and black hues form the regal backdrop that complements the lead pair's charm. Spread over five acres, Valluvar Kottam was constructed between 1974 and 1976 as a memorial monument for Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar. Its spectacular architecture was designed by architect V. Ganapati Stapathi. It also featured in the comedy scenes from Coimbatore Mappillai, featuring actors Vijay and Goundamani as unemployed characters idling away at a public place. Jayanthi Kannappan of ALS Productions and daughter-in-law of veteran producer A.L. Srinivasan recalled memories of Ponnar Shankar, a Tamil historical drama film starring Prasanth. Many scenes in the film, which was based on the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's novel, were shot in Valluvar Kottam. 'I used to visit the massive set that recreated an ancient town in stunning detail, complete with traditional houses and warriors carrying swords and bows. It used to transport me to a bygone era and some scenes were filmed in the main hall. The set remained for three or four months. Kalaignar often visited the shooting spot,' she said. Recently, the monument received a major facelift at a cost of ₹80 crore.

Madras Day 2025: When Tamil cinema and railways cross tracks in Chennai
There's a track where Tamil cinema and the railways intersect in Madras. Several hit films and iconic scenes, which are etched in the memory of filmgoers, were shot on railway premises. These places provide perfect backdrop to several films, so much so, that they are remembered more for being set in these locations than their actors. A film song dedicated to the train itself featured in Gentleman, where Prabhudeva danced to the hit number Chikku Bukku Chikku Bukku Raile. The way the song, which also introduced music director G.V. Prakash as a child singer, sways in sync with the train's movement endeared both the song and the railway station to audiences. M. Senthamil Selvan, Chief Public Relations Officer of Southern Railway, said revenue from film shooting permission was a good source of non-fare income for the railways. The Public Relations Department is in charge of giving permissions for film shooting, which necessitates several formalities as passengers or train operations should not be affected. Southern Railway earned around ₹60 lakh from the fee collected for film shooting licences during 2024-25, he added. D. Om Prakash, Senior Public Relations Officer, Southern Railway, said some of the favourite films that were shot on railway premises were Alaipayuthey at the Tambaram railway station, Gentleman at the Egmore railway station, and Agni Natchathiram and Singaravelan at the Southern Railway Headquarters, located next to the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station. Many film directors, including Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Myskin, and Fazil, feature trains along with railway stations either as a key setting or backdrop during memorable scenes. A notable example was Thodari, a film entirely set on a running train, not to mention Bharathiraja's classic Kizhekke Pogum Rail, which includes a song sequence on a moving train. Additionally, movies such as Chennai Express and Anbu Karangal have train-related sequences, though they may not be entirely train-based flicks. The Tondiarpet railway yard was featured in Kamal's 2022 hit film 'Vikram'. The Royapuram railway station, from where the first train in south India was operated, is a heritage station and is popular shooting spot in the Tamil film industry. 'Rail' Ravi, a retired officer from the railways, reminisces about the films that were shot on railway premises. Actor Sivaji in Pachai Vilakku stars as a train driver, with the film having been shot at the Basin Bridge railway station. Also, actor Kamal's hit films Anbe Sivam, Kurudhipunal, Vasool Raja MBBS, and actor Rajinikanth's Sivaji had scenes that were shot at the railway headquarters, he said. Interestingly, for the film Madrasapattinam, the producers, instead of renting the Chennai Central railway station, built an entirely new set of the station to bring the feel of the pre-independence era.
