Ashbourne artist who painted a Shrovetide football for King Charles III
"All the nerves we had that day just melted away because he was such a great person to be with."Tim Baker recalls the moment that he presented the future King with the Royal Shrovetide football that he had painstakingly painted.It was 2003, and King Charles III, who was Prince of Wales at the time, was starting the game or "turning the ball up", and like all those who are given this honour, the ball had been carefully painted with images that represented his life.Mr Baker, 52, had been painting balls for the game since 1991 when he was asked by the game's secretary - who was also his milkman - to paint one for the future King.
The Royal Shrovetide Football game in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, is traditionally played on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday and has been held nearly every year since at least 1667.The game sees thousands of players - in teams called the Up'Ards and Down'Ards - compete to move the ball to opposite ends of the town.Normally, Mr Baker said he would meet up for a chat with the person due to "turn the ball up" - but this was not possible with a senior member of the Royal Family - so he submitted drawings that were given the go-ahead."The current King is an accomplished artist, and one thing he asked was how we painted on a sphere," Mr Baker explained.
To begin with, he starts by measuring the ball, which is bigger than a normal football and heavier because it is filled with cork chippings.Buildings are particularly tricky to paint on a round surface, and everything needs to line up because the balls are hung up on display.Royal Shrovetide is played over two days, and Mr Baker always paints the Wednesday ball - and this year it is for the farmer Brian Pegg and features a bull's head and a horse.He said that some of the fine detailing can cause a headache, and each ball involves at least 50 hours of work. Within two hours of play, all this paintwork is gone."It's awful," he added. "People will grab me by the collar or give me a nudge to say 'your paint has come off quick this year'."They'll tell you that, but there is nothing you can do."
Mr Baker said that he was not "player material" and had never played, but he was a fan who loved the history of game.He works at the Historical Centre in Ashbourne, where Royal Shrovetide Football features heavily. One of the repainted balls on display is one that was scored, or "goaled", in 1902, the year King Edward VII was crowned.It is particularly special to Mr Baker because it was goaled by Joseph Burton his great-great-great-uncle.He is much more relaxed about it all compared to when he was first asked to take on this role."I was extremely nervous to start with, because it is such an iconic item in Ashbourne," he added."I was not very old, and I had never done anything like this before. I also knew what I was up against because being a fan of Shrovetide, it was important to get it right."

"But thousands of people were moved by his dedication, humility, and work ethic." Mendoza had just seen her own daughter graduate that same day when she spotted him hard at work in Burger King. "His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognise that," she told local outlet 11 Alive. "I'm just grateful I got to do something for him." The teen was moved to tears at generosity, revealing the financial uncertainty he had felt after finishing high school. He told Mendoza's TikTok followers how much their kindness meant to him in an emotional message. "Thank you so much, I was thinking of taking a gap year because I didn't have money for school, but thank you to all of you now, I might actually go straight to technical college and get my mechanical," he said. James Bond actor Joe Don Baker dies aged 89
Three-time James Bond actor Joe Don Baker has died aged 89, his family have announced. Baker played the franchise's first American villain as smarmy arms trader Brad Whitaker in the 1987 film The Living Daylights with Timothy Dalton as 007. He also played good guy CIA Agent Jack Wade in Pierce Brosnan's first two outings as James Bond in GoldenEye in 1995 and Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997. Aussie rock icons Hoodoo Gurus struck by a third tragedy in less than a month as founding drummer James Baker dies at age 71 following terminal cancer diagnosis
Aussie rock icons Hoodoo Gurus has lost another member. The ARIA Hall of Fame recipients confirmed on Tuesday that their original drummer James Baker has died aged 71. Baker's death came one year after he was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. He joined the legendary rockers in 1981 and performed on their first album, Stoneage Romeos. The Perth-born musician co-wrote the band's very first single Leilani and also performed on their 1983 hit song My Girl. He left the band in 1984 and performed in several other iconic Australian bands throughout his career, including Beasts of Bourbon and The Scientists. Hoodoo Gurus shared a photo of Baker energetically playing the drums on stage to mark his passing. In 2006, in recognition of his long service to the music industry Baker was inducted into the Western Australian Hall of Fame. The musician was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year and was told he only had months to live, reported The West in August. He told the publication that he struggled with not being able to perform musically as his condition worsened. 'I get very tired. I can still play drums but if I had to stand up, I wouldn't be able to. I could probably play three songs, then I have to sit down,' Baker said. He is survived by his wife of ten years, Catherine Podger, and two daughters from a previous relationship. Baker's death came just weeks after the tragic passing of Hoodoo Gurus' original guitarist Kimble Rendall on April 20. 'RIP Kimble. Very sad news,' the band wrote on social media alongside a throwback picture of him playing the guitar in a studio. Rendall's own death was just days after the band's former manager Dominic 'Mick' Mazzone died after battling an illness. The band took to social media in April to remember the industry veteran as a 'dear friend'. 'We in the Hoodoo Gurus are utterly devastated at the sudden loss of our dear friend, Mick (Dominic) Mazzone,' they wrote in a statement. 'It is impossible to convey the shock and grief we are feeling right now. We have already shed many tears, and there will be many more to come. 'Our loss is nothing compared to the one that has been dealt to Mick's close family and friends and, in particular, to his beloved kids, Frank, Antonia and Alex.'
