A 21-year-old Muslim man was on Monday beaten to death allegedly by members of a Hindutva group in the town of Jamner in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district.
The perpetrators allegedly assaulted Suleman Rahim Khan Pathan after he was seen with a Hindu woman from the same village at a cafe, a relative named Abdullah Pathan told Scroll.
The Jamner police filed a case of murder, abduction, rioting, criminal intimidation and breach of peace at 10.45 pm on Monday, five hours after the crime was reported. The first information report names five men – Abhishek Rajput, Ranjeet Matade, Aaditya Devre, Krishna Teli and Sojwal Teli – and also lists 12 unidentified men as accused persons.
Suleman's family said that some of the accused men work as gau rakshaks, or cow vigilantes.
Jalgaon Superintendent of Police Maheshwar Reddy told Maktoob Media that four persons have been arrested, and the police are looking for five others. He said that the killing appeared to be linked to an 'inter-community relationship' but added that the matter was under investigation, and the exact motive behind the crime cannot be stated at this time.
Suleman hailed from the Betawad village in the Jalgaon district. He had recently completed his education and was preparing to apply for police recruitment.
On August 11, Suleman left for Jamner to fill a police recruitment form, Abdullah told Scroll. 'We don't know about the girl he went to meet,' he said. 'He never told us about her.'
Suleman and the woman met at the Brand Cafe in Jamner. The cafe's owner identified Suleman as a Muslim and the woman as a Hindu, and called several young boys from the neighbourhood, Abdullah said.
'They took him to Sonbardi temple near Jamner and brutally assaulted him,' Abdullah said.
From the temple, Suleman was driven to a nearby village and assaulted again. He was then driven to the bus stand in Betawad where the mob publicly thrashed him once again.
His father Rahim Khan Pathan told Scroll that he, his wife Tabassum, his father and daughter – who had delivered a baby a month ago – all rushed to save Suleman. 'We suffered injuries on our hands and legs,' he said. 'They used iron rods, sticks, and hands to beat us too.'
Rahim said that his son was bleeding from his ear, and had suffered multiple blows on his head. Abdullah said that Suleman's genitals had also been brutalised with a knife. 'There was no part of his body that they spared,' he remarked.
The attackers warned the villagers not to help the family, Abdullah told Scroll. 'They were threatened that they would be beaten up too,' he said. 'After they left, nobody offered us a car to drive Suleman to a hospital.'
The family first took the 21-year-old to a private hospital on a bike. The hospital, however, refused to admit him as it did not have the specialisation needed to treat him. The family then took him to a civil hospital, where he was declared dead at 4.30 pm.
Javed Mullaji, a former corporator in Jalgaon, said that this was an attack on the Muslim community. 'They took him to multiple locations and assaulted him to send a clear message to all of us,' he said.

Too harsh, too vague

Uttarakhand is following in big brother UP's footsteps as its state cabinet approves what can be fairly described as draconian amendments in anti-conversion law via the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill 2025. Aside from harsher punishment (minimum prison sentence of seven years, fine up to ₹10L) and expanding its scope (property seized), the law is even more problematic thanks to loosely worded conditions defining the offence. For instance, inducement/allurement has been expanded to include 'glorifying one religion against another'. It bans 'social media applications aimed at building online communities of people who share interests and activities or are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others…' for the purposes of the law. Whatever does this mean? The law in a 2022 amendment had already imported terms of the most stringent of laws – anti-terror legislation UAPA. So, 'illegal conversion' is a cognisable nonbailable offence, police already need no warrant to arrest, suspicion will suffice, and the burden of proof is on the accused. New amendments increase jail-term to life of 14 years. Similar to UP's law, if convicted of illegal conversion of minors or SC/ST, jail-term may be 20 years or remainder of life. Mass conversion is defined as 'when the religion of two or more persons is converted'. CM Dhami justifies the amendments because allegedly a 'demographic change' is being wrought in the state through 'illegal/forced conversion'. For the record, Uttarakhand population is 83% Hindu, about 14% Muslim, a smattering of Christians and others. The long arm of the law has stretched into what is legislative and executive overreach. The legislation is to be amended to allow local govt to confiscate property belonging to the accused if there is not evidence, but mere suspicion of 'foreign funds' being involved. DMs can order seizure of any property they have 'reason to believe' is related to alleged conversion. And this can be done '…regardless, whether a court has taken cognisance of such offence.' This, when the burden of proof is already on the accused. There is disquiet in the state about harsh measures being exploited by officials for witch-hunts. A law where anyone can be arrested on mere suspicion of 'intent', where the accused's property can be seized, which places the onus of proving the charges wrong on the accused is at the least a poorly designed legislation. It demands a thorough review, or reversal. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email This piece appeared as an editorial opinion in the print edition of The Times of India.

‘You are lying': Crucial witness in Jaipur Exp shootout sticks to testimony, counters the defence

Mumbai: The trial of former Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable Chetan Singh Chaudhary – accused of shooting down his senior officer and three identifiably Muslim passengers on board the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express on the night of July 31, 2023 – was marked by drama on Wednesday and Thursday as Narendra Parmar, a crucial witness, stuck to his testimony despite intense cross examination by defence advocate Jaywant Patil. Former RPF constable Chetan Singh Chaudhary in court (HT Photo) Parmar, then RPF head constable and part of the four-member escort team on the train, had testified earlier that he had seen Singh take with him a bearded, kurta-clad passenger at gunpoint, whose body was later found near the toilet of the pantry car. He had also seen Chaudhary shoot another bearded, kurta-clad passenger in the chest even as the latter begged for mercy, Parmar had told the court during his examination-in-chief. On Wednesday and Thursday, defence advocate Patil went over Parmar's examination-in-chief with a fine toothcomb, asking him questions about every little detail. Patil probed the witness about the exact sequence and timing of events after the train halted at Borivali station, where bodies of the four victims were unloaded and Chaudhary was arrested. About the incident itself, Patil suggested that it was not possible for Parmar to see clearly what was unfolding inside the train compartment through its glass door, especially since the lights inside were switched off, or to hear any conversations as the train's noise would drown them out. He also alleged that the police had told Parmar what to say in his statement recorded under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) before a magistrate. Parmar dismissed the suggestions and stuck to whatever he had said in his examination-in-chief, telling the defence lawyer, 'Your questions are all wrong; you are mixing up things.' The former head constable said that he could see clearly what was going on through the glass door. While the compartment was lit with a night light, the area near the toilet was brightly lit, he said. The noise of the train was overbearing only at some points, he replied. The police had nothing to do with what he had told the magistrate, he said, adding, 'I told the magistrate what I had seen.' Towards the end of the cross-examination, stung by the suggestions of the defence, Parmar repeatedly counter-questioned Patil, saying, 'Kaun bola? (Who says so?)' At one point, Patil replied, 'I say so', to which Parmar retorted, 'Aap jhooth bol rahe ho (You are lying).' That became his standard response thereafter. Parmar, 60, was one-and-a-half years away from retirement when he was dismissed from service for his 'failure to discharge his duty' that night. He had testified earlier that though he had seen Chaudhary ready to shoot his targets, the presence of other passengers between him and Chaudhary, and also behind Chaudhary, had stopped him from using his firearm against the former constable as a preventive measure.

Dharmasthala burials case: It's an international conspiracy, says BJP

Bengaluru: Opposition BJP Thursday claimed the investigation into alleged mass murders in Dharmasthala was part of another attempt to defame and demean Hindu religious institutions and alleged a network of "urban Naxals and foreign nationals" was behind the conspiracy. During a half-hour debate in the assembly on the case, BJP members said vested interests were attempting to hurt Hindu sentiments. However, home minister G Parameshwara insisted the special investigation team (SIT) was formed to get to the truth "and not play politics" and that a detailed reply would be presented Monday. Opposition leader R Ashoka called it "a national conspiracy". "They began with Tirupati with the seven hills, then went on to Shani Shingnapura and reached Sabarimala, where women were encouraged to enter the premises. Now, the toolkit is trying to defame Dharmasthala Manjunatha temple and the trust," Ashoka said. He accused conspirators of using the 2012 Soujanya murder case, in which the accused was released for lack of evidence, as an excuse to defame Dharmasthala temple and its trust. "A single remark of alleged communal disharmony against a certain community results in our Hindu workers being booked and sent to jail. But when it comes to remarks posted on social media hurting Hindu sentiments, not a single case is booked," he said. Ashoka accused the govt of being party to efforts to defame Hindu society and demanded that the administration present an interim report on the special investigation team's (SIT) probe. He also called for disclosure of the man behind the mask who is leading investigators to the alleged mass burial sites. BJP sought a narco-analysis test on the masked man and demanded that the investigation be handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA), alleging the involvement of foreign funding for "small-time accusers" and YouTubers. In response, Parameshwara said: "We have as much faith and belief as you, or even more, in Dharmasthala Manjunatha and the Dharmadhikari Veerendra Hegde's philanthropic and religious efforts. We only want to get to the bottom of the truth." Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said the govt stood firmly with the Dharmasthala temple and its trust, and that the probe was intended to put all allegations permanently to rest.
