KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 (Bernama) -- Behind the warmth of diplomatic pleasantries at the 46th ASEAN Summit lies another, less visible yet equally critical mission. The real heat, however, isn't at the negotiating table -- it's in the kitchen of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
At the helm of this high-stakes culinary operation is KLCC's executive chef, Chef Hisham Jaafar, 52, who has devoted more than 15 years to mastering high-end cuisine within the prestigious venue's kitchens.
This marks the third time Chef Hisham has shouldered the responsibility of preparing meals for a major international event. A decade ago, he catered for a summit graced by dignitaries including former US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
'We were honoured to be entrusted with the 26th ASEAN Summit in 2015, along with other global events like the World Islamic Economic Forum.
'Perhaps that's why the Prime Minister's Office has once again placed its confidence in us," he told Bernama.
But prior experience, he added, is not a free pass. The pressure is no less intense, especially when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sets the tone by insisting that each dish embodies the essence of Malaysia.
Under the summit's culinary theme, 'Malaysian on Plate', Hisham and his team began planning three months in advance. The aim: to serve not only enticing food, but also a menu that reflects the country's rich and multi-ethnic gastronomic heritage—from Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine to the distinct flavours of Sabah and Sarawak.

Negri Sembilan to secure over RM10bil new investments in 2025, says MB Aminudin

SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan is on track to meet its target of securing more than RM10bil in new investments for this year, says Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun ( pic ). The Mentri Besar said the target could be achieved based on investments received in the first half of this year so far. "Based on our performance for the first six months, yes, we can achieve our target. "Although we have our own figures, only the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry can state the exact amount approved so far, as they are the final authority on approving these investments," he told reporters after chairing the state exco meeting at Wisma Negri on Wednesday (Aug 20). In 2024, the state received investments totalling RM7.25bil involving 208 approved projects covering the manufacturing, services and other key sectors. Of this, RM3.4bil or 46.9% was foreign investment, most of which involved high-tech projects. Aminuddin said the outlook for the second half of the year also looked bright with several new investors planning to invest in the state. "We have several new investors coming in, including a semiconductor manufacturer from China setting up operations here. "In fact, the state will be opening another new area for new industries covering a large area in the next few months to house more investors," he said. The new industrial area, he said, will be located in the Malaysian Vision Valley 2.0. To another question, Aminuddin said he has yet to receive any report of existing investors planning to move out of the state due to global economic uncertainties. "I have no information on this, but I am confident that this will not happen following the lower tariff structure announced by the United States on exports. "I believe Malaysia is still an attractive investment destination despite the new tariff structure," he said, adding that the state has continued to receive queries on investment opportunities despite the tariff announcement.

Justice For Zara Qairina Must Be Through Legal Process

CRIME & COURTS PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Justice and accountability in the case involving the late Zara Qairina Mahathir must be fully upheld in accordance with the law, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said truth and justice for the victim cannot be determined through conversations on social media or public opinion. 'Those who organise a series of demonstrations, what are they looking for? To seek the truth. To uphold justice. So how? It must be in line with the law and legal process. 'The truth cannot be established by taking at face value what the pathologist who was detained yesterday said, or by believing the theory of a teacher claiming Zara was murdered and abused with a washing machine. 'Truth and justice must go through the legal investigation process. Who has the authority to conduct legal investigations? The police, and that is exactly what we are doing," he told reporters after the Home Ministry's National Day and Malaysia Day celebration and its monthly assembly here today. Saifuddin said the ministry is aware that many rumours surrounding the student's death are being circulated and that such claims will not stop. He said although he had already presented the investigation report on the case in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, slander and false news would continue to spread. Saifuddin said so far, a total of 195 witness statements have been recorded to ensure the investigation is truly complete and comprehensive. 'Of course, it takes some time for us to properly update the case, and that was what we submitted last Monday, which subsequently led to the Attorney-General's Chambers making an announcement (that five underage teenagers were charged today under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code in the Kota Kinabalu Juvenile Court).

National Council For Local Government To Adopt New Service Efficiency Act

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The 86th National Council for Local Government (MNKT) meeting today agreed to implement the Government Service Efficiency Commitment Act 2025 (Act 867) at the state and local authority levels to strengthen the public service reform agenda. Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming, outlined that Act 867 focuses on four key principles: improving service efficiency, reducing bureaucratic red tape by at least 25 per cent, enhancing accountability in governance, and ensuring effective regulation through structural reforms. 'The government will review outdated regulatory instruments that burden the public and the business community. We aim to reduce regulatory burdens by 25 per cent, introduce a 'One In, One Out' approach for regulatory documents, and establish a performance rating system for services. 'This includes offering financial incentives to civil servants for their performance, with recognition and rewards,' Nga said in a statement today. The Government Service Efficiency Commitment Bill 2025, designed to improve the quality and effectiveness of government services, was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on March 6 and in the Dewan Negara on March 25. In addition to the bill, the MNKT meeting also reviewed the 2025 Urban Renewal Bill. This new legislation aims to facilitate efficient, inclusive, and sustainable urban redevelopment. The council also discussed guidelines for parking spaces for persons with disabilities (PWD), ensuring a more consistent approach nationwide. 'A proposal was made to implement central cooling systems in industrial zones, which could reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs, and improve industrial efficiency. We also discussed guidelines for solar farm planning to ensure renewable energy development is both environmentally friendly and beneficial to local communities,' Nga added. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, reiterated the Federal government's commitment to strengthening cooperation between the state governments and local authorities, with the goal of realising Malaysia MADANI's aspirations.
