Players on the payments turf: UPI, AePS, PPIs boost digital outreach
Tamal Bandyopadhyay
Listen to This Article
In the last week of June, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued guidelines to strengthen the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, or AePS.
All of us are familiar with UPI – Unified Payments Interface. What's AePS?
We can call AePS UPI's elder brother. Launched in 2011, five years before UPI came into being, it's a bank-led model that allows online, interoperable financial transactions at MicroATM terminals using Aadhaar authentication. Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number for all residents of India, based on their biometrics and demographic data.
UPI, in contrast, is a system that allows for real-time, person-to-person and

Currency watch: Rupee drops 48 paise to 87.66 against dollar; FII outflows, tariff worries drag
AI image The rupee plunged 48 paise to close at 87.66 against the US dollar on Monday, weighed down by persistent foreign fund outflows, global trade concerns, and rising dollar demand from oil importers. The Indian currency opened at 87.21 and touched an intraday low of 87.73 at the interbank foreign exchange market before settling 48 paise lower from its previous close of 87.18. On Friday, the rupee had staged a sharp rebound of 47 paise, PTI reported. Forex traders attributed the pressure to renewed fears over a wider trade disruption after US President Donald Trump's tariff measures resurfaced. Demand from oil marketing companies also added to the rupee's weakness. 'We expect the rupee to remain weak amid uncertainty over the India-US trade deal and foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows,' said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, commodities and currencies, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. 'However, weakness in the US dollar amid chatter over rate cut expectations in the US due to weak economic data may support the rupee at lower levels,' he added. Choudhary expects the USD-INR pair to trade in a range of 87.40 to 88. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bogota: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo Traders are now eyeing factory order data from the US and the Reserve Bank of India's upcoming monetary policy. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), chaired by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, began its three-day meeting on Monday. The outcome of the rate decision will be announced on Wednesday. Brent crude futures fell 1.06% to $68.93 per barrel as OPEC+ confirmed a production hike from September, while softening demand expectations in the US and tariff risks also weighed. The US dollar index, which measures the greenback's strength against six major currencies, was down 0.37% at 98.77. Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, said the rupee's fall was also driven by foreign fund withdrawals and liquidity adjustments linked to a maturing $5 billion forex swap conducted by the RBI. "The forward premium rates also jumped to reflect the potential interest rate differential between the US and India after Friday's jobs data," he noted. US non-farm payroll data showed the economy added just 74,000 jobs in July, well below expectations of 106,000. The June figure was sharply revised to 14,000 from the earlier estimate of 147,000 — increasing pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. Despite the currency weakness, Indian equities ended higher. The BSE Sensex gained 418.81 points to close at 81,018.72, while the Nifty climbed 157.40 points to 24,722.75. FIIs remained net sellers, pulling out Rs 2,566.51 crore from domestic equities on Monday, as per exchange data. The retailer in India traditionally provides a low-margin service, frequently provides credit, and may source merchandise for specific needs Listen to This Article Retail is changing in character, and India is undoubtedly at the forefront of this development globally. It is quite evident that consumers in India have taken to ecommerce in a big way. My home, for instance, has shifted almost completely to ordering online — so much so that even the maid is doing so. And if stories are to be believed, tier-III and tier-IV cities, as well as rural India, are also seeing rapid growth in online ecommerce. No doubt, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Aadhaar and other components of India's digital public infrastructure have helped drive this growth. Easy

EPFO rule: UAN to be generated only via Aadhaar-based face authentication; check details
The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced that the allotment and generation of Universal Account Number (UAN) will be done only through the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in the UMANG App. The new rule came into force on August 1, 2025. However, the existing process of generating UAN through the employer will continue in exceptional cases, such as for international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan. A circular dated July 30, 2025, invoked a previous EPFO circular dated April 8, 2025, where three EPFO facilities for employees/ members were introduced in the UMANG app by leveraging the Face Authentication Technology. 1. Allotment of UAN and activation 2. UAN activation for existing UANs 3. Face authentication service for existing activated UANs To avail this facility, EPFO subscribers are meant to download the UMANG app and the Aadhaar Face RD App from the Play Store. Notably, the above facility can be availed by the members themselves using their mobile phones without having to speak to the employer. Meanwhile, this facility is also available for downloading the e-UAN card PDF for handing over to the employer for onboarding with EPFO. Members using Face Authentication Technology would accrue benefits, including foolproof validation of Aadhaar data, as the user's data is pre-populated directly from the Aadhaar database, and completion of the UAN activation process during UAN generation itself. There would be no requirement for initiating the UAN activation process afresh. By using this facility, members gain immediate access to EPFO services such as passbook viewing, KYC updates, claim submission, etc. To access any UAN-related service, members must have access to the following: • Access to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number for verification of one-time password (OTP). • Aadhaar Face RD App for face authentication These are the steps to follow to get UAN allotment. 1. Open Umang and go to 'UAN allotment and activation'. 2. Now you need to enter the Aadhaar number, mobile number and check the consent checkbox for Aadhaar validation. 3. You can now tap 'send OTP'. A. Install the Aadhaar Face RD App if prompted. B. Enter the OTP sent to your mobile. 4. System checks if Aadhaar is already linked to a UAN: A. If yes: You'll be notified. B. If no: Proceed to Face Authentication. 5. Here you can opt for Face authentication: a. Check the consent box. b. Tap Face Authentication. c. The system will perform the face scan. 6. System fetches details and generates a new UAN. 7. Finally, UAN is sent to your registered mobile number via SMS. For personal finance updates, visit here
