Tourism remains Sabah's economic driving force
KOTA KINABALU (June 19): Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said tourism remains the driving force of Sabah's economy, creating more than 380,000 jobs across various sectors.
He said that Sabah's tourism industry contributed approximately 15 per cent of the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) last year and recorded a significant achievement in 2023, contributing RM13.1 billion to the state's economy.
'Yet, statistics alone do not tell the whole story. Behind each number lies a livelihood, a
family and individuals who have contributed to the tourism economy.
'We have witnessed firsthand how tourism uplifts communities, and we take pride in our progress in community-based tourism here in Sabah,' he said at the launching of the ASEAN Travel Exchange (ATEX 2025) at Magellan Sutera Resort here on Thursday.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew delivered his speech.
He said Sabah is home to many community-based tourism operators, and these initiatives were spearheaded by individuals and families from local villages, particularly rural communities, who create experiences that are distinctly Sabahan.
'As we speak, community-based tourism continues to expand in Sabah due to its immense potential to grow the economy, especially in the rural areas of Sabah.
'In 2024, the total state revenue contribution from this sector amounted to RM7 million from 18 active districts. More community-based initiatives in the rural districts are being introduced to benefit the rural communities,' he said.
Hajiji said the State Government is committed to the tourism industry's development.
'We are investing in infrastructure with ongoing upgrades to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, improved road conditions giving access to rural tourism areas and enhanced digital platforms designed to promote and manage visitor experiences effectively.
'We are laying the foundation for a resilient and future-ready tourism economy. Sabah's strategy includes embracing green economy principles, advocating for digital transformation, and enhancing our profile as a premier venue and host for international tourism events,' he said.
The Chief Minister said Sabah envisioned itself as a peace hub – a state where businesses thrive, culture, history, and nature exist harmoniously, and development is always balanced with responsibility and sustainability.
'We aspire to be a model demonstrating how tourism can succeed while preserving the very elements that make it unique – our environment, cultures and communities,' he said.
Hajiji said ATEX 2025 marked a significant milestone for Sabah as it presents an opportunity to position the state not only as a destination but also as a strategic partner in shaping ASEAN's tourism future.
'We warmly welcome industry leaders from across the region to our shores, inviting all of them to deepen friendships to spark new business ventures and share in the journey ahead,' he said.
At the same time, he noted that ATEX 2025 serves as a reminder of just how powerful the combination of tourism, travel, hospitality and aviation can be.
'It creates a robust engine of growth and movement that generates vast opportunities for shared experiences.
'Hosting ATEX 2025 in Kota Kinabalu is not just an honour for us in Sabah, but it is also a platform brimming with potential. It offers us the chance to learn from one another, forge new connections, and collectively shape the future of tourism in this region,' he said.

Sabah committed to highest standards of tourist safety
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 12): Sabah remains firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of tourist safety, said Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew. She gave the assurance in her welcome address at the Coordination Meeting on Tourism with Federal and State agencies, chaired by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Dato' Sri Tiong King Sing, at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru here on Tuesday. 'On behalf of the State Government, I extend my sincere appreciation to MOTAC for its continuous support in strengthening Malaysia's tourism industry. With strong collaboration between MOTAC, the State Government and our enforcement agencies, I am confident that we can make Sabah not only one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, but also one of the safest,' Liew said. She also thanked Tiong for his consistent concern over safety issues affecting Semporna in particular, adding: 'We believe we share the same commitment, and the progress we've made is aligned with the Federal Government. 'For us, ensuring a safe tourism environment is not just about protecting lives and prioritising well-being, but also about safeguarding Malaysia's reputation as a world-class travel destination. Your continued attention and commitment to this matter means a lot,' she said. Liew stressed that tourist safety is critical to maintaining the confidence of both domestic and international travellers, as well as potential investors. 'In this age of social media, even news of an isolated safety incident can spread rapidly and adversely impact our tourism image. That is why we must always remain vigilant.' Acknowledging recent safety concerns involving accidents during scuba diving, snorkelling, and stand-up paddleboarding in marine and island areas, Liew said these highlight the need for stronger safety protocols, strict SOP compliance, and enhanced training for guides and boat operators. She said the State Government has strengthened collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to boost patrols and monitoring. Multilingual safety signage has also been installed at high-risk tourist locations, including the arrival halls of Tawau and Sandakan airports. Also present were Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, MOTAC Secretary-General Dato' Shaharudin Abu Sohot, Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datuk Norlija @ Norlijah Danin, Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai, Deputy Permanent Secretary I Mary Malangking, Sabah Parks Director Datuk Dr Maklarin Lakim, and Sabah Tourism Board (STB) CEO Julinus Jeffery Jimit, along with MOTAC delegations.

Kimanis energy project to boost Sabah's grid in Oct

Dynac JV Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Wira Ir. Md Sidek Ahmad stated that the nearly RM1 billion project will strengthen Sabah's electricity supply and benefit the entire state. 'The development of the Kimanis energy project is one of the initiatives to help improve or rehabilitate the electricity situation, particularly in Sabah. 'The project implementation was awarded to Dynac JV Sdn Bhd in September last year, with commissioning and project execution anticipated to begin this October. 'We hope to play a significant role in developing energy projects to meet Sabah's growing demands,' he told the media after a courtesy call on the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday. He added that the visit aimed to brief Tun Musa on the project's progress, which will add 100 megawatts to the state's electricity grid, thereby enhancing long-term capacity and supply stability. Accompanied by his Chief Operating Officer, Sharizal Md Sidek, he also highlighted that the project creates opportunities and develops local workforce capacity. 'We are also focused on hiring local workers, particularly university-graduate engineers in Sabah,' he added. Tun Musa also received a courtesy call from Angkatan Hebat Sdn Bhd. Chairman of the vehicle rental company, Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Rahim Ismail, informed the Governor that Angkatan Hebat aims to increase its fleet by 400 units over a three-year period starting this year. Abdul Rahim stated that the company has recorded continuous profits over the past four years and is now in a strong financial position. 'Although the company previously faced financial challenges, it has now successfully recovered. Last year, the company recorded a post-tax profit of RM9 million, and this year we are targeting a profit of around RM7 million. 'I am confident this positive progress will further strengthen the company's position and benefit the local economy and community. 'Angkatan Hebat currently owns 600 vehicles and aims to increase this to 1,000 units within the next two to three years. 'This effort is expected to be achieved with purchase support from several government departments and approval from the Ministry of Finance,' he said. He also informed that the company, which manages the vehicle fleet for the Sabah State Government, actively implements corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives by channeling aid to suraus, churches, schools, tahfiz centers, and other community groups through special allocations managed by the administration. Also present were Deputy Chairman Datuk Dr Stephen Jacob Jimbangan, Chief Executive Officer Faez Ainstein Nordin, and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Kwan Yeen Yee. The Sabah Indian Association (SIA) also called on Tun Musa. Its president, Didar Singh, said the association remains committed to advancing education and providing facilities for the younger generation in the state, regardless of ethnic background. He stated that these initiatives include providing internet access at the association's building, developing new facilities, and organizing various activities for youth engagement. 'We want the available space at SIA to be utilized for educational and learning activities so that young people can thrive,' he said. The visit aimed to strengthen the association's rapport and introduce SIA's new leadership to Tun Musa. Beyond educational contributions, SIA which has over 1,000 members including professionals, also organizes community programs such as goodwill dinners, blood donation campaigns, and encourages new membership registrations.

GRS-PH cooperation formula to continue - Hajiji

RANAU (Aug 12): Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor reiterated that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has agreed to maintain the present formula of cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming state election. He said history has shown that a state government needs to have a strong relationship with the Federal Government. 'We want strong ties with the Federal Government. We want stability and we hope the people will understand that we are doing the best for them. To bring prosperity to them,' he said this during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Paginatan new township held at the Nunuk Ragang Memorial open-air hall, near here on Tuesday. The Chief Minister said the present GRS-PH State Government's track record of bringing progress to Sabah has been proven. 'We have more than 400 initiatives under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda, and about 94 per cent of them have already been implemented,' he said. Hajiji said this was contrary to the opposition's claim, which he said was intended to pull wool over the people's eyes. Hajiji said the GRS-PH government had approved numerous assistance programmes for the state's education development and people's prosperity, which had never been done by other state governments before. 'This year alone, we are giving monthly assistance of RM300 to nearly 100,000 hardcore poor, and this initiative will be continued if the people returned the mandate to GRS-PH in the coming election,' he said. He also said that the GRS-PH State Government had succeeded in getting greater participation in the oil and gas sector through the historic signing of the Commercial Collaborative Agreement (CCA) with Petronas in 2021. Earlier, he said that the State Government, through the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (SHTDA), is committed to continuing its agenda of addressing urban and rural poverty in the state through the new township development programme. He said the long-awaited Paginatan New Township project is expected to drive the local economy in the area, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development roadmap, which at its core, aims at prioritising the well-being of the people and improving their quality of life. The 200-acre new township, located approximately 43 km from here, will be developed in five phases, involving the construction of various important amenities, including government offices, shops, low-cost housing, multi-purpose hall, library, health centre, market, police and fire stations. Once completed, the people in Paginatan would no longer have to go to Ranau or Telupid to deal with government departments, he said. Hajiji also assured that issues affecting the people in Paginatan constituency that were raised by its assemblyman, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, would be addressed.
