Raj Thackeray's MNS Continues Rampage, Assaults Mumbai Coaching Centre Head

NDTV7 days ago
Mumbai:
Political thuggery reared its ugly head in Maharashtra again after goons from Raj Thackeray 's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena assaulted the head of an academic coaching centre near Mumbai.
In a two-and-a-half-minute video shared online three MNS men sit across a desk from the Siddharth Singh Chandel, who runs the Siddhartha Logic coaching centre in the city's Kalyan suburb that preps students for competitive examinations, including for entry to the Indian Administrative Service.
Mr Chandel, the goons had alleged, charged high fees but did not take classes.
In the video Mr Chandel - who is on a mobile phone - tries to pacify the ruffians.
But the situation escalates quickly; seconds into the clip one of the goons slaps him and a second throws a stainless-steel bottle at him. Taken aback Mr Chandel tries to pacify them again.
But then a third man throws a wooden plaque at Mr Chandel.
Meanwhile, huddled in the corner of the room there are some young girls, one of whom is filming the attack on her mobile phone. One of the goons calls another who points accusingly at Mr Chandel.
By this time the MNS goons have come around the table menacingly.
The video cuts out with Mr Chandel on his feet and being threatened by one of his attackers.
Incidents of Raj Thackeray's MNS thugs attacking people - over 'insults' to the Marathi language and people, and emboldened by political protection - have increased over the past weeks, particularly after the assault of a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Mira Road and another in Vikhroli.
There have also been attacks on auto drivers who migrated to Mumbai in search of jobs.
Neither the party nor Mr Thackeray have apologised or even acknowledged the horrific impropriety of their actions. In fact, the MNS chief has defended and even praised the attackers.
And his party has warned of more attacks and violence if Mr Thackeray is criticised.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray has refused to apolgoise for attacks by his party workers (File).
And, in each case, the party thugs were protected from police action.
In the assault on the Mira Road shopkeeper, for example, the seven men involved in the attack were only summoned by the cops after pressure from NDTV, and were then released without any action.
That several attacks were filmed and there were still no arrests is a matter of concern.
At the heart of this are protests against state government orders - in April and June - making Hindi a 'mandatory' language for students from Class I to V in all schools across Maharashtra.
Raj Thackeray has rallied behind Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena faction, with the estranged cousins - son and nephew of Sena founder Bal Thackeray - to protest the 'imposition' of Hindi.

Violence over the Marathi language also triggered a political row between the MNS and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, with BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and Mr Thackeray exchanging barbs.
What was shocking was Home Minister Yogesh Kadam's response; he said 'action will be taken' against anyone who 'disrespects Marathi', but made no mention of punishing the hooligans. "Marathi will have to be spoken in Maharashtra..."

‘She will not let attack pass without fitting response': Stalin backs Mamata on ‘Bangladeshi language' row

Amid the ongoing row between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Centre, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and fellow INDIA Bloc leader M K Stalin Monday came out in support West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, stating that the TMC supremo stands as 'a shield' for the language and the people of Bengal. His latest remark is in response to a letter from the Delhi Police in which Bangla is referred to as 'Bangladeshi language'. Speaking out 'in the face of assault on non-Hindi languages', Stalin, in a strongly worded post on X, said: 'Hon'ble @MamataOfficial Didi stands as a shield for the language and people of West Bengal. She will not let this attack pass without a fitting response.' He also said it is a direct insult to the very language in which India's national anthem was written in. 'Such statements are not inadvertent errors or slips. They expose the dark mindset of a regime that consistently undermines diversity and weaponises identity,' the DMK leader added. 'Is there no limit to @BJP4India's hatred for Bengalis? After repeatedly harassing and detaining Bengali-speaking workers across BJP-ruled states, @AmitShah's @DelhiPolice has now crossed all lines by officially branding our mother tongue, Bangla, as the 'Bangladeshi language',' the party's post on X read. The BJP at the Centre hit back, accusing the TMC of shielding illegal Bangladeshi settlers. The ongoing row was triggered after CM Mamata, at her recent rallies, highlighted an issue of allegations of harassment faced by migrant workers from Bengal in BJP-ruled states on suspicion of being Bangladeshis. The letter dated July 24, written by Inspector Amit Dutt from Lodhi Colony Police Station to Officer-in-charge of Banga Bhawan, requested for a translator to decipher documents seized from suspected Bangladeshi nationals. It said that police needed an interpreter 'proficient in Bangladeshi national language' to translate documents for a case involving eight persons 'strongly suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India'. 'Upon inquiry, copies of national ID cards, birth certificates, bank account details etc. were found from these suspected Bangladeshi nationals. The suspected Bangladeshi nationals were arrested and remanded in judicial custody on the order of the honorable court concerned,' the letter stated. Inspector Dutt, the Investigating Officer, wrote in the letter that the identification documents contain texts written in 'Bangladeshi' and are needed to be translated to Hindi and English. 'Now, for the investigation to proceed further, it is requested that an official translator /interpreter proficient in Bangladeshi national language may kindly be provided for the aforesaid purpose,' the letter said. 'Emphasis is laid on the fact that the requisite report would be a pivotal piece of evidence for successful prosecution of suspected Bangladeshi nationals facing trial. Expeditious disposal of this letter is desired as the same is required to be submitted before the honorable court in a timed manner. Any bills raised against the translation service shall be payable by the department and a quotation for the same may be communicated before hand,' Dutt said in the letter. Although senior police officers confirmed that the letter was sent to Banga Bhawan, an official response from Delhi Police is awaited.

Delhi Police's description of Bengali an insult to language in which national anthem was written: Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed solidarity with his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee, and objected to the Delhi Police – under the Union Home Ministry – reportedly describing Bengali as a 'Bangladeshi language'. 'This is a direct insult to the very language in which our national anthem was written,' Mr. Stalin said in a social media post on Monday (August 4, 2025) morning. Mr. Stalin said such statements were not inadvertent errors or slip-ups, but they exposed 'the dark mindset of a regime that consistently undermines diversity and weaponises identity'. In the face of this 'assault on non-Hindi languages', Ms. Banerjee stood as a shield for the language and people of West Bengal, who would not let this attack pass without a fitting response, Mr. Stalin said. Ms. Banerjee had stated that a purported communication by the Delhi Police had reportedly referred to Bengali as a 'Bangladeshi language'. She had termed it 'scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional', and further contended that it insulted all Bengali-speaking people of India. She had further said that they 'cannot use this kind of language, which degrades and debases us all'. She had said: 'Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our national anthem and the national song (the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay) are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!' Ms. Banerjee had further said: 'We urge immediate strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Government of India, which is using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali-speaking people of India.'
