Trump-PM Modi call: Congress takes ‘Triple Jhatka' jab; BJP hits back, calls Jairam Ramesh 'congenital liar'

NEW DELHI: The phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, in which PM Modi shared details about the ceasefire and Operation Sindoor, has emerged as the newest point of political conflict between the Congress and the BJP.
While Congress criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that India has faced a "triple jhatka" in foreign policy and diplomacy, the BJP called Congress the "biggest cultivator of fake news."
Referring to the recent phone call between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Pakistan's Field Marshal Asim Munir, whose comments are linked to the Pahalgam terror attacks, has been invited for a one-on-one lunch with President Trump.
"Understand the 'triple jhatka' that the Indian foreign policy and diplomacy has received. Today (Pakistan's) Field Marshal Asim Munir, whose provocative, incendiary, and inflammatory comments are directly linked to the Pahalgam terror attacks. He is today invited for a one-on-one special lunch with President Trump. This is a setback for Indian diplomacy. We are quiet about it, we have not objected to it", Ramesh said while talking to the news agency ANI.
He also pointed to recent remarks made by General Michael Kurilla, head of the US Central Command, who referred to Pakistan as a "phenomenal partner" in counter-terrorism. Ramesh said this contrasts with India's view of Pakistan.
"Second, General Michael Kurilla, who is the head of the US Central Command, says that Pakistan is a phenomenal partner in counter-terrorism. We are saying Pakistan is a phenomenal perpetrator...Third,
from May 10 onwards, 14 times President Trump has been claiming that he mediated a ceasefire (between India and Pakistan), he used trade as an instrument, he put Pakistan and India together", he added.
"This is triple jhatka to Howdy Modi by Namaste Trump! Indian diplomacy is being shattered and the PM is totally silent," Ramesh said in a post on X.
Ramesh repeated the opposition's demand for a special Parliament session.
He said the Prime Minister should make the same statements in Parliament that were shared in the official readout of the 35-minute phone call with Trump by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
"PM was silent. This was not countered (Trump's claim). Today, we are told that he had a 35-minute phone call with President Trump, and he said many of the things that the Foreign Secretary has given a readout...Say the same thing in Parliament.
Call a special session of Parliament...Call an all-party meeting tomorrow...and say the same things that you have supposedly told President Trump on the phone...We want a debate in Parliament, we want a constructive debate, we want an all-party meeting.
We want to show unity and solidarity", Ramesh said.
BJP hits back
Meanwhile, the BJP strongly hit back at Congress and Ramesh, calling the Congress leader "a congenital liar".
"Jairam Ramesh is a congenital liar — much like Rahul Gandhi," BJP's Amit Malviya said in a post on X.
"The Congress and its troll army simply can't digest the fact that Prime Minister Modi told President Trump in clear terms — India neither needs nor accepts any third-party mediation," Malviya added.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the Congress, describing it as the "biggest supplier, spreader and cultivator" of fake news.
"Congress relishes in descending into 'Bharat virodh' just because it does 'BJP virodh'... Sena ka apman, Pakistan ka gungan seems to have become Congress ki only pehchaan," Poonawalla said while talking to news agency ANI.
"... Congress is the biggest supplier, spreader and cultivator of fake news," he added.

Donald Trump to extend TikTok deadline by 90 days
Donald Trump will extend the June 19 deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell the US operations of TikTok by another 90 days, the White House said on Tuesday, June 17. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the decision. She said 'President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok up and running.' Adding further, she said 'President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark,' saying the next three months will be used to work on closing the sale and ensuring that American users' data is protected. With the new deadline, TikTok will get more time to complete the sale, which is required under US law unless significant progress has been made. Trump says China's approval may be needed for TikTok sale Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he expected to approve the extension. When asked, he replied, 'Probably, yeah. Probably have to get China approval but I think we'll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.' In May, Trump had already indicated he would extend the deadline, partly because of the app's popularity with young voters during the 2024 election. What the US law says The law required ByteDance to sell TikTok's US assets or shut down the app by January 19, unless it showed major progress toward a sale. Trump, who began his second term on January 20, chose not to enforce the deadline and has since extended it twice—first to early April and then to June 19.] A deal was being discussed earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US business into a company controlled by American investors. However, the talks stalled after China pushed back following Trump's announcement of new tariffs on Chinese imports. In March, Trump said he was open to lowering tariffs on China if that helped move the TikTok sale forward. The app currently has about 170 million users in the US. 'I don't care what she said': Trump on Tulsi Gabbard's Iran nukes claim
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) publicly rejected the assessment of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard regarding Iran's nuclear program. Speaking to reporters while returning from the G7 summit in Canada, Trump contradicted Gabbard's testimony to Congress that Iran is not currently pursuing nuclear weapons. Instead, he sided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has consistently claimed that Iran is inching closer to nuclear capability, justifying Israel's airstrikes on Iranian positions. When asked how close Iran was to developing a nuclear bomb, Trump responded, 'Very close.' Reporters also pointed out Gabbard's earlier statement to Congress in March this year, where she said US intelligence agencies believed Iran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program. To this, Trump replied, 'I don't care what she said. I think they were very close to having one.' This marks the first time in his second term that Trump has directly challenged Gabbard's view on Iran's nuclear intentions. Ongoing tensions with US intelligence Trump has a long history of clashing with intelligence officials. During his first term, he repeatedly cast doubt on agency findings — including the widely accepted conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help his campaign. At one point, he even sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin's denials over US intelligence assessments during a summit in Helsinki. Intelligence agencies differ on Iran threat Meanwhile, Director Gabbard's position remains unchanged, according to a Reuters report. Her office maintains that US intelligence believes Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has not given orders to restart a nuclear weapons program. Iran, for its part, continues to deny any intent to develop nuclear arms. It insists that its uranium enrichment activities are for peaceful, civilian use. According to Gabbard's briefing to Congress, even if Iran decided to restart its weapons program today, it would still need up to three years to develop a nuclear warhead capable of targeting other nations. On the other hand, Netanyahu, who has long warned about Iran's nuclear ambitions, welcomed Trump's stance. He has argued that pre-emptive Israeli action is necessary to prevent Iran from reaching weapons-grade nuclear capability.
