Manager Danny Rohl leaves Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent

Leader Live3 days ago
The German became the youngest boss in the Football League when he took on his first managerial role in October 2023, at a time when Wednesday seemed destined for relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.
Rohl, a former assistant of the German national team as well as Southampton and Bayern Munich, turned around a sinking ship and last season led the club to a respectable 12th place in the second tier.
However, with less than a fortnight to go until the start of the new Championship campaign, the Owls, who travel to Leicester on August 10, have revealed the 36-year-old has left his position.
'Sheffield Wednesday can confirm the departure of manager Danny Rohl by mutual consent,' a club statement read.

Wednesday also confirmed backroom staff members Sascha Lense, Chris Powell, Neil Thompson and Sal Bibbo have followed Rohl, linked with a string of jobs in England and the Bundesliga, out the door.
Assistant Henrik Pedersen remains in South Yorkshire, having put pen to paper on a new deal earlier this month, and he is now the favourite to replace Rohl as manager although no announcement was made.
Rohl's future at Hillsborough had been uncertain for several months as he said after their final game of last season that he had made his position to the club's hierarchy 'very clear'.
Wednesday are under a three-window fee restriction imposed by the English Football League over late payments to players, and are also under a transfer embargo, while owner Dejphon Chansiri is looking to sell the club.
Rohl said on Instagram: 'A very special time is coming to an end and I am incredibly grateful for the experiences we have shared over 21 unforgettable months together.

'I thank our chairman for his faith and giving me the opportunity to take my first steps as a manager.
'I thank my players for such a successful collaboration, your tireless commitment and for being great humans. I am proud of all of your personal resilience and efforts.
'This summer has been difficult and, in the end, the club and I came to the mutual decision to part ways. I understand the different thoughts and reactions to everything that has been going on during these past few months.
'I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity. Even during the difficult moments and setbacks, I have always continued to feel the support from everyone. I take so many special moments away with me that will remain in my heart.
'We achieved a miracle together and that will always be something truly exceptional. I wish everyone associated with Wednesday my very best. I will never forget you. The Gaffer.'

Concern within EFL over whether Sheffield Wednesday can play opening fixture

It is understood Wednesday players have refused to feature in a scheduled behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley on Saturday after the club failed to pay their wages on time. The Owls are currently under an EFL embargo for unpaid transfer fees and owner Dejphon Chansiri is trying to sell the cash-strapped club. Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has been in talks to sell the club (Mike Egerton/PA) Wednesday appointed Henrik Pedersen as their new head coach on Thursday following the departure of Danny Rohl and, just hours later, Saturday's friendly was cancelled as players and coaching staff decided to boycott the match after not receiving July's monthly salary on time. Rohl left Hillsborough on Tuesday amid a chaotic summer which has seen the club placed under a number of embargoes because of financial issues. Players were paid late in May and June, while this is the fourth time in the last five months that salaries have been delayed. PA understands there is increasing concern within the EFL over the escalating crisis at the club and that extends to whether Wednesday will be able to fulfil their opening Championship fixture at Leicester on August 10. Thai businessman Chansiri completed his takeover from previous owner Milan Mandaric in January 2015 for a reported £30million and the club twice went close to promotion to the Premier League when losing out in the 2016 and 2017 play-offs. We are delighted to announce the appointment of Henrik Pedersen as our new manager. The Dane takes the S6 reins with immediate effect#swfc — Sheffield Wednesday (@swfc) July 31, 2025 Since then Wednesday have lurched from one financial crisis to another. They were first placed under an EFL embargo in 2017 over profitability and sustainability rules and were docked 12 points – reduced to six on appeal – at the start of the 2020-21 season for further financial breaches. The Owls were placed under embargo for late salary payments to players and staff in 2024, while a player registration embargo is also in place for unpaid transfer fees. New boss Pedersen admitted the club were in 'rough waters' following his appointment, with registration restrictions and the departure of several key players leaving him with a threadbare squad. Josh Windass joined Wrexham after his Wednesday contract was ended by mutual consent (Mike Egerton/PA) Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba have been sold this summer to Rangers and Samsunspor respectively, while Josh Windass and Michael Smith had their contracts terminated by mutual consent to allow them to join Wrexham and Preston. The latest missed payments to players and staff heaps further pressure on Chansiri, who insists he is willing to sell the club for the right price. He recently revealed he had rejected one consortium's £40million bid, while talks with various other interested parties have stalled.

Tottenham targeting loan move for Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha

Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham last summer in a deal worth up to £47.4million, but endured a difficult debut campaign in Germany. The Portugal midfielder struggled with injury problems and only made six starts in the Bundesliga when fit under Bayern boss Vincent Kompany, which has opened the door for a temporary move back to London with Tottenham. Spurs have plenty of options in midfield, but have multiple competitions to deal with in the 2025-26 season after their Europa League victory in May secured Champions League qualification and the addition of Palhinha would be a boost for new head coach Thomas Frank. Palhinha, who turned 30 earlier this month, was linked with a transfer to Tottenham before he signed for Bayern. The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder enjoyed a successful two years at Fulham, where he made 79 appearances and scored eight times to become a fan favourite at Craven Cottage. Spurs secured the services of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham at the start of July, but failed in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White and will now hope to land Palhinha on a season-long loan.
