LSU baseball releiver Chase Shores selected by Los Angeles Angels in 2025 MLB Draft

USA Today14-07-2025
LSU pitcher Chase Shores was selected in the second round of the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday. The Los Angeles Angels got him with the No. 47 overall pick.
The right-hander has experience as a starter and reliever through his three seasons at LSU but was sidelined after Tommy John surgery for almost two years. In 2025, as a redshirt sophomore, Shores worked through multiple roles and showed off his high velocity on the biggest stage.
Shores hurled three scoreless outings in the College World Series, which included getting the final outs in Game 2 of the College World Series finals when LSU won the national championship. He compiled 13 strikeouts through high-leverage appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
There was some discussion about where Shroes would go in the draft. His LSU career was inconsistent, and there are injury concerns, but the stuff is electric. Now, Sures is all but surely heading to the professional ranks. Most times, prospects selected during the MLB Draft's first three rounds join their teams immediately.
How quickly Shores climbs the professional ranks will depend on his role. He could advance quickly through the minors as a reliever due to his high velocity, but would need more development as a starter. The Angels likely won't be competing for a World Series anytime soon, so they could take their time in building his stuff.

Andrew McCutchen Sends Message After Comments on Pirates Future Surface

Andrew McCutchen has been back home in Pittsburgh since 2023. The 38-year-old began his career on the Pirates in 2009 before spending time on the San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers. He spent one year with the Giants, Yankees, and Brewers. A three-year stint in Philly wasn't enough as the veteran continued to keep his name in the mix. He's been back in Pittsburgh for the last three seasons. While his numbers may not be off the charts, he's seen an uptick in production compared to last season. When speculation surfaced on Monday about his future, he was quick to clear up his remarks. Andrew McCutchen Clarifies Pittsburgh Columnist's Social Media Post Jason Mackey took to social media to discuss the conversation he had with McCutchen ahead of the Pirates' series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays. Mackey wrote of his conversation with McCutchen, "Says he's not talking about anything future-focused with the Pirates. As for his own situation, says he does want to play in 2026." When the reporter asked McCutchen if that would be in Pittsburgh, he responded, "I want to win. That's all. I have to do what I need to do, too." McCutchen was quick to respond to Mackey's post, "Dont take that quote out of context. 'I have to do what I need to do, too,' meaning I need to be able to produce offensively as well." The Pirates are dead last in the NL Central with their 52-73 record. As it stands, they trail the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by 27 games. Only the Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies have a greater division deficit. Offensively, the 17-year MLB veteran has one of his best averages dating back to 2021. Only 2023 has seen McCutchen's batting average be higher than the .241 it currently is. The outfielder is only six games shy of the amount he played in that season. McCutchen's Post on Monday Says A Lot MLB players don't always take the time out of their day to respond to a reporter, let alone a local one. McCutchen's time in Pittsburgh has meant a lot to him as it's clear he doesn't want Pirates fans to think he's turning his back on them. While his batting average is up, the Pirates veteran's OPS has fallen from .739 to .700. His WAR is below 1.0 for the second straight season. Currently, it's only 0.2. There's much more to baseball than just a batting average. Even though McCutchen has one number going back up, most of his numbers are pointing towards his better days being behind him. Brice Turang hits a 2-run homer as Brewers widen NL Central lead over Cubs with 4-1 win

CHICAGO (AP) — Brice Turang hit a two-run homer, Isaac Collins drove in two insurance runs and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Thursday. Turang and Sal Frelick each had two hits as the Brewers opened a seven-game lead over Chicago in the NL Central. Milwaukee took the finale in a five-game series at Wrigley Field after the Cubs won three straight. The Brewers won Monday's opener 7-0. Milwaukee starter Quinn Priester allowed one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings, but fell short of winning his 11th straight decision. The right-hander issued a season-high five walks while striking out four and was relieved by Nick Mears (5-3) in the fifth. Five Brewers relievers limited Chicago to two hits. Trevor MeGill worked around a single in the ninth for his 16th save. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga (8-6) allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings, striking out five. Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in the Cubs lone run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Chicago failed to cash in on eight walks and left 11 men on base. Slumping Cubs All-Star slugger Kyle Tucker returned to the lineup after sitting out three games and went 0-for-4 with a walk. Turang put the Brewers ahead in the second by sending Imanaga's 2-0 fastball to the right-field bleachers against a steady wind. Crow-Armstrong cut it to 2-1 in the fifth. Milwaukee put it away in the eighth when Collins singled in two runs of reliever Ryan Brasier. Key moment Priester issued his fifth walk, to Seiya Suzuki, with one out in the fifth to load the bases. Mears relieved and Crow-Armstrong delivered his sac fly. But Ian Happ flied out to end the inning and Milwaukee maintained a 2-1 lead. Key stat Turang is batting .377 (26-69) in August with eight homers and 20 RBIs. Up next Brewers: LHP José Quintana (10-4, 3.32 ERA) starts against the Giants on Friday in Milwaukee. Cubs: Play the Angels in Anaheim Friday night. ___ AP MLB:

HBCU Adds Big Ten Champs to Already Loaded Schedule

Coppin State women's basketball isn't ducking anyone. Fresh off announcing marquee matchups against South Carolina and Tennessee, the HBCU just added another giant to their 2025-26 gauntlet: Big Ten champion Ohio State. Head coach Darrell Mosley revealed that Coppin will face the Buckeyes on November 9 at Value City Arena in Columbus. The Eagles also tacked on a road game at SMU on December 10, rounding out a schedule that's quickly becoming one of the most ambitious in all of HBCU hoops. Coppin's four Power Conference opponents read like a who's who of women's college basketball royalty. The Eagles will open with Big Ten champion Ohio State on November 9 in Columbus, then travel to Knoxville on November 23 to face eight-time national champion Tennessee. On January 18, Coppin will welcome the 2024 national champion South Carolina Gamecocks to Baltimore, before closing the stretch with a December 10 trip to Dallas to battle AAC contender SMU. The matchup with Ohio State will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Buckeyes finished 26-7 last season, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and brought back Jaloni Cambridge, a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team pick and Co-Freshman of the Year. Guard Chance Gray returns after starting all 33 games and scoring over 1,000 career points, while Boston College transfer T'yana Todd adds one of the nation's top three-point strokes. In short, Coppin is stepping directly into the fire. For Coppin State, this isn't unfamiliar territory. Just two years ago, the Eagles hosted Angel Reese and LSU inside PEC Arena, giving Baltimore fans a courtside look at the eventual national champions and one of the most recognizable names in women's basketball. That willingness to challenge the sport's elite has become a calling card for the program. And now, under a new head coach, the Eagles are doubling down on that identity. The Mosley era at Coppin State is officially underway after a major coaching change this offseason. Longtime coach Jermaine Woods stepped away, and in stepped Darrell Mosley, a Baltimore native who spent the last three seasons at Arizona State-two as the Sun Devils' associate head coach. Mosley previously turned Lincoln (Pa.) into a perennial contender in the CIAA and brings 15 years of experience at the college level. Athletic Director Derek Carter called him "a leader ready to take Coppin to new heights," while Mosley himself vowed to build "a culture of excellence both on and off the court." Scheduling Ohio State, Tennessee, and South Carolina in Year One? That's a statement. For HBCU women's basketball, these types of games are more than just paydays-they're platforms. Coppin State players will test themselves against some of the best talent in the country, from WNBA prospects at Tennessee to one of the deepest Big Ten lineups at Ohio State. Win or lose, it's visibility that strengthens recruiting, energizes alumni, and shows that HBCU programs aren't afraid to swing big. And with Mosley at the helm, Coppin State is swinging harder than ever. The post HBCU Adds Big Ten Champs to Already Loaded Schedule appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Copyright HBCU Gameday 2012-2025
