Palakkad division RPF boosts passenger safety
Railway Protection Force
(RPF) in Palakkad railway division has apprehended 971 offenders so far this year, including trespassers, unauthorized passengers in reserved coaches and men found travelling in ladies' compartments.
Offenders were caught during daily joint patrols by the RPF and Govt Railway Police (GRP) during peak hours. Surprise checks in ladies' coaches have also been intensified to curb nuisance by anti-social elements.
The division also received 38 complaints through Rail Madad and other online platforms, which were promptly resolved, with offenders detained or arrested where required.
To further strengthen women's safety, especially for solo travellers, Palakkad's division's RPF has rolled out a focused initiative under the programme Meri Saheli.
Dedicated teams have been deployed at five major stations in Palakkad, Kannur, Kasaragod, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. These teams identify women travelling alone, sensitise them on safety precautions and share important contact information, including the Rail Madad helpline (139) and grievance platforms such as Instagram and Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System, for immediate assistance.

A total of 64 women RPF personnel have been specially nominated for this mission. On average, 11 women staff attend designated trains each day, interacting with about 230 solo women passengers. In 2025 alone, the initiative has benefitted 37,276 women travellers and has received positive public response.

On the run for 6 years for raping 2 minors, man held for woman's murder
1 2 Berhampur: A 29-year-old man, who was on the run for six years after allegedly raping two minor girls in Balasore district, was arrested by Berhampur police from Karnataka in connection with the recent murder of a woman. Police said the accused, a native of Balasore district, had taken a different name and allegedly got another Aadhaar card made using fraudulent means, mentioning his age as 27. Berhampur police, with the help of RPF from Wadi railway station in Karnataka, nabbed him and produced him in a court at Sedam, Chittapur in Karnataka on Aug 16. He was brought to Berhampur on Monday night on transit remand. According to the police, he had allegedly killed a 31-year-old married woman and injured her 11-year-old daughter in an area under the jurisdiction of Berhampur police district on the night of Aug 10. The accused had befriended the woman on social media in 2019, police added. Police said the accused and the woman were in a relationship. Due to some issues, the accused felt humiliated and planned to kill her. On the night of Aug 10, he went to her rented house and after a heated argument, he allegedly attacked her and her daughter with a sharp-edged weapon. After committing the murder, the accused locked the door from outside and fled the spot. The day after, the landlord informed the police and her husband, who works in Bhubaneswar, after he found the house locked while the lights and fans were on. "Based on CCTV footage, police identified the accused. A police team from Berhampur managed to trace his digital footprint to Karnataka, where they nabbed him," SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M said on Tuesday. During investigation, police realised the accused was wanted for allegedly raping two minors in 2019. The girls, aged 11 and 7, were his distant cousins. Police claimed he had fled to Mumbai following the crime, where he started work after changing his name. He has also confessed to his crime, the SP said. Former FSL chief booked for evidence tampering, caste slurs in corruption case against ex-minister
1 2 Mohali: Mohali police have registered a case against the former director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Punjab, Ashwani Kalia, on charges of tampering with evidence and using caste-based abuse in connection with a corruption case against former Punjab health minister and AAP Mansa MLA Vijay Singla. An FIR under Section 3(1) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has been lodged at Phase I police station after a complaint by Sandeep Kaur, assistant director (physical/audio) at FSL. Police sources said Kalia could be arrested anytime. The matter pertains to audio evidence in a 2022 case registered against Singla and his OSD, Pradeep Kumar, at Phase VIII police station for allegedly demanding a 1% commission from a contractor. Mohali police sent voice recordings purportedly featuring Singla to the FSL for authentication. Sandeep Kaur has alleged that Kalia attempted to illegally interfere in the examination process of the voice samples by pressuring her to alter the report. On Dec 11, 2024, Kalia reportedly split the unit into audio unit-1 and unit-2, assigning pending cases from 2021–23 to Kaur (unit-2) and new 2024 cases to himself (unit-1). She said the controversial case involving three audio parcels was received for examination and was finalised on Aug 8, 2024. Later, Kalia allegedly began demanding the case file while claiming it fell under his jurisdiction. He repeatedly directed junior staff to break open the sealed parcels and re-examine them, despite being told the report had already been submitted. Kaur alleged that Kalia's actions were aimed at altering the findings in a politically sensitive case involving the former minister. Congolese man, who acted in Kannada film as peddler, arrested with drugs in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: In a case of reality emulating reel life, a Congolese man who played a drug peddler in a Kannada film was caught with 180 grams of MDMA by a special team of Electronics City police. His associate, a Congolese woman, was also arrested after police seized around 1.8kg of MDMA from her residence. In all, cops seized 2kg of MDMA worth over Rs 5 crore from them. The accused — Joel Kabong, 28, from Hulimavu, and Joy Sunday, 23, of Vidyaranyapura — were selling MDMA in and around Electronics City to students and professionals. Police found photographs in Kabong's mobile clicked during the shooting of Kannada film Bheema, with lead actor Duniya Vijay waging war against the drug mafia. Kabong told police he had been roped in to act in the movie as a peddler. "He comes most evenings, particularly during weekends. With a backpack, he loiters on Neeladri Road. Sometimes, he places a packet on a spot, clicks its picture, and stands a little away. In a few minutes, a different person picks up the packet and vanishes," said Singh, sharing the inputs police received from residents. The special team, led by deputy commissioner of police M Narayana, started watching Kabong and caught him on the night of Aug 15. "He took us to Joy's Vidyaranyapura house. There, we recovered the remaining MDMA, packed and sealed inside packets of instant fortified milk cereal for babies," the investigating officer said. "The buyers would make online payments to Joy, and she would communicate the same to Kabong. Then, Kabong would place the MDMA-filled packet at some place, click a picture of it, and send it back to Joy, mentioning the location with latitude and longitude. Again, Joy would forward the same to customers, who, following the location, would come and take the packet," another police officer explained. In the past fortnight, city police, as part of a special drive against drugs, arrested four other accused and seized drugs worth over Rs 70 lakh, including 400 grams of MDMA and 22kg of ganja.
