Metro trial run in Thane likely in September and operations by December: Eknath Shinde
Once the project is completed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would enjoy seamless Metro connectivity, with last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions, Shinde told reporters after inaugurating the Thane Varsha Marathon.
"Efforts are on to conduct the trial run of the Metro in Thane in September. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing," he said.
He also said the preliminary work on Thane's internal Metro network has begun. "This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities," he added.
Referring to broader infrastructure plans, the deputy CM said the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane would ease traffic congestion and divert services to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) away from the city.
Mandate has been given to the collector, municipal chief and police commissioner to make Thane traffic congestion-free, he said.
"They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams," Shinde asserted.
Highlighting the recent development works in Thane, Shinde mentioned the rejuvenation of Jogila Lake, which had been encroached upon by nearly 250 huts.
"We have relocated the people who encroached the area and freed the lake. This is perhaps the first such project in the country where a lake has been completely restored and encroachments removed," he said.
On the Thane Varsha Marathon, organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation in collaboration with several sports organisations after a long gap, Shinde said more than 25,000 participants joined the run, underscoring the city's enthusiasm for community events.
He also praised the patriotism of wrestler-turned-politician and Shiv Sena leader Chandrahar Patil as well as his team from Kolhapur, who have gone to the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir to donate blood for soldiers. "Their effort reflects true love for the nation," he remarked.

India, Bangladesh DG-level border talks in Dhaka this month
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) India and Bangladesh are expected to hold their bi-annual border talks in Bangladesh this month-end. This will be the first time that the Indian delegation will travel to Dhaka post the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government last year. Talks are held between the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). A BGB delegation visited India in February for these talks. 'The 56th director general-level border talks between India and Bangladesh are expected to be held between August 25-28 at the BGB headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka. 'These talks were originally scheduled for July, but due to some administrative issues, they are now slated for this month," a source in the security establishment told PTI. A delegation led by BSF DG Daljit Singh Chawdhary will travel to Dhaka for these talks, the source said. BSF officials said a host of issues related to a variety of cross-border crimes along the 4,096 km long international front will be discussed during this meeting. The BSF is expected to take up the issue of illegal infiltration. It will also inform the BGB that it has provided about 5,000 body-worn cameras to its troops on this border so that the evidence of attacks on the force's personnel by miscreants and other such activities on the border can be recorded and a 'strong" action be launched, the officials said. They, however, said the talks were not expected to draw any concrete policy steps as Bangladesh currently has an interim government. Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government in Bangladesh, announced last week that general elections would be held in the country in February 2026. The announcement coincided with the first anniversary of the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime on August 5. The two border forces, during the talks held in Delhi in February, decided to establish a new communication link between the second-in-command rank officers (additional director general) and had identified about 99 fresh patches for erecting a fence along the shared borders. A total of 864.48 km of this front remains unfenced, including 174.51 km of 'non-feasible" gap, according to official data. The DG-level border talks were held annually between 1975 and 1992, but they were made bi-annual in 1993, with either side alternatively travelling to the national capitals of New Delhi and Dhaka. The India-Bangladesh border spans across five states — West Bengal (2,217 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Assam (262 km) and Mizoram (318 km). The BSF is designated as the lead security and intelligence-gathering agency for this front. Parliamentary panel urges Jal Shakti Ministry to implement National Water Policy
Agency: Last Updated: August 12, 2025, 00:15 IST Representational image (Image: News18) New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) A parliamentary panel has asked the Ministry of Jal Shakti to urgently implement the long-delayed new National Water Policy, warning that India's water sector is grappling with shrinking per capita availability, deteriorating quality, and low efficiency of water use systems. In its ninth report on action taken by the government on earlier recommendations, the Standing Committee on Water Resources expressed 'paramount concern" over the lack of significant progress on the policy's rollout, despite the draft being ready. '…the Committee urged the Ministry to take necessary decisions in the matter on urgent basis and ensure the implementation of the New National Water Policy on priority so that necessary systems be prepared to confront the current challenges in the Water Sector," the report said. It directed the ministry to ensure the policy is in place within three months to strengthen resilience against scarcity, pollution, and climate-induced disruptions. The committee also raised alarms over the acute staffing shortages in State Dam Safety Organisations (SDSOs), which, it said, could compromise the objectives of the Dam Safety Act, 2021. While the National Dam Safety Authority has held 16 review meetings with states to highlight vacancies, the panel found no clarity on concrete measures taken to address the issue and demanded swift remedial action. On flood management, particularly in the Northeast, the committee reviewed the Brahmaputra Board's plans to prepare and update master plans for 15 sub-basins and 14 major rivers using advanced technology. It stressed that the success of these initiatives would depend on 'rigorous implementation" and called for time-bound action to curb recurring floods and erosion in Assam and neighbouring states. The panel reiterated its recommendation for dedicated financial grants to states and UTs to promote rainwater harvesting, rejecting the ministry's stance that such funding might undermine community-led schemes like 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain' and 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari'. It also noted the absence of clear plans for the repair and maintenance of rainwater harvesting infrastructure. The report said that while several programmes and schemes exist, gaps in policy execution, institutional capacity, and funding continue to hinder India's water security goals. The committee has sought updates on multiple fronts within three months.
