A single-vehicle crash killed two people and seriously injured another in Kansas City's Northland early Saturday, police said.
Officers were called around 1 a.m. to Northeast Cookingham Drive near its intersection with Reinking Road after a Chevrolet Tahoe went off the road and crashed, said Captain Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department. The Tahoe had been speeding east on Cookingham Drive and went off the street at a curve in the roadway, he said.
The SUV went down an embankment, hit a sign and several trees before it caught on fire and was engulfed in flames.
The driver and a passenger who was sitting in the front seat were declared dead at the scene. A passenger who was sitting in a back seat was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, Becchina said.

Police investigate shooting at Northland KC apartment after man dies at hospital

Police are investigating a shooting that killed one man in Kansas City's Cooley Highlands neighborhood Saturday morning. Officers responded just after 11 a.m. to the 3000 block of Northeast 37th Street after a call about the sound of gunfire. While officers were on their way to the scene, they were notified that a man arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds, said Jake Becchina, a Kansas City Police Department spokesman. Hospital staff told police the man was dropped off in a private vehicle and left there by himself. A short time later, the man died at the hospital from his injuries, Becchina said. Police have not yet publicly identified the man. Officers later found evidence that a shooting likely occurred inside an apartment building on 37th Street, Becchina said. Detectives have been canvassing the Northland neighborhood for witnesses and processing the scene for evidence. The killing is Kansas City's 70th homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 67 homicides. Becchina said KCPD is asking for the public's help with information about the shooting. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call homicide unit detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.

Sheriff SUV deal: $52K deal amid budget crises

ST. LOUIS – While threatening to cut essential services, the Sheriff's Office made a deal for a luxury buy in silence. It's a brand-new Chevy Tahoe the St. Louis Sheriff's Office has avoided talking about. FOX 2 found it parked in the city lot on Laclede after obtaining the Sheriff's Office buyer's order saying it costs $52,773. This discovery comes after Sheriff Alfred Montgomery had threatened to stop transporting inmates to the hospital because of money problems. On Monday, Alderwoman Daniela Valazquez told the Sheriff, 'We're in a budget hearing because your department doesn't have enough money to–you're in the red.' Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The Sheriff often blamed the media, at one point saying, 'We can't go by news sources. Their job is entertainment.' Alderman Michael Browning answered, 'I would argue the media's job is to inform.' Aldermen questioned the Sheriff's expenditures at the budget meeting, but they did not know at the time about the Tahoe. FOX 2 has found out the possible reasons for that. We've confirmed it was not obtained through traditional means. We've learned it never went before the capital committee to be approved as an expenditure, and we've also confirmed the Comptroller's Office has not signed off on the agreement to buy it. FOX 2 asked the Sheriff's Office about this vehicle more than a week ago when we first got the tip about it. We also made a Missouri Sunshine request for the documentation, and the office said it would answer Tuesday morning, which turned into Tuesday afternoon, but with no answer. Thursday afternoon, the office texted a statement that said in part that their '…fleet is currently eight vehicles short of its allocated need to perform basic responsibilities…' adding quote '…discretionary funds (are) established for the office under Missouri Law…' FOX 2 also learned the vehicle has yet to be paid for, while the purchase contract is dated January 25—which means that as aldermen were pressing the Sheriff for answers about expenditures—the pricey vehicle was parked in the city lot without budget leaders knowing anything about it.
