Judge Blocks Emotional Distress Evidence in Blake Lively's Case Against Justin Baldoni
Blake Lively's legal battle with Justin Baldoni took a significant turn when a federal judge ruled that her emotional distress claims cannot proceed and barred her from presenting related evidence at trial.
On Tuesday, Judge Lewis Liman ruled that her claims related to emotional distress would not move forward, after Lively's attorneys indicated they would be dropping them. The decision came in response to a motion from Baldoni's legal team, who had pushed the court to compel Lively to release private medical records, including therapy notes.
Judge Lewis Liman denied the motion to compel those records, citing Lively's intent to withdraw the related claims. He wrote, 'The motion to compel … is denied based on Plaintiff's representation that the relevant claims will be withdrawn.' However, the judge also made it clear that if the claims aren't formally dismissed, Lively won't be allowed to submit any evidence related to emotional distress.
The judge also addressed Blake Lively's attempt to have her claims dismissed without prejudice, saying, 'Lively's request that 'because the parties have agreed to dismiss Ms. Lively's tenth and eleventh causes of action…the Court exercise its inherent authority and authority under Rule 15 to dismiss them without prejudice' is denied without prejudice to renewal.' He further instructed both parties to either jointly 'stipulate to whether dismissal is with or without prejudice,' or have Lively submit a formal motion.
Although Justin Baldoni's lawyers did not respond to the ruling, Lively's attorneys, Esra Hudson and Mike Gottlieb, issued a pointed statement. They called Baldoni's motion 'utterly pointless.' They added that while the standalone emotional distress claims are being withdrawn, Lively still plans to seek emotional distress damages through other claims in the lawsuit, such as sexual harassment and retaliation. Alabama execution remains on hold to evaluate whether man is competent
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The scheduled execution of an Alabama Death Row inmate will not go forward next week as the state waits for the completion of a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. A judge last month stayed the Aug. 21 execution of David Lee Roberts until a mental evaluation could be conducted to see if Roberts is competent to be executed. The Alabama Department of Corrections said Friday that the report will not be completed by the scheduled Aug. 21 execution date. 'As a result, the Department anticipates that the execution scheduled for August 21 will not occur on that date. Accordingly, the Department has halted all preparations for Mr. Roberts' currently scheduled execution,' prison system officials wrote in a press release. Roberts, 59, was scheduled to be put to death next week by nitrogen gas, a method Alabama began using last year. He was convicted of killing Annetra Jones in 1992. Attorneys representing Roberts argued that his death sentence should be suspended due to severe mental illness. Roberts has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, hears voices and is delusional, they wrote in a court filing. He also recently attempted to burn tattoos off his arm and leg because he believed they 'are trying to control his thoughts,' his lawyers wrote. In 1992, Roberts was a houseguest at Jones' boyfriend's home in Marion County. Prosecutors said that on the afternoon of April 22, he came to the home, packed his belongings, stole money and shot Jones three times in the head with a .22 caliber rifle while she slept on the couch. He then set the house on fire after dousing Jones' body and the floor with a flammable liquid, prosecutors said. Jurors convicted Roberts of capital murder and voted 7-5 to recommend that he receive life in prison without parole. A judge overrode that and sentenced him to death. Alabama no longer allows judges to override jury sentences in capital cases. Twenty-eight men have died by court-ordered execution so far this year in the United States. At least nine other people across seven states are scheduled to be put to death this year. The number of executions carried out this year exceeds the 25 carried out last year and in 2018. It is the highest total since 2015, when 28 people were put to death.

Gal Gadot says 'pressure' to speak out against Israel hurt 'Snow White' at box office
Gal Gadot is weighing in on the box office failure of "Snow White." The "Wonder Woman" star, 40, discussed the financial disappointment of the Disney live-action remake during a recent appearance on "The A Talks," an Israeli TV show, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Gadot, who was born in Israel and was a combat fitness instructor in the Israel Defense Forces during her mandatory two years of service, theorized the movie's performance was affected by pressure on celebrities to speak out against her home country. Rachel Zegler, who played Snow White in the film opposite Gadot's Evil Queen, was outspoken in her support for Palestine ahead of the movie's release. "There's pressure on celebrities to speak against Israel," said Gadot, speaking in Hebrew, according to a translation published by Variety. "And, you know, it happened. I can always explain and try to give context about what's happening here. And I always do that. But in the end, people make their own decisions. And I was disappointed that the movie was incredibly affected by all of that and that it didn't do well at the box office. But that's how it goes. You win some, you lose some." Despite speculation of bad blood between the two "Snow White" actresses, though, Gadot also said she enjoyed working with Zegler. "We laughed and we talked, we had fun," she said, per The Hollywood Reporter. Gadot added that she was "positive the movie was going to be a huge hit" before its release. But "Snow White" underperformed at the box office in March, earning $87 million in North America. By comparison, Disney's live-action "The Little Mermaid" remake made $298 million at the domestic box office, and the "Lilo & Stitch" remake took in $421 million domestically. After the film's poor performance, Jonah Platt, son of "Snow White" producer Marc Platt, publicly blamed Zegler, who posted "free Palestine" on X in August 2024 after thanking fans for watching the movie's trailer. In a since-deleted Instagram comment, Platt slammed Zegler "for dragging her personal politics into the middle of promoting the movie for which she signed a multi-million dollar contract to get paid and do publicity for." Platt added that the actress' "actions clearly hurt the film's box office." Zegler never directly responded to Platt's claims. But in a June i-D magazine profile, the "West Side Story" star defended voicing support for Palestine and argued that "a platform becomes a responsibility, and that responsibility is ours to use as we please." Zegler noted "there are obviously things that are at stake by being outspoken," but "nothing is worth innocent lives," adding, "My heart doesn't have a fence around it, and if that is considered my downfall? There are worse things." Gadot, meanwhile, told Variety in March that her "conscience is clean" about advocating for hostages of Hamas and speaking out in support of Israel. "I am praying for better days for all," she told the outlet at the time. "I want everybody to have good life and prosperity, and the ability to raise their children in a safe environment."
