The MNS and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) have been at the forefront in opposing the "imposition of Hindi" as a third language for primary classes in schools.
The state government, in the face of mounting opposition to the introduction of Hindi for Classes 1 to 5 in schools, has withdrawn two government orders on the implementation of the three-language policy.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the formation of a committee headed by educationist Narendra Jadhav to suggest the way forward on the language policy.
Talking to reporters, Thackeray said, "People are trying to make the 150 to 200-year-old Hindi language appear superior to Marathi, which has a history of over 3,000 years. This is unacceptable, and I will not allow it."

He questioned the legitimacy of branding Hindi as a national language in a country with such linguistic diversity.
"Hindi is not the rashtra bhasha (national language) to be imposed on other states. This kind of coercion is not right," the MNS chief said.
The Fadnavis government issued a GR on April 16, making Hindi a compulsory third language for students in classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools. Amid backlash, the government issued an amended GR on June 17, making Hindi an optional language.

HC dismisses plea to rescue TN fishermen stranded in Iran
Madurai: Madras high court on Monday dismissed a plea seeking a direction to the Centre and state to take appropriate steps to rescue and ensure the safe return of the fishermen from Tamil Nadu who are stranded in Iran due to the Iran-Israel war. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by an advocate, G Thirumurugan. The petitioner stated that the Centre took steps to bring back several students studying in Iran following the Iran-Israel conflict. At present, there is a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. He stated that several people from Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, and Ramanathapuram are working as fishermen in Iranian fishing trawlers. They were stranded in Iran, and their family members are unable to contact them. Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin recently wrote to the Union minister of external affairs seeking to facilitate the safe return of the Tamil Nadu fishermen stranded in Iran. The airspace in Iran is also open for the fishermen to return to India. If the fishermen have any issues, they could approach the Indian Embassy in Iran. Taking cognisance of the Centre's submissions, a division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete observed that these are affairs to be dealt with by the Union ministry of external affairs. The high court cannot issue any directions. The fishermen are at liberty to approach the Indian Embassy in Iran, the judges observed, and dismissed the petition.

AIMIM likely to form third front in poll-bound Bihar
PATNA: Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) said that it would form third front ahead of Bihar assembly elections in the absence of a positive response from the Opposition INDIA bloc on alignment with AIMIM. AIMIM state president Akhtarul Iman said that he was hopeful of positive response from INDIA bloc on alignment with AIMIM to defeat the BJP-led NDA in state assembly elections. 'Discussions were held on the matter, but there is no further development,' he told the media. However, he asserted that the INDIA bloc would not be able to dethrone the NDA in Bihar if the division of secular votes was not stopped. 'A stronger alliance is required to defeat NDA in the upcoming assembly elections in the State,' the AIMIM state president said. In response to a media query, he said that AIMIM was not invited to the meeting of the INDIA bloc subcommittee held in the state capital on June 30 to discuss the release of a common election manifesto.
