Harris Dickinson cast as 'iconic' lead in Pride and Prejudice adaptation

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

BAFTA-nominated actor Harris Dickinson will take on the role of Mr. Darcy as part of Audible's audio adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, as part of Jane Austen's 250th birthday celebrations
Harris Dickinson, who reached heartthrob status after starring in Babygirl alongside Nicole Kidman, has officially been tapped to take on the iconic role of Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy. Fans of the rising star actor may be disappointed to learn, however, that the role is audio-only as part of Audible's audio adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
Still, the project promises to be packed with incredible vocal performances as Dickinson is set to be in the booth alongside BAFTA-winning actress and Industry star Marisa Abela, who will portray the incomparable Elizabeth Bennet.

The English-language cast also includes Glenn Close as Lady Catherine De Bourgh, Bill Nighy and Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Mr and Mrs Bennet, Jessie Buckley as Caroline Bingley, Toheeb Jimoh as Mr Bingley, and Sophie Wilde as Jane. Black Mirror alum Will Poulter is also cast as Mr Wickham.

Dickinson shared that the project has been particularly rewarding. 'Playing Mr. Darcy was an amazing experience. I've always known him as this iconic character, but getting to really dive into the novel through this process gave me a whole new appreciation for him and the world. Being part of such a talented cast made it even better. It's a real privilege to be part of something so timeless."
Audible's English-language adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will be released in the U.S., U.K., Canada, India and Australia on September 9, 2025. The release leads up to the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birthday (December 16, 1775).
As stated in Audible's press release announcing the project, the adaptation will remain 'faithful to the original text' while also adding a 'unique interior perspective' from Elizabeth Bennet. Audible's Pride and Prejudice has been adapted from the original by award-winning writer Lulu Raczka and directed by Dionne Edwards, marking her audio drama directorial debut.
Additionally, the English-language version will be followed up by local versions in Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. The subsequent language versions will include 'local casts and release dates' according to Audible.

News of this major production from Audible comes less than a month after the company announced it will offer publishers comprehensive AI production services to produce audiobooks. A shift that has been criticised by both voice actors and translators.
The company shared in mid-May that it will work with publishers to produce audiobooks using its new 'fully integrated, end-to-end AI production technology '.

Voice actor Jade Asha recently shared her thoughts on Audible AI narration plan with The Mirror, saying that since the rise of AI, many of her work opportunities have 'almost disappeared'. But quality is at stake, according to Asha: 'We know that AI is lower in cost than hiring a voiceover artist, but it lacks in quality."
Still, Asha says AI-generated voices are improving quickly and that the Audible announcement doesn't bode well for those in her industry. 'I can only see AI leading to less work for voiceover artists, which is already an over-saturated industry since the pandemic."
Asha's story and the threat to voice actors and narrators is only one aspect of publishing that Audible's AI services will infiltrate. The company will also begin rolling out AI translation in beta later in 2025.

Benidorm's Crissy Rock sets record straight on claim she's 'living like a nomad'

Benidorm star Crissy Rock has set the record straight on reports that she is 'living like a nomad' and couch-surfing with friends. The Liverpudlian, 66, is best known as Janey Yorke from the ITV sitcom, but is now touring the country talking about her transition from acting to stand-up in the show An Evening with Crissy Rock: From Bedlam to Benidorm. Crissy made headlines over the weekend that she is 'living from couch to couch' and that her wardrobe is the boot of her car – which she has told the Metro she said in jest during an interview. Crissy has now clarified that she does have a permanent home in Norfolk, which she shares with her husband Julian Buck, who she married the same year Benidorm ended in 2018. Crissy went on to explain that the nomadic lifestyle she referred to in an interview with The Express was only temporary while she's on tour, driving herself from city to city to perform her one-woman show, which she said is 'part and parcel' of being a jobbing comedian. The performer explained that while at first she found the reaction funny, she then realised that it 'could have an impact on her tour' if people make the wrong assumption about her living situation. 'I did say that my boot of my car is like a wardrobe, because when you're on tour, you have to take suitcases with you. I am like a nomad because I'm on tour. I'm up and down the country, all over the place. 'That's what you do when you're on tour, you live in the suitcase. We don't live in a cardboard box.' She continued: 'You have to go where the work is, so it's not like you just sit there and go, 'Oh, I can't be bothered going there'.' Crissy has her next show on Thursday, in which she talks about her life since Benidorm ended. The sitcom ran for 10 seasons and 74 episodes before its finale in 2018. Benidorm focused on the Solana Resort, following various holidaymakers as they decamped to the Spanish city, and has since found a second life on Netflix. Benidorm boss Derren Litten confirmed earlier this year that he is in talks with ITV over a possible show reboot, which Crissy said would be 'fabulous' if it went ahead. 'That would be wonderful for the people who watch it as well,' she said. 'It'd be wonderful if they asked me to come back into it. Maybe me and Sherrie (Hewson, who played Joyce Temple-Savage on the sitcom) could lock horns and become rival manageresses of different parts of the venue.' More Trending Crissy went on to acknowledge that certain elements of the show would have to change, after it featured outdated stereotypes and crude jokes. 'You couldn't say certain things that they said years ago,' said Crissy. 'I'm not the writer, so I wouldn't know how they would go about it. 'People spoke like that years ago, but you wouldn't do it now.' View More » Benidorm is available to stream on Netflix and ITVX. Got a story? France 24's Spanish-language TV news was airing live from Bogota, Colombia, when a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck on Sunday morning. 5 Helena Lozano, right, was speaking to a correspondent when the earthquake hit Credit: NX 5 The France24 presenter remained calm - even as she realised the quake was more than a slight tremor Credit: NX 5 Entire buildings collapsed when the magnitude 6.5 quake shook their foundations Credit: AFP Presenter Helena Lozano was in the studio, wrapping up a report from a correspondent in Beirut, when the building began shaking. The screen behind the desk wavered around and the camera footage wobbled unsteadily. Lozano puts her hands on the table to steady herself, but doesn't miss a beat. At first, she described the disruption as a "slight tremor" - before quickly realising the quake was more intense. She said: "We are currently witnessing a slight tremor in the France 24 studios." Then, moments later, she admitted: "It's not slight, it's quite strong. "The studio lights and cameras are shaking. We urge everyone to remain calm. We will return shortly." Despite the obvious danger, Lozano carried on speaking clearly and professionally - even having the composure to advise people to evacuate if necessary. The clip went viral on social media, with many praising her guts for keeping a cool head. One impressed viewer wrote on X: "How calm and professional the presenter is - I almost died of fright at home." The quake's epicentre was located about 150km from Bogota, and just 10km beneath the surface, which made its effects more violent. Tremors were felt widely across central Colombia and reportedly left four people injured after striking just after 8am local time. The capital was spun into panic by the tectonic shudders, with sirens blaring around the city and locals fleeing their homes out onto the street. 5 The walls of this lean-to-style building were decimated by the quake Credit: AFP 5 Aerial view of the damage caused in the town of Paratebueno outside Bogota Credit: AFP It was one of the strongest quakes the country has seen in years - and was followed up by a 4.0 magnitude aftershock 12 minutes later. Large areas of shanty neighbourhoods were razed to the ground, with ramshackle homes left crumpled in piles. Pictures emerged of huge paving slabs which had split and buckled under the enormous force in Bogota. The last time Colombia was rocked by an earthquake stronger than this was 2016, when a 7.8 magnitude killed almost 700 people. And in 1999, almost 2,000 were wiped out by a 6.1 magnitude quake.

Wrath of Becky had its premiere at the 2023 SXSW festival, debuting to positive reviews and an 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating. It's coming to Netflix in the UK on Friday, and for those who want to watch the first film before diving in, they can do so right now on Prime Video. It sits higher on the review aggregator than Becky, which holds a 72% score. In their review, AWFJ dubbed the film 'delightfully violent', adding that it is 'very silly and a whole lot of fun.' 'The Wrath of Becky delivers satisfying action, as this underestimated heroine makes some terrible people look like absolute fools,' the Los Angeles Times said in their review. added: 'There's a charming simplicity to a genre film that can be introduced as 'Let's just kill some fascists!' and Angel & Coote know how to pace and deliver this kind of gut punch of a movie.' Similarly, Bloody Disgusting wrote: 'Angel and Coote's playful tonal shift becomes instrumental in the sequel's success as an entertaining action-horror-comedy romp, and Wilson is more than game in taking Becky less seriously. It makes for an irreverently delightful time.' The Austin Chronicle surmised that Wrath of Becky is a 'bloody good time,' while Film Inquiry said it was 'playful but brutal.' Speaking to Screen Rant, Ouija: Origin of Evil star Wilson recalled the 'extremely exciting' moment she learned a sequel to Becky was happening. 'I remember wrapping the first Becky and people being like, 'Oh, it's time for a sequel,' and it felt just like bulls**t to me at the time. It was like, 'You're just saying that',' she said. More Trending But when I actually got the call being like, 'Are you down to make the sequel?' it was incredibly exciting. 'Of course, I was so down to do that, Becky's one of my favorite characters I've ever had the pleasure of playing, and I couldn't wait to see where we could take her. 'I knew that everyone involved creatively would really hear me out on my ideas, and they so did, and it was an incredible opportunity. I had a fantastic time on set, and now it's coming out and it's unbelievable.' Wrath of Becky is streaming from Friday on Netflix. Got a story?
