Madrasi camp demolition: 'Court ordered removal of this slum, no one can defy court orders', says Delhi CM Rekha Gupta; cites flood prevention as key reason

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday clarified that the demolition drive at Madrasi Camp in Jangpura was carried out strictly in accordance with court orders, which had directed the slum's removal four times to facilitate cleaning of the Barapulla drain and prevent future flooding.
While talking to the reporters, CM Rekha said, "I have clearly said, that if the court has ordered something, neither the government, nor the administration can do anything about it."
'The truth about the demolition of Madrasi Camp is that it was set up on the banks of the Barapullah drain. The court had ordered the removal of this slum four times so that machines could be deployed to clean the drain. Otherwise, 2023-like floods would be seen again in Delhi.
No one can defy court orders. Residents of that camp have been allotted houses and shifted there,' CM Rekha Gupta further added.
The chief minister also mentioned similar anti-encroachment actions had been carried out elsewhere, including Railway Colony. She criticised Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for politicising the matter and questioned who would be held accountable in case of any fatalities due to flooding.
'Action was taken in three places in Delhi, including Railway Colony, a slum set up near the railway tracks. The railways took action. Who would be held accountable if there is a loss of life? Should Saurabh Bharadwaj, Atishi, or Arvind Kejriwal be held accountable? The court knows what it is doing and hence has given orders,' she said.
Gupta further added that the BJP-led Delhi government was focused on development and claimed that Rs 700 crore worth of work was being undertaken across the capital something that, she said, was never done by the previous Kejriwal or Congress governments.
The remarks came after AAP leader and Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition Atishi launched a sharp criticism of the BJP following the demolition drive on 1 June. In a social media post on 4 June, Atishi accused the BJP of betraying slum dwellers.
'BJP had promised 'jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan' (where there is a slum, there will be a house), but as soon as it won the election, it bulldozed the Madrasi camp,' she posted on X.
'Today, when I went there, women, elderly, youth – everyone cried bitterly.
They were saying that they made a mistake by voting for the BJP. If Kejriwal were here, he would not have let our slums be demolished,' she added.
The demolition was part of a court-ordered operation to widen the Barapullah drain, which gets clogged during heavy rains, leading to severe waterlogging. Officials said 370 encroachments were removed during the drive. Of those affected, 189 people were found eligible and given flats in Narela, while 181 were deemed ineligible for resettlement.

Stadium stampede: Ktk Opposition Leader demands Special Assembly Session, Rs 1 Cr Compensation

Bengaluru, June 8 (UNI) Karnataka Opposition Leader R Ashok on Sunday demanded a special session of the Assembly to deliberate on the Chinnaswamy stadium stampede. Addressing a press conference here, Ashok said the House should also discuss the Congress-led government's failures that cost 11 lives ahead of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations on Wednesday. 'Three separate inquiries have been ordered – which one is genuine? We demand a judicial probe headed by a sitting High Court judge,' he insisted. Ashok also called for enhanced compensation for the victims' families. 'If the government is truly not at fault, it should give Rs 1 crore per family. As opposition leaders, we will contribute our one month's salary to the families,' he announced. Dismissing the justification for such a grand event, Ashok added, 'Winning a trophy is not new. Other states have won before. But no other CM has ever used such events for cheap publicity.' He accused the state government of flouting police instructions and thereby breaking the law, which led to the stampede. Ashok alleged that the tragedy could have been averted had Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar not been engrossed in a power tussle. 'Instead of mourning the loss of innocent students, they were chasing a trophy. The police had informed the government of a casualty by noon, and yet the programme went on even after eight children had died. This shows how stone-hearted the government is,' he charged. Ashok cited a letter dated June 4, from the Vidhana Soudha police to the Chief Secretary, warning that the programme was being hastily organised, with inadequate staff and serious security concerns. The letter had recommended cancelling the event, yet the government proceeded, he alleged. He further stated that police had clearly instructed against the participation of department staff and their families, but the directive was ignored. 'CCTV deployment was skipped, drones were flown despite prohibition, and the stage – which was to accommodate only 20–30 people – ended up hosting over 200, including 11 players,' he said. Ashok pointed out that while the event was officially listed as a government function, CM Siddaramaiah later disowned it, claiming it was not a government-organised event. 'This doublespeak is unacceptable,' he said. UNI BDN SSP

Constitutional bodies ‘hijacked' under Modi Government, alleges Tejashwi Yadav

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday (June 8, 2025) charged the Narendra Modi government with 'hijacking' constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission and alleged that the ruling BJP becomes aware of poll schedules even before the dates are announced. The former deputy Chief Minister also claimed that the last state Assembly polls held in 2020 were not held fairly and backed doubts raised by Rahul Gandhi of alliance partner Congress over Maharashtra elections. 'One cannot deny the fact that all constitutional bodies have been hijacked ever since the Narendra Modi-led NDA came to power in 2014 at the Centre. It's quite surprising that BJP's IT Cell comes to know the dates of elections before the ECI announces them. We are keeping an eye on the developments,' Mr. Yadav told reporters in Patna. Constitutional institutions need to function independently, he said wondering how people would expect justice if they were influenced. 'People know what happened in the 2020 assembly polls in the State. We were supposed to form the government. The ECI did three press conferences to justify why counting was stopped in the evening. But why did it resume at night? Those Mahagathbandhan candidates who were declared winners were later announced as losers,' the RJD leader said. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently alleged rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra election, which was won by a BJP-led alliance. In an article, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha had alleged 'match-fixing' in the Maharashtra polls and claimed that it would next happen in the Bihar elections and 'anywhere the BJP is losing'. The EC rejected the allegation.

Live Events Protests were held across Manipur on Saturday night over the arrests of leaders of the Meitei organisation, prompting the administration to impose prohibitory orders and suspend internet services in five Imphal valley districts. Ibomcha, the Lamlai constituency legislator, said, "During the meeting, we were informed that five people were arrested, and of them, one Kanan Singh, was arrested by the CBI in connection with a case. We appreciate the roles the Arambai Tenggol have taken during the recent flood. Kanan is not arrested by the Manipur Police but by the CBI in connection with one of the cases." The CBI is investigating the Manipur violence cases as per the direction of the Supreme Court, the central agency said in a statement. The trial of the Manipur violence cases has been shifted to Assam 's Guwahati in view of the law and order situation in the state. "The CBI has arrested a member of Arambai Tenggol at Imphal Airport on June 8. He was involved in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023. The four others were arrested by the state police for allegedly being associated with Kanan. They did not have any CBI-related cases. They will be screened if they were involved in any other illegal activities." Congress legislator Th Lokeshwar told reporters, "Kanan was arrested in connection with a case being investigated by CBI and was not picked up for being a member of Arambai Tenggol. We urged the authorities concerned to release the five without any conditions. On the contrary, we requested them to arrest the then home minister, then DGP and other authorities of the then government." More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. Following the arrest of Kanan, his wife Asem Guni told reporters that her husband had joined the "public defence effort at the onset of the ongoing ethnic conflict to protect the state and its territorial integrity".
