Muscat: In line with its commitment to advancing the Islamic finance sector, Bank Nizwa, the leading and most trusted Islamic bank in the Sultanate of Oman, continues to play a strategic role in supporting national initiatives that empower Omani talent and contribute to sustainable development. Furthering this vision, Bank Nizwa has announced its support for the Professional Diploma in Waqf Leadership Preparation program, implemented by Tawafuq Islamic Financial Consultancy, in partnership with the College of Sharia Sciences as the knowledge partner, and with Bank Nizwa serving as the key banking partner. This pioneering collaboration reflects a powerful integration between knowledge-based, financial, and community welfare institutions, aimed at preparing a new generation of qualified national leaders in the Waqf sector. The initiative reinforces the sector's vital role in driving economic growth and supporting the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
This program is the first professional diploma in the Sultanate specialized in preparing leaders for the Waqf sector. It aims to develop national competencies capable of driving a qualitative transformation in endowment management by shifting from traditional approaches to an integrated institutional model that combines Islamic knowledge with best practices in administration and finance. The program focuses on empowering participants to design sustainable development strategies and establish effective oversight and governance systems, thereby strengthening their readiness to take on leadership roles in the endowment sector at both local and regional levels. In addition, it contributes to enhancing the operational efficiency of endowment institutions, enabling them to better achieve their developmental and social objectives in alignment with national priorities.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Khaled Al Kayed, Chief Executive Officer at Bank Nizwa, said: 'We are honoured to support this pioneering diploma program, which aims to equip future leaders with the skills and knowledge required to manage endowments effectively and in line with modern institutional standards. Our involvement reflects Bank Nizwa's ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs to help strengthen the foundation of the Waqf sector. We believe that empowering the endowment sector through institutional development is essential to achieving long-term sustainability. At Bank Nizwa, we remain deeply committed to initiatives that elevate sector performance and contribute to the national development agenda, in full alignment with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.'
Dr. Mohammed Omar Al-Khalaf, Executive Director of Tawafuq for Islamic Financial Consultations stated: 'the launch of this program marks a significant milestone in strategic collaboration between Tawafuq, College of Sharia Sciences and Bank Nizwa. This partnership sets the stage for broader cooperation in delivering impactful initiatives in the future. The professional diploma is designed to empower and equip current and aspiring leaders in the endowment sector with the skills and knowledge required to take on senior leadership roles. This initiative also reflects the government's strategic vision, as championed by the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, to develop and modernize the endowment sector. It aligns with national priorities and the broader Sustainable Development Goals set forth in Oman Vision 2040.'
The program spans five weeks as a part-time study track and comprises 100 training hours, integrating in-person lectures, practical applications, and a hands-on graduation project. It is delivered by Dr. Mohammed Fakhri Suwaileh, an international expert in Islamic banking and endowment management. All sessions are conducted at the College of Sharia Sciences in Muscat.
The program offers a comprehensive and integrated training experience, covering a wide range of key topics such as the jurisprudential and legal foundations of endowments, contemporary approaches to endowment investment, governance and compliance frameworks, and risk management in the endowment sector. Additional areas of focus include performance measurement for endowment institutions, endowment accounting, and Sharia auditing of endowments and their investments. Moreover, the program emphasizes the development of modern leadership competencies and strategic planning skills, enhancing participants' readiness to take on leadership roles within endowment institutions and empowering them to drive sustainable impact in this vital sector.
The program targets a broad and diverse audience, including employees of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, leaders and board members of endowment and charitable institutions, and fatwa secretaries and staff from the Office of the Grand Mufti. It also caters to professionals from Islamic banks and financial institutions, as well as academics and researchers specializing in Sharia, endowments, and law. In addition, the program is designed for entrepreneurs and initiators seeking to establish private endowments or develop endowment-based projects, as well as individuals interested in enhancing their capabilities in charitable and social work.
Bank Nizwa's support for such initiatives reflects its commitment to advancing the role of Islamic banking in community development by contributing to the growth of the Waqf sector and empowering it to fulfill its role in supporting social initiatives and creating a positive, lasting impact on people's lives.

Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio to Launch 830 Million New Leones (€34 Million) Solar Minigrid Project, Powering Sierra Leone's Green Future

In a landmark step toward sustainable development and inclusive energy access, His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio is set to officially launch the Salone Off-grid Renewable Energy Acceleration Initiative (SOGREA), a €34 million (approximately 830 million New Leones) solar minigrid project that will significantly advance Sierra Leone's green energy future. Hosted by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), the initiative is a collaborative effort between the Government of Sierra Leone, the European Union (EU), and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). SOGREA aims to increase energy access in rural communities across the country by 2027, deploying at least 5.2 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar generation capacity through the installation of minigrids. The project is set to benefit 25,000 households and 2,800 businesses across approximately 60 communities, offering them reliable, clean, and affordable electricity for the first time. To brief the President on the status and next steps of the project, EU Ambassador Jacek Jankowski, accompanied by Dr. Kandeh Yumkella and other private sector partners, visited State House today. The high-level delegation engaged President Bio on the technical, regulatory, and financial readiness of the initiative, and reaffirmed their collective commitment to ensuring its success. Speaking during the meeting, President Bio expressed deep appreciation to the EU for their steadfast partnership and support in fulfilling his administration's promise of inclusive development across Sierra Leone. 'Taking energy to the people is key,' the President emphasized. 'This project is a significant milestone. It demonstrates mutual trust and confidence with our partners, especially at a time when development assistance is dwindling globally. This shows we still enjoy goodwill.' He further assured the visitors of his government's commitment to building the necessary legal and regulatory frameworks: 'I am aware of the revised regulations for the Sierra Leone Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (SLEWRC), and my government will ensure Parliament sets the required legal framework to support implementation.' The President added, 'Together, we will make electricity accessible to all and no one will be left behind.' At the heart of SOGREA's success is its catalytic investment model, which blends public and private sector support to create a sustainable ecosystem for minigrid development. Energy Sector lead, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, a driving force behind the initiative, explained that over the last two years, critical groundwork has been laid, including the revision of existing regulations under the EWRC Act and the design of investment incentives to attract private developers. He confirmed that implementation agreements have been signed and that President Bio will officially launch the project. Ambassador Jacek Jankowski, Head of the EU Delegation to Sierra Leone, underscored the importance of the initiative as a major milestone in the country's pursuit of clean energy and rural transformation. 'We are proud to support a project of this magnitude,' he said. 'The EU's total investment stands at €34 million, including €22 million in direct investment support and technical assistance, while the Government of Sierra Leone is contributing 50 million Leones.' The project was developed in partnership with UNOPS, with a focus on enabling private sector entities to develop, finance, own, and operate solar minigrids. Ambassador Jankowski noted that the investment model includes reimbursement schemes, leveraging of additional financing, and regulatory mechanisms to bridge the gap between tariffs and what rural communities can afford. He highlighted the strategic involvement of key institutions such as SLEWRC and the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit, which will guide implementation and ensure long-term regulatory stability. Beyond powering homes and businesses, the SOGREA initiative is expected to create jobs, stimulate local economies, and empower women and youth, particularly in off-grid and underserved regions. By supporting President Bio's 'Big Five Game Changers', especially in technology and innovation, the initiative reinforces Sierra Leone's commitment to becoming a hub for green investment and renewable energy development in West Africa. As the country moves steadily toward universal electricity access, the launch of SOGREA marks a defining moment in Sierra Leone's journey toward climate resilience and inclusive growth. With strong international partnerships and a forward-looking energy policy, Sierra Leone is lighting the path to a sustainable, empowered future, one solar grid at a time. King Abdullah II leads tributes as Jordan celebrate historic World Cup qualification

Ali Olwan nets hat-trick in 3-0 win over Oman to seal place at 2026 tournament in US, Canada and Mexico Jordan's King Abdullah II led the tributes as his nation celebrated reaching the Fifa World Cup for the first time in their history. Ali Olwan was the hero for the Jordanians as he netted a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Oman in Muscat on Thursday night. The jubilant away supporters were joined by Crown Prince Hussein, who was seen celebrating in the stands. The win put the 2023 Asian Cup runners-up into a commanding position to secure a top-two finish in AFC qualifying Group B behind leaders South Korea, and their progress was confirmed a few hours later when the Koreans beat Iraq 2-0 in Basra. Jordan's King Abdullah II congratulated the team on social media. 'This historic qualification is well-deserved by our team, which includes stars and cadres of whom we are proud,' he wrote on X. 'Special thanks go to our loyal fans who have been our support and encouragement.' Jordan's qualification for the expanded 48-team tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico extends a rewarding period for the national team after their run to the Asian Cup final in 2023. In that competition they eliminated South Korea in the last four before eventually losing to hosts Qatar in the final. The South Koreans cemented top spot in AFC Group B and consigned Iraq to another round of qualifying with a routine victory at the Basra International Stadium. The Iraqi cause was not helped by a first-half red card for Ipswich striker Ali Al Hamadi and goals after the break from Kim Jin-gyu and Oh Hyeon-gyu confirmed their defeat. The Iraqis will drop into the fourth round of qualifying where they will be joined by either Palestine or Oman who meet next week in a winner-takes-all clash. Palestine kept their hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Kuwait on Thursday thanks to goals from Tamer Seyam and Wessam Abou Ali. The six teams who finish third and fourth across the three AFC groups will enter a fresh phase of qualifying featuring two groups of three with the winners of each section sealing a place at the finals. Four of the six teams – UAE, Qatar, Indonesia and Iraq – are already known, with most likely Saudi Arabia and one of Palestine and Oman to complete the line up. Saudi Arabia alive but face steep task Saudi Arabia and Australia will go head-to-head next Tuesday for the second automatic spot in Group C. Australia remain in pole position following their last-gasp win against group leaders Japan in Perth. Defender Aziz Behich was the home hero in front of more than 57,000 fans, rifling into the corner in the 90th minute to give Tony Popovic's side a crucial 1-0 victory. 'We know there's room to grow and room to improve, but we've done something special tonight,' said Popovic, who saw his team outplayed for long periods by an experimental Japan side. Saudi Arabia ensured the race for second place will go down to the wire courtesy of a 2-0 win against Bahrain in Riffa. Goals in either half from Musab Al Juwayr and Abdulrahman Al Obud saw Herve Renard's men stay three points behind second-placed Australia. However, the Saudis will have to win in Jeddah by five goals to leapfrog the Socceroos. Popovic, who replaced Graham Arnold in the dugout in September, added: 'We've all played a part in getting us to this point. We want to go to Saudi Arabia and really finish the job off.' Also in Group C, Patrick Kluivert's Indonesia kept alive their hopes of reaching a first World Cup since the country's independence in 1945 with a 1-0 win over China. That leaves Indonesia fourth in the group, one point behind Saudi. Ole Romeny scored the only goal, his controversial penalty just before half time following a VAR check leaving China rooted to the bottom of the group and thus ending their hopes of making a second World Cup. In Group A, Iran and Uzbekistan confirmed qualification while the UAE and Qatar will move into the next round of qualifying.
