Las Vegas Grand Prix extended through 2027 after a roller-coaster start

The Las Vegas Grand Prix received a two-year contract extension that keeps the race that runs down the iconic Strip on the calendar through 2027.
Las Vegas was added to the F1 schedule in 2023 on a three-year contract but with commitment from casino partners and a 10-year approval from Clark County for the race to take place along the Strip.
Las Vegas was on the 2026 calendar announced earlier this week even though the extension wasn't revealed until Saturday at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Emily Prazer, the president of the Las Vegas Grand Prix and chief commercial officer of F1, said the plans are to extend the race long into the future.
'We want to make sure that we're continuing to evolve what we're doing. But the intent is a much longer-term arrangement," Prazer said. 'As we all know, the race has had its challenges, but we're coming out the other side. So we want to make sure that it continues to work for both sides."
Las Vegas has had a roller-coaster start to its F1 presence as the inaugural race was bogged down by high ticket and hotel prices, then a loose water valve cover that damaged Carlos Sainz's Jr. car in the first practice. The valve cover caused a lengthy delay for track inspection and fans were forced to exit the venue ahead of second practice, which ran until 4 a.m.
In the end, the race was one of the best of the season.
Ticket prices were lowered for 2024 and hotel rates dropped, and ahead of this November's race, the start time has been moved from its previous slot of 10 p.m. on Saturday to 8 p.m.
The race holds a spot on the calendar the week before Thanksgiving and city officials credit the Grand Prix for boosting one of its weakest commercial periods into a money-generating week. November, traditionally one of Las Vegas' weakest months, last year had its most commercially successful month in city history.
Figures released this year said the 2024 event generated $934 million in revenue with $45 million raised in taxes.

Oilers come out flat again, lose Game 5 of Stanley Cup Final to the Panthers
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Again the Edmonton Oilers came out flat against the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final, and the result has them on the brink of losing to them for a second year in a row. The Oilers gave up the first two goals early, eventually fell behind by three and lost Game 5 on home ice Saturday night 5-2. They've been outscored 11-4 in the first period during the final. 'Well if I knew, I'd address it,' said defenseman Mattias Ekholm, who was burned on Brad Marchand's opening goal nine minutes in. 'They're a good team over there. We're a good team. We just have to make sure we bear down early on in games. It hasn't happened for us, and obviously we need to go down to Florida and win a game.' Game 6 is Tuesday night in Sunrise. The Oilers went into Game 5 favored to take the lead and win the series, but they instead got outskated and outplayed by the defending champs. Coach Kris Knoblauch didn't hate his team's start, just what followed. 'I thought we got off to a great start,' Knoblauch said. 'We won a faceoff and it led to a goal against. It's tough tonight. Like two of the goals against, we won the draws and they go down and score immediately. That's tough. Rather than being on the attack, having the puck, getting in on the forecheck at least should happen, and what turns out is we're picking the puck out of our net.' Knoblauch would not commit to a starter in net for Game 6 after Calvin Pickard allowed four goals on 18 shots. 'From what I saw, I think Picks didn't have much chance on all those goals,' Knoblauch said. 'Breakaways, shots through screens, slot shots. There was nothing saying that it was a poor performance.' It was not Edmonton's best, which seemed a bit surprising after rallying from a 3-0 deficit to win Game 4 in overtime. The response from Thursday night was not there this time around, possibly the result of expending so much energy coming back all series. 'Chasing the game over and over against a team like this, it's very difficult,' said Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the Oilers' longest-tenured player. 'It was a tight-checking game all the way through. They took advantage of some opportunities, and at the end of the day we didn't and it ends up being a difference.' The power play of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, Corey Perry and Evan Bouchard went 0 for 3. Even with the penalty kill keeping Florida off the board, not capitalizing on those chances proved costly. 'We had some looks, for sure, but maybe find a way to generate some second, third looks quickly,' Nugent-Hopkins said. Shohei Ohtani hits 2 homers against Giants, ending the Dodgers star's 10-game homer drought
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani has hit two homers against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night, emphatically ending the three-time MVP's longest homer drought since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani led off the game with his 24th homer, hammering Landen Roupp's fourth pitch 419 feet deep into the right-field bleachers with an exit velocity of 110.3 mph. The slugger had been in a 10-game homer drought since June 2, going 10 for 40 in that stretch with no RBIs — although he still had an eight-game hitting streak during his power outage. Ohtani then led off the sixth with his 25th homer, sending Tristan Beck's breaking ball outside the strike zone into the bleachers in right. He also moved one homer behind the Yankees' Aaron Judge and Seattle's Cal Raleigh for the overall major league lead. Dodgers fans brought him home with a standing ovation as Ohtani produced his third multihomer game of the season and the 22nd of his career. Ohtani reached base four times and scored three runs in his first four at-bats, drawing two walks to go with his two homers. Prince Owusu scores twice, Montreal snaps 5-game winless skid by beating Dynamo 3-1
HOUSTON (AP) — Prince Owusu scored two goals in a three-minute span, Jalen Neal added his first goal of the Major League Soccer season and CF Montreal beat the Houston Dynamo 3-1 on Saturday night. Montreal (2-11-5) snapped a five-game winless streak during which the club was outscored 16-6. Owusu nearly lost the ball while fighting off a defender near the penalty spot before he rolled a left-footer into the net in the 30th minute. Then, on the counterattack in the 32nd, Owusu slipped in front of defender Femi Awodesu and went up high for a header — off an arcing entry played in by Aleksandr Guboglo, the 18-year-old's first assist in MLS — from the centre of the area that made it 2-0. Neal made it 3-0 in the 54th minute. Tom Pearce played a free kick from near the right sideline to the back post, where Neal fought off a defender and then scored on a header from the edge of the six-yard box.
