Kolkata law college rape case: CCTV footage corroborates victim's account, SIT expanded to 9 members
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Kolkata law college rape case has been expanded from five to nine members to expedite the investigation, police officers confirmed Sunday. The move comes as investigators make significant progress, with collected CCTV footage reportedly corroborating the statement of the first-year student of the law college who was allegedly raped on June 25 in the security guard's room on the campus.
Police sources revealed that more than seven and a half hours of CCTV footage from the college's external gate and premises have been collected and meticulously examined. 'Yes, the CCTV footage… also corroborates the victim's statement,' a senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Indian Express, specifically referring to the complainant's claim that she was prevented from leaving the college.
So far, four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape: a contractual staffer and former student of the college, Monojit Mishra, 31; and two students, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20; and a security guard of the college, Pinaki Banerjee.
All four arrested were visible in the CCTV footage obtained by the police from the day of the alleged rape, confirming their presence at the scene, as per the police. The SIT has already applied for the confidential statements of the survivor and her parents.
Bidisha Kalita, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jadavpur Division, Kolkata, along with Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Suburbs), who leads the SIT, visited the crime scene on Sunday and began an examination.
Investigators have compiled a list of all those who visited the college on June 25, based on CCTV footage and witness statements. All those on this list will be questioned, with some already summoned by the police. The survivor's parents are also expected to record their confidential statements before a magistrate.
A crucial development in the investigation was the reconstruction of the crime scene on Saturday for over two hours in the presence of the survivor.

Winnipeg police said in a statement on Wednesday that bystanders in the area stopped the attack after which suspects quickly fled after stabbing and robbing the victim of her property. 'The victim was stabbed and robbed of her cell phone. During the assault, she was able to disarm the suspect and held onto the knife, while they continued to assault her. Bystanders intervened and called 911 and the suspects ran off,' the police said, adding the woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Muzaffarnagar court clears last accused in double murder during 2013 riots
Agra: A court in Muzaffarnagar has acquitted the last accused in a double murder case linked to the 2013 communal riots after the key witness turned hostile and no substantial evidence was found against him. Binu Singh, 46, faced trial for the killing of Sarajo, 35, and a 13-year-old boy, who were allegedly set ablaze by a mob led by him in Lank village, Shamli district, on Sept 8, 2013. The original complaint by the boy's father, Iqbal, said that a mob, led by Singh, used weapons and petrol bombs to assault members of the minority community. Iqbal's mother, Ramzano, was also critically injured. Singh was charged under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with a deadly weapon), 302 (murder), 149 (unlawful assembly), 326 (grievous hurt by dangerous weapons), 436 (mischief by fire to destroy a house), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC. Ten others were arrested initially and tried together before they were acquitted in 2016 due to lack of evidence. Singh, who was absconding at the time, surrendered later and faced a separate trial. Iqbal turned hostile in court, leading to Singh's acquittal. Defence lawyer Pradeep Kumar Malik said, "The court found no substantial evidence to convict my client." Singh's acquittal added to a series of similar verdicts in riot-related cases in recent months. In April, a fast-track court in Muzaffarnagar cleared 16 men of murder charges from the 2013 riots, citing lack of credible evidence. In May, another court acquitted 11 residents of Lisarh village in Shamli accused of looting and arson, after witnesses turned hostile and the prosecution failed to establish its case. In the separate May case, Kamruddin and his family fled their home in Lisarh village after it was allegedly looted and set on fire. He filed a complaint on Sept 9, 2013, at Phugana police station, and the SIT filed a chargesheet under section 436 of IPC, among others, against 11 accused. The court eventually cleared all of them. The 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots left over 60 people dead and more than 50,000 displaced. The violence began with the killing of Shahnawaz, 25, in Kawal village on Aug 27, 2013. He was allegedly stabbed by eight men. A mob then lynched two of the alleged attackers — cousins Sachin and Gaurav — triggering a wave of communal violence. As per official records, police registered 510 cases of violence, murder and rape. A total of 1,480 people from both communities were arrested. Police filed charge sheets in 175 cases, while 335 cases were closed. Only three cases, including the Kawal killings that sparked the riots, have led to convictions.

Honeymoon Murder Case: Couple's Jewellery Recovered From Madhya Pradesh
New Delhi: The jewellery that Indore couple Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam took to their honeymoon in Meghalaya has been recovered by the police from Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam. A special investigation team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police has been working on the case in Madhya Pradesh. The SIT recovered the jewellery and other items including Sonam's laptop and pen drive from the house of the in-laws of an Indore-based property dealer, Silome James. James had rented out a flat in Indore to one of the three men, Vishal Singh Chauhan, who allegedly helped Sonam in killing her husband. Chauhan moved into the flat after returning from Meghalaya following the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi. James was arrested earlier over suspicion that he tried to tamper with evidence and hide incriminating material linked to the case. The owner of the flat, Lokendra Tomar, and the security guard, Balveer, have been arrested too for tampering with evidence. The suspicion turned out to be true when the Meghalaya SIT reached his in-laws house in Ratlam and also found cash and incriminating documents there. During interrogation, James told the SIT that he moved the items to the house in Ratlam of his in-laws. The SIT officers said that Sonam, the key accused in the murder case, is believed to have stayed in the Indore flat rented out by James between May 26 and June 8, before she surrendered to the police. Raja Raghuvanshi was killed by Sonam and the three men while the couple was in Meghalaya for their honeymoon. They were presumed missing when their family members could not reach them. What initially started as a probe to find the couple turned into a murder investigation when Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2. His preliminary autopsy report revealed that he was attacked twice - once each on the back and front of his head. On June 7, the 'missing' wife was found in an unconscious state at a 'dhaba' in Ghazipur. She was taken to Ghazipur Medical College for treatment, where she surrendered before the police. The remaining three killers were also subsequently arrested.
