In conversation with Bournemouth and Mexico star Julian Araujo

Arguably more so than any of his Bournemouth teammates, Julián Araujo is well used to life in America, with the 23-year-old defender born in California in 2001, though he now represents Mexico by virtue of being able to play for either country. The breakout LA Galaxy star got a dream move to Barcelona in 2023 but his dreams never came to fruition, and he moved to the Cherries the following year. Now in the midst of the Premier League Summer Series, with Bournemouth facing Manchester United in Chicago on Wednesday off the back of a comprehensive 3-0 win over Everton last weekend in New Jersey, Araujo has been discussing the importance of pre-season, and his hopes with both club and country with CNN Espanol's Elizabeth Perez.

Bournemouth signs Diakite to bolster defense after $200M of sales

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Bournemouth bolstered its creaking defense by signing center back Bafodé Diakité from Lille on Wednesday in a deal worth up to a reported 40 million euros ($47 million). Bournemouth has sold almost its entire first-choice backline over the offseason — center backs Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi and left back Milos Kerkez, as well as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga — to generate around $200 million. He could make his debut for Bournemouth at Liverpool on Friday in the opening game of the Premier League season. ___

Barcelona board agree to risk €7m in personal wealth in bid to register Rashford, Garcia

Barcelona's board agreed to take emergency financial action at a meeting on Wednesday as the club continues to try to register their new signings in time to start their La Liga title defence on Saturday. With three days to go before Barca's first match of the 2025-26 campaign, Hansi Flick's major signings of the summer — including new goalkeeper Joan Garcia and Manchester United loanee striker Marcus Rashford — are still not eligible to play. Advertisement Because Barca have been overspending on their salary limit — calculated by La Liga for each club according to their revenue — they have not been able to register new players. Now, in an attempt to ease the situation, Barca executives have prepared the action of putting their own personal wealth at risk as part of a bank guarantee worth €7million (£6m, $8.2m). Barca sources — who asked to speak anonymously as they did not have permission to comment — said the step was necessary in order to tackle overspending in other sporting departments of the club. Back in June 2023, the same measure was taken, for almost the exact same sum, for the same reasons of overspending. Club sources also said their expectation was still that all signings will be registered. They have until the end of the transfer window to do so, or the players concerned (Garcia, Rashford, the returning Wojciech Szczesny and defender Gerard Martin, who now needs to be registered as a first-team player rather than with their reserves) will have to sit out the season until the winter transfer window opens in January. But Barca have always stressed that the key to bringing themselves in line with La Liga's rules lies with their sale of future proceeds from executive boxes at the Camp Nou for €100m (£86.9m; $115.5m) in December 2024. This money has so far not had the approval from auditors that La Liga says it must receive before it can be applied towards its calculation of Barca's salary limit. A Barca source told The Athletic they expected that to be approved 'either this week or next'. Meanwhile, Barca are still waiting to be told by La Liga whether Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury means they can take advantage of a rule around replacing injured players' registrations with that of a new player. Barca had hoped to do so to register Garcia, who arrived from Espanyol in June for his €25m release clause. It should also be remembered that Rashford's signing was only accelerated after Barca's move for Nico Williams broke down at the very last minute over the Athletic Club winger's concern that the Catalans might not be able to register him. The 23-year-old asked for a clause to be inserted into his contract allowing him to leave for free if that turned out to be the case. Barca rejected the request, so Williams decided to sign a new contract in Bilbao. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle

Bournemouth in advanced talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen's Amine Adli

Bournemouth are in advanced negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Morocco international Amine Adli in a deal worth around £26 million. The 25-year-old, who can operate across the forward line, was a key part of the Leverkusen team that won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in 2023-24, also reaching the Europa League final. That campaign was his most productive to date, delivering 10 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions. Adli has scored 23 goals and provided 24 assists in 142 matches for Leverkusen since joining from Toulouse in 2021. He represented France at youth level before switching allegiance to Morocco, earning 15 senior caps so far. Last season was disrupted by a broken leg that kept him out for three months, limiting him to six Bundesliga starts. However, his performances when fit have kept him in demand, with Bournemouth now hoping to bring him to the Premier League. The proposed move could trigger a chain of transfers involving Brentford and Newcastle United. Bournemouth forward Dango Ouattara has been the subject of talks with Brentford, who are seeking attacking reinforcements. The Bees view Ouattara as their preferred replacement for Yoane Wissa, who is wanted by Newcastle. Newcastle are pursuing Wissa after missing out on Liam Delap and Joao Pedro. The 28-year-old had a 'gentleman's agreement' to leave Brentford this summer, having stayed on last season when Ivan Toney departed. However, the sale of Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United initially saw Brentford block his exit, prompting Wissa to refuse to train. The Magpies are confident of sealing a deal worth about £35 million for Wissa, but Brentford will only sanction the move once they have a replacement in place. That replacement is expected to be Ouattara — provided Bournemouth secure Adli. Ouattara, primarily a left winger but also capable on the right or through the middle, joined Bournemouth in January 2023 from Lorient. He scored three goals in his debut Premier League campaign and has continued to attract interest for his pace and direct style. Bournemouth have already strengthened this summer with the arrivals of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from Chelsea, left-back Adrien Truffert from Rennes, centre-back Bafode Diakite from Lille and forward Eli Junior Kroupi from Lorient. Adding Adli would give manager Andoni Iraola another versatile attacking option as the club aim to push further up the table next season. With negotiations at an advanced stage, the Cherries' pursuit of Adli could set off a domino effect that reshapes the attacking line-ups at Bournemouth, Brentford and Newcastle in the coming weeks.
