Sodomy charges: Education dept suspends Nabha teacher
Punjab education department on Monday suspended the physical education teacher, who has been booked for sodomising a 15-year-old student in Nabha town of Patiala district. The accused is yet to be arrested.
As per the suspension orders, a copy of which is with HT, the accused has been directed to report to the district education officer in Sangrur. The suspension comes after the Patiala police booked the accused for sodomising his student.
The accused teacher is a physical education teacher at Government High School and was booked under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act and 351 (2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Education department officials said that an inquiry will be started to find out if there were any other victims during the accused's previous postings.
'The teacher has been suspended with immediate effect. The department will also conduct an inquiry into his alleged misconduct. We will also see if there were more victims,' said a senior official of the education department, pleading anonymity.
According to information, the accused was conferred the National Award in 2018 for his efforts to transform the government schools of Punjab without any financial aid or government intervention. He was also felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Despite repeated attempts, the accused teacher couldn't be contacted for comments.
Nabha deputy superintendent of police Mandeep Kaur said that raids were underway to nab the accused.

Ghaziabad: 2 men on morning walk killed by speeding car
An unidentified speeding vehicle hit and killed two men on their morning walk near the rotary area of the Hindon elevated road in Ghaziabad at 6am on Friday, and then sped away, police said. Police rushed the two to a hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. Police have launched a search for the car and the driver. The victims were identified as Subhash Singh, 57, and his neighbour, Kamlesh Yadav, 45, residents of Brij Nagri in Nandgram, police said. 'The victims had gone for a morning walk and were hit by a speeding car, probably a Swift Dzire, near the rotary of the Hindon elevated road. Passerby informed us and we rushed them to a hospital. Both were declared dead by doctors. We will soon lodge a first information report against the unidentified driver. He fled with the vehicle soon after the incident and did not stop. We are trying to get footage from nearby CCTVs and will soon trace the suspect,' said Poonam Mishra, assistant commissioner of police of Nandgram circle. The rotary is the start/exit point of the 10.3km Hindon elevated road, which connects with the border of East Delhi. The road allows signal-free movement from Ghaziabad to Delhi. 'The two were probably crossing the road when the vehicle hit them. It was early morning so our traffic personnel were not present for duty. However, CCTVs are being scanned to get clues to the incident. The case will be investigated by Nandgram police station,' said Sacchidanand, additional deputy commissioner of police (traffic). According to the families of the victims, the two were friends and regularly went for morning walks in the nearby city forest. 'Both used to go around 5am and return by 6am. On Friday, some of our neighbours who also had gone for a walk informed us about the accident. We rushed to the scene but police had already arrived and were taking them to hospital. Our neighbour Kamlesh Yadav suffered multiple fractures to his leg and fell on the other side of the road divider. My father suffered multiple fractures to his head and severe head injuries, which led to his death,' said Atul Singh, son of Subhash Singh. The families of both victims have given a written complaint to the police. Based on a complaint by the family of the victims, the Nandgram police station registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 281 (rash driving on public way), and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) against the unidentified driver.

After 10 years, HC frees main jailed for rape of minor
Bhopal/Jabalpur: A division bench of MP high court has acquitted a man who spent 10 years in jail after being convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl, citing a lack of conclusive evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecution's case. Rinku alias Ghanshyam, in his revision petition filed in 2015 following conviction by a POCSO court, said the FIR about rape was lodged 10 days after the alleged incident, there was no plausible ground for delay in reporting the incident to police. Besides, he was held guilty and sentenced without a DNA report confirming rape with the minor girl. It was alleged in the FIR that he dragged the girl to a corner while she was playing the residence of her friend and raped her and when she shouted for help, mother of the girl's friend came there and the accused ran away. The division bench of justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Shukla, in their order, said the delay in lodging FIR has been explained by the family of the girl stating that they were scared but the girl's mother visited the house of the convict after the incident to express her anger. "If she were scared, she would not have not done it. The convict didn't threaten the girl at the time of the alleged incident or thereafter. The girl's father, in his testimony, admitted that he had no information about the incident of rape with his daughter. Mother of the girl and the convict have had a fight over filling water from the public tap. The convict had hit the woman and thrown her utensil brought to fetch water. The girl's mother has also admitted that the Sarpanch of the village asked her to lodge an FIR against the accused. An FSL report confirmed presence of sperm in the undergarment of the girl, but police didn't proceed to get DNA profiling done to substantiate the charge of rape on the convict. Besides, delay in lodging FIR about a crime raises doubts over credibility of the charge. In the absence of credible evidence, the decision of the trial court was set aside and the convict was acquitted, the judges said in the ruling. FIR after sick mare found tied up without food, water
1 2 Kolkata: An FIR was registered after Peta India rescued a horse from Maidan with assistance from cops last Monday. The mare, blind in one eye and whose physical condition indicated prolonged neglect by her former owner, was found tied up with no access to food or water. Veterinarians said she was emaciated and suffering from painful chronic osteoarthritis. The mare was later transferred to a sanctuary. The FIR was registered on June 2 under sections on negligent conduct regarding the animal, which poses a probable danger to human life or any potential threat of grievous harm, and for causing grievous hurt by maiming the animal. This case also invokes multiple sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, including neglecting the duty of care, for unreasonably tethering the animal, and for failing to provide adequate food, water, and shelter. Moreover, Section 3(5) of the BNS was invoked for committing crimes in furtherance of common intention. "This rescue is not an isolated case; it's a reflection of the ongoing cruelty that horses face daily on Kolkata's roads, hauling tourist carriages and when abandoned in the Maidan area. We urge CM Mamata Banerjee to take decisive action to retire all horses used to pull carriages, and introduce heritage-style electric carriages," said Peta India advocacy associate Chumki Dutta. In recent months, Peta India has filed two FIRs — at Bhowanipore and Maidan — following two incidents of cruelty to horses.
