KL Rahul linked with KKR for mega trade ahead of IPL 2026; Why 3-time champs want India batter from Delhi Capitals?

Mint21 hours ago
Three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders are keen on getting India's wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul in a high-profile trade from Delhi Capitals, ahead of the upcoming season next year. Rahul, who captained Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for three seasons from 2022 to 2024, was bought for ₹ 14 crore by Delhi Capitals during the mega auction in Saudi Arabia ahead of IPL 2025.
According to a TOI report, the Shahrukh Khan co-owned franchise are interested in the India opener and have already contacted the cricketer, who is currently on national duty in the United Kingdom in the ongoing Test series against England.
Having made his IPL debut in 2013, Rahul has been prolific with the bat since the 2018 season and is one of the most-sought after players in the cash -rich league. In the last eight years, Rahul scored 600-plus runs in four seasons and 500-plus runs thrice. The only year where couldn't made his bat do the talking was in 2023.
In fact in IPL 2025, Rahul managed 539 runs from 13 games including a hundred and three fifties.
Ever since KKR parted ways with 2024 IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer, finding a perfect candidate for leadership has been a task for the KKR management. During the IPL 2025 mega auction, KKR didn't spend money on a player with good captaincy record, instead spend a whopping ₹ 23.75 crores on Venkatesh Iyer.
KKR appointed Ajinkya Rahane as the captain for IPL 2025, and crashed out of the league stage. If Rahul joins the Kolkata franchise, Rahul could be named as captain at KKR.
Another reason for KKR showing interest in Rahul is his connection with former India assistant coach Abhishek Bayar. The former Mumbai stalwart has worked with Rahul during his India days.
However, the biggest drawback for KKR will be they have no one who could Rahul's potential at Delhi Capitals. Honestly, KKR do not have any such player on whom Delhi Capitals may be interested upon. 'However, the deal is unlikely to work out as KKR don't have anybody they can trade to the Delhi Capitals in return,' a source told TOI.

Sarfaraz Khan, Shreyas Iyer eye Test comeback as they confirm availability for Duleep Trophy

India batters Sarfaraz Khan and Shreyas Iyer have confirmed their availability to participate in the Duleep Trophy for the West Zone. The tournament is set to begin on August 28, and the zonal selection will happen on Friday afternoon. Speaking to Hindustan Times, sources with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed that both Shreyas and Sarfaraz Khan have confirmed to the cricket body their willingness to participate in the tournament. India's Shreyas Iyer during England's tour of India in 2024(AFP) Apart from Shreyas and Sarfaraz, Shivam Dube and Tushar Deshpande have also confirmed their intention to participate in the tournament. West Zone have already qualified for the semi-final and they will take on the winner of the quarter-final on September 4. "Yes, Shreyas Iyer and Sarfaraz Khan have confirmed their availability. Tushar Deshpande and Shivam Dube are available as well for the crucial tie," the source told Hindustan Times. Shreyas Iyer currently finds himself out of favour when it comes to being picked for the Test side. He has played 14 Tests for India, scoring one century and five fifties. His performance in the domestic season for Mumbai last season led to people believing that he would be picked in the Test squad for the series against England. However, it was quite the contrary as the Ajit Agarkar-led committee looked past him for the five-match series. At that time, Agarkar had said, "Shreyas had a good ODI series, played well in domestic as well, but right now there's no room in Test cricket." On the other hand, head coach Gautam Gambhir had said that anyone can make a comeback into the Test squad as long as they keep grinding it out in domestic cricket. Earlier this year, Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings to the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL), but the side came up short against Rajat Patidar's Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Sarfaraz Khan eyes comeback Sarfaraz Khan, who has been piling on the runs in domestic cricket, was overlooked for the England tour despite grinding it out and losing several kilos. The right-handed batter's weight has been a talking point for so long; hence, it is no surprise that he decided to work on the same. Sarfaraz, who scored 150 runs in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand last year, failed to set the stage on fire in the next two Tests, and this led to him warming the bench in the entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Shardul Thakur and Yashasvi Jaiswal are unlikely to be picked in the West Zone squad as they were part of India's squad for the England tour and have been on the road for almost two months. Earlier, the South Zone had named Tilak Varma as their skipper for the Duleep Trophy. The likes of KL Rahul, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar and Mohammed Siraj have not been picked in the team.

England suffer India's fate: Will Chris Woakes be allowed an injury substitute?

England seamer Chris Woakes walked off the field injured on Day 1 of the final Test match against India at The Oval. Woakes, in the final session of the day, left the field grimacing in pain after injuring his left shoulder while chasing a incident occurred on the fifth ball of the 57th over when Karun Nair drove Jamie Overton down the ground. Woakes sprinted to stop the ball, successfully preventing a boundary as Nair ran three, but landed awkwardly and immediately clutched his shoulder before walking now find themselves in the same position as the Indian team, who were sweating over Rishabh Pant's fitness in the 3rd and 4th match of this series, after injuring his thumb and toe respectively. Pant, however, braved his injury to come out and bat, after he was allowed a wicketkeeping replacement in the form of Dhruv Jurel. Stokes on the other hand is unlikely to get an injury replacement in case he does not come out to bowl once again in the Test to the laws, a team can only substitute a player in case of a concussion. And hence it is unlikely that England will be permitted to bring on a substitute who can bowl in this Test seamer Gus Atkinson spoke briefly on the matter and said that things do not look good with Stokes at the moment, who might have dislocated his shoulder.'I don't know too much, but it doesn't look great. It's the last game of the series, and it's always a big shame when anyone gets injured. I'm hoping it's not too serious, and whatever it is, he'll have everyone's full support,' Atkinson said in the press conference after Day 1's vs Gambhir: Injury Replacement DebateThe debate on injury replacement in Test cricket has already taken place in this series. India head coach Gautam Gambhir and England captain Ben Stokes were on polar opposites on the matter. While Gambhir wanted the laws to allow replacements for external injuries, Stokes said that several teams would use loopholes and misuse the law."...if there's an external injury or serious concern, I fully support having a substitute. Especially in a series like this, if someone's visibly injured, there's nothing wrong with making a change. In a long series like this, you can't be forced to play with just ten players," Gambhir had argued after the 4th Test match in however, was not a fan and called out the suggestion."I think it's absolutely ridiculous that there's a conversation around an injury replacement," Stokes said. "I think that there would just be too many loopholes for teams to be able to go through. You pick your 11 for a game; injuries are part of the game. I completely understand the concussion replacement: player welfare, [and] player safety. But I think the conversation should just honestly stop around injury replacements because if you stick me in an MRI scanner, I could get someone else in straightaway," Stokes said in the post-match press you stick anyone else with an MRI scanner, a bowler is going to show, 'Oh yeah, you've got a bit of inflammation around your knee. Oh sweet, we can get another fresh bowler in.' I just think that conversation should be shut down and stopped," he now, England sweat over Woakes' injury as they had already rested four of their players for the final Test match. The team does not have Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Liam Dawson, who were rested from this case Woakes does not return, England will be left with Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton and spinner Jacob Bethell.- EndsMust Watch

Yuzvendra Chahal Admits "Faking" Relationship With Ex-Wife Dhanashree Verma: "RJ Mahvash Helped Me During This Phase"

New Delhi: Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal recently opened up about the reasons behind his divorce from actor-choreographer Dhanashree Verma. The couple ended their five-year marriage earlier this year. What's Happening In a recent conversation with Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel, Yuzvendra Chahal revealed that they had been facing issues for a couple of years but chose not to make their problems public until things were final. "It had been going on for a while, but we decided that we don't want to show the world what's happening until something gets finalised," Chahal said. He explained that the lack of time for each other due to their busy schedules was one of the major reasons behind the rift. While Chahal was playing for the national team, Dhanashree was occupied with her own career. When asked if they were faking their relationship towards the end, Chahal nodded in agreement. He also shared that he took a break from cricket during that period to deal with his mental health. "I asked for a break from Vijay Hazare Trophy because I was not able to use my mind. Cricket gave me happiness, and continues to make me happy and if I am not able to do that, then something is wrong so I took a month-long break," he said. Yuzvendra Chahal On Being Called A "Cheater" Yuzvendra Chahal addressed the public perception around him at the time, especially the rumours that labelled him a cheater. "And I have never cheated in my life. I am not that person. You will never find anyone as loyal as me," he said, adding that he felt no need to prove anything to the world since those close to him already knew the truth. He admitted to going through a tough phase post-divorce. "For a few months, I was depressed. I got anxiety attacks but only my close ones know about that. I used to have suicidal thoughts because my mind had stopped working," he said. He credited his friends and family, including RJ Mahvash, for supporting him. "My family, Mahvash helped me during this phase." Chahal also spoke about wanting to settle the divorce before the IPL season began. Referring to the time he wore a T-shirt that read 'Be your own sugar daddy', he said, "I just felt like I wanted to give one message and I did that." He added, "Because something had happened from the other end... I didn't want to do it earlier but then something happened and I decided, now everyone can go to hell, I will do what I want." Background Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma filed for divorce in February 2024. Reports during the proceedings stated that she received Rs 4.75 crore in alimony.
