Zalewski and Asllani keep Inter in Serie A title contention with win at Torino

The Guardian11-05-2025

Inter kept their Serie A title hopes alive with a confident 2-0 win at Torino on a rain-drenched Sunday as they showed no signs of letting up in the title race. The win brought the Champions League finalists level at the top on 77 points with Napoli, who host Genoa later on Sunday.
Inter, who reached the Champions League final by beating Barcelona in a thrilling encounter on Tuesday, left several key players on the bench and rested others as they looked to keep the squad fresh. The striker and captain Lautaro Martinez, the goalkeeper Yann Sommer, and the midfielder Davide Frattesi were all left out of the starting lineup.
The match came to an early, unscheduled halt in the opening moments as someone in the crowd appeared to need medical assistance, with play resuming after a few minutes. Inter took the lead after 14 minutes, with Nicola Zalewski losing his marker with a clever turn before cutting inside to the edge of the box and slotting the ball into the net.
In first-half stoppage time, Torino went close to an equaliser with a diving header from Ché Adams, but the Inter keeper Josep Martínez produced an incredible one-handed save on the line.
Heavy rain and a thunderstorm interrupted the match, forcing a stoppage in the first half and delaying the start of the second, as the referee, Federico La Penna, carried out a thorough pitch inspection during the break.
In the 49th minute, with the rain pouring down, Inter were awarded a penalty after the Torino keeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic fouled Mehdi Taremi. Kristjan Asllani converted from the spot to double the visitors' lead and seal the match.
Borussia Dortmund powered back from a goal down to win 4-2 at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Sunday, keeping alive their chance of a top-four finish going into the final matchday next week.
Dortmund have won six of their past seven league games to climb from 11th to fifth and are just a point behind fourth-placed Freiburg. Last year's Champions League finalists found themselves a goal down in the 31st minute with Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong giving the hosts a deserved lead in their coach Xabi Alonso's final home match. The Spaniard announced on Friday that he will leave at the end of the season, having led them to the domestic double last season without defeat while also reaching the Europa League final.
'We lived a lot of special moments and it was a mixed feeling in the last home game. We are thankful for what we achieved in the past three years,' Alonso said. 'I have changed a lot in these years. We had many experiences. Luckily most of them good ones, today maybe not but I will forget this one quickly,' he said. 'What I lived here in Leverkusen has been very special.'
A half-dozen saves by Kobel kept them in Sunday's game in the first half but after Leverkusen's goal the visitors never looked back. Dortmund levelled two minutes later with Julian Brandt slotting in from a Karim Adeyemi cutback. The visitors scored again in the 43rd after winning possession in Leverkusen's half and Julian Ryerson completing the move with a low finish from the right.
Leverkusen lost possession once more in the 73rd with Marcel Sabitzer feeding Adeyemi to make it 3-1. Before the hosts had time to regroup they conceded another goal through Serhou Guirassy, who scored his 20th league goal of the season in the 77th. Jonas Hofmann managed to score in stoppage time for Leverkusen.
Dortmund host relegated Holstein Kiel next week.
Third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt drew 2-2 at home to St Pauli, missing the chance to nail down their Champions League spot ahead of the season finale. Eintracht are on 57, three ahead of Dortmund and two in front of Freiburg.St Pauli are all but assured another year in the Bundesliga.

Sunday's briefing: England U21s continue Euros defence as PSG begin CWC campaign

Under-21s boss Carsley expects more England Under-21s boss Carsley insisted his side still had plenty to improve on, despite a winning start at the European Championship. Goals from Harvey Elliott, Jonathan Rowe and Charlie Cresswell saw Croatia defeated 3-1, with Sunday's game against Slovenia providing a chance to cement their place in the knockout rounds. 'It might seem a bit clunky at times, unstructured, but I thought the players took on board what we tried to do, lots of positives, the Czechs had good chances as well so lots to improve,' said Carsley. 'The longer I feel we can stay in the competition, the more clean our play will become.' Dembele has Ballon d'Or dreams Champions League winner Ousmane Dembele is chasing the 'holy grail' of the Ballon d'Or. The forward's performances were integral to Paris St Germain's inaugural triumph in Europe's premier club competition but having conquered that challenge, the 28-year-old is looking to emulate his idol and former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi. 'Winning a Ballon d'Or when you're a footballer is obviously the holy grail on an individual level. It's something you dream of as a child,' Dembele told France Football. 'I've had difficult years with injuries, weak performances as well. This season I think I've been consistent, so we'll see what happens. 'It would be exceptional to have my name on the list and to be one of the favourites is already a great victory, although I hope to win it one day. Bright future ahead for FC United FC United want to continue being an 'antidote' to modern football as the breakaway club celebrate their 20th anniversary. The Glazer family's controversial takeover at Manchester United was the catalyst for the club's foundation on June 14, 2005, offering an affordable, inclusive and fan-owned alternative for disenfranchised supporters. FCUM reached the National League North and built a 4,900-capacity stadium within a decade and now the goal is for the Northern Premier League Premier Division side to kick on again. 'I think the future's bright. I think we're about to enter into our next grand phase,' chair Nick Boom told the PA news agency. 'We've spent a lot of time trying to kind of get the club into a position where it's financially stable and it feels like we now have got to a position where we can kind of invest.' What's on today? Champions League winners Paris St Germain take on Atletico Madrid in an early glamour tie in the Club World Cup. Bayern Munich against Auckland City offers less allure. England Under-21s could secure progress to the European Championship knockout stage with victory over Slovenia.

Billy Gilmour conquering Serie A with Napoli has old pal Harry Cochrane pondering Juventus what ifs

Former Hearts prodigy is still only 24 and looking to work his way back to the top seven years on from Juve sliding doors moment Watching Billy Gilmour conquer Serie A brought a smile to Harry Cochrane's face. And a deep sense of what could have been. The former Hearts prodigy was delighted to see his old Grange Academy, Rangers and Scotland youth team mate snaffle the Scudetto. ‌ But he can't help shake the feeling it really could have been him. ‌ Ten years earlier the duo had stood in the San Siro as wide-eyed 13-year-old kids from the SFA performance School in Kilmarnock to watch Carlos Tevez inspire Juventus to a 1-0 win over Milan en-route to the Serie A title. A decade on and here was Gilmour swapping the stands for the big stage with Napoli and doing the exact same. It's been a sensational year in Italian football for the so-called 'Tartan-accio' of Gilmour, Scott McTominay, Lewis Ferguson, Josh Doig and Che Adams. Not forgetting the trailblazer Liam Henderson now in his eighth season . But while Cochrane bursts with pride for his old pal there's a gnawing sensation which refuses to go away at the back of his mind. It's been there for over seven years. Since he burst sensationally onto the Premiership scene as a 16-year-old kid at Hearts, becoming the Jambos' youngest ever goalscorer as he helped end Celtic's 69-game unbeaten run in a 4-0 Tynecastle trouncing. ‌ Cochrane's form in that breakthrough season caught the eye of Italian giants Juventus. More than just interest, the midfielder met with a Juve representative in a Bothwell restaurant and spoke football, ambitions and pasta. Like any teenager he was thrilled. Excited beyond belief. Then, for whatever reason, the follow-up call from Italy never arrived. ‌ Fast forward seven years and Cochrane - still only 24 - has just left Queen of the South as he looks to climb the ranks again. And opening up on that brush with a Turin break, Cochrane told Mail Sport: 'What could have been… it would have been brilliant. 'My dad had even offered to move over with me. I said, 'you can't just leave my mum here!' ‌ 'But it looked like it was happening and even though dad told me not to get over-excited before there was a concrete offer, it was hard not to. 'Juventus sent a guy over to meet us. I can't remember his name. 'We met in a wee restaurant in Bothwell. It was just me, my family and the Juve guy. ‌ 'Just talking football, really. It wasn't anything like deals or anything like that. It was basically just to meet me over a meal. 'I remember getting a Carbonara and the said 'Carbonara?' 'I said, to him, 'yeah, that's Italian'. ‌ 'He went, 'no, no that's definitely not Italian!'. 'Maybe that's what put him off! 'They said they were going to make a bid. ‌ 'It was the best news that I'd had in my life, anybody at that age is going to think,' wow, this is mental'. 'But nothing happened. For it to come crashing down - it sort of set me back a wee bit mentally. 'But I've been in the game for a while now, I'm still only 24, I've still got hopes and dreams that I can go back up to the level I was playing at.' ‌ Cochrane could be well excused for having mixed emotions watching Gilmour tear it up in the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. But he couldn't be happier for his old pal. He said: 'I was at school with Billy, played in the same Rangers youth team til 13 and then the Scotland age groups. ‌ 'We went on a school trip to Italy in second year and we always shared a room. We went to the San Siro to watch AC Milan v Juventus. 'It's absolutely incredible what he's gone on to achieve. What a season they've had at Napoli. 'I sent him a message to say congratulations. He always gets back to me, to be fair to him. ‌ 'I remember playing in the Victory Shield. with Scotland, my dad told me the guy doing the commentary was calling me the Duracell Bunny. 'He was saying 'just let Gilmour have the ball and Cochrane run about tackling people!' 'You could always tell Billy was going to be one of the best. He has been since he was really young.' ‌ Serie A is a long way from League One in Scotland but Cochrane insists he has no regrets about quitting Hearts four years ago. He reckons he's a better player for his time at Queens where he spent his third season, under Marvin Bartley, as captain. Now, about to become a dad for the second time with a little girl due to join his two-year-old son Albie, Cochrane is weighing up his next move. ‌ He said: 'I always question myself about turning down that new deal at Hearts four years ago. But I just wanted to go and play football. 'I wasn't getting that at Hearts at the time. I'd been out on loan at Dunfermline and Montrose. I still think it was the right decision. ‌ 'I'm better for those four years at Queens, playing regular first team football. Being captain for a season added responsibility. 'Marvin asked me if I wanted to be the captain and I was never going to say no. That's a privilege. 'I had to do team talks before the games, which I wasn't used to. ‌ 'The first one was against Motherwell in the cup. I just said a few things and added 'lads it's Motherwell not Barcelona, let's go!' 'We drew 3-3, so it must have worked! But it's time to move on again. I'm young, I'm experienced, I work hard on the pitch and do the right things off it. The goal is to get back to playing at the top. 'I'd be open to going anywhere. But with my partner Caitlin being pregnant again it's not just a decision for me to make. It's the whole family. 'That's why I'm taking my time. It has to be right for my family and my career as well. 'I want to get back to playing in front of big crowds. That's what everybody wants.'

Greg Docherty reveals Charlton driving factor as former Rangers star refuses to let one dream die

The former Rangers and Hull City midfielder is on his way back to the English Championship after Wembley play-off joy Greg Docherty tasted promotion joy at Wembley - and he hasn't given up hope of international recognition at Hampden. The former Rangers and Hull midfielder is on his way back to the Championship down south after captaining Charlton to play-off joy last week. ‌ And now as he prepares to take a step up to England's second-tier, he hopes that will be a platform for a Scotland call-up. ‌ The 28-year-old was capped at several youth levels - including with Scot Gemmill's Under-21s. But while he's yet to make the step up to Steve Clarke's full national team, he believes there is still time yet. The Addicks ace said: 'Yeah, it has to be my ambition. 'It's about striving for the best version of yourself and so hopefully doing well for Charlton will help that. 'If it doesn't happen for me, I'll still support Scotland. 'But of course that dream is still a driving factor, I think it would be silly for it not to be. ‌ 'I know the midfield has always been the strongest part of the squad, especially over the last few years. 'There's a lot of young midfielders coming through, which is great to see, and the nation is now qualifying for tournaments again. ‌ 'But I'm still fit. That endurance side has always been my thing so age to me doesn't really kick in at the minute. 'I've truly believe I've still got my best years ahead of me. 'I'm going to be playing in a really demanding league again next season. I want to improve on the spell I had with Hull in the Championship, I want to be more of a dominant midfielder in the Championship. ‌ 'I feel I'm better for it now, having the experience that I've had, particularly this season, leading up to now.' Docherty certainly won't have it easy fighting his way into an engine room packed with Premier League stars and even a couple of new Serie A champions. But he's willing to give it his best shot. He said: 'I knew last year that by stepping down to League One, I wouldn't be on the cards, so I put those thoughts on the back burner. But playing for Scotland is something that I would love to do. 'I know I've got some proper players in front of me like your Scott McTominays, you Billy Gilmours, your John McGinns. But all I can do is play my best and hope I catch someone's eye.'
