Zalewski and Asllani keep Inter in Serie A title contention with win at Torino

The Guardian11-05-2025
Inter kept their Serie A title hopes alive with a confident 2-0 win at Torino on a rain-drenched Sunday as they showed no signs of letting up in the title race. The win brought the Champions League finalists level at the top on 77 points with Napoli, who host Genoa later on Sunday.
Inter, who reached the Champions League final by beating Barcelona in a thrilling encounter on Tuesday, left several key players on the bench and rested others as they looked to keep the squad fresh. The striker and captain Lautaro Martinez, the goalkeeper Yann Sommer, and the midfielder Davide Frattesi were all left out of the starting lineup.
The match came to an early, unscheduled halt in the opening moments as someone in the crowd appeared to need medical assistance, with play resuming after a few minutes. Inter took the lead after 14 minutes, with Nicola Zalewski losing his marker with a clever turn before cutting inside to the edge of the box and slotting the ball into the net.
In first-half stoppage time, Torino went close to an equaliser with a diving header from Ché Adams, but the Inter keeper Josep Martínez produced an incredible one-handed save on the line.
Heavy rain and a thunderstorm interrupted the match, forcing a stoppage in the first half and delaying the start of the second, as the referee, Federico La Penna, carried out a thorough pitch inspection during the break.
In the 49th minute, with the rain pouring down, Inter were awarded a penalty after the Torino keeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic fouled Mehdi Taremi. Kristjan Asllani converted from the spot to double the visitors' lead and seal the match.
Borussia Dortmund powered back from a goal down to win 4-2 at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Sunday, keeping alive their chance of a top-four finish going into the final matchday next week.
Dortmund have won six of their past seven league games to climb from 11th to fifth and are just a point behind fourth-placed Freiburg. Last year's Champions League finalists found themselves a goal down in the 31st minute with Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong giving the hosts a deserved lead in their coach Xabi Alonso's final home match. The Spaniard announced on Friday that he will leave at the end of the season, having led them to the domestic double last season without defeat while also reaching the Europa League final.
'We lived a lot of special moments and it was a mixed feeling in the last home game. We are thankful for what we achieved in the past three years,' Alonso said. 'I have changed a lot in these years. We had many experiences. Luckily most of them good ones, today maybe not but I will forget this one quickly,' he said. 'What I lived here in Leverkusen has been very special.'
A half-dozen saves by Kobel kept them in Sunday's game in the first half but after Leverkusen's goal the visitors never looked back. Dortmund levelled two minutes later with Julian Brandt slotting in from a Karim Adeyemi cutback. The visitors scored again in the 43rd after winning possession in Leverkusen's half and Julian Ryerson completing the move with a low finish from the right.
Leverkusen lost possession once more in the 73rd with Marcel Sabitzer feeding Adeyemi to make it 3-1. Before the hosts had time to regroup they conceded another goal through Serhou Guirassy, who scored his 20th league goal of the season in the 77th. Jonas Hofmann managed to score in stoppage time for Leverkusen.
Dortmund host relegated Holstein Kiel next week.
Third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt drew 2-2 at home to St Pauli, missing the chance to nail down their Champions League spot ahead of the season finale. Eintracht are on 57, three ahead of Dortmund and two in front of Freiburg.St Pauli are all but assured another year in the Bundesliga.

Who will win Viktoria Plzen vs Rangers? Our writers deliver predictions for Champions League showdown

Russell Martin's men have a three goal advantage but will want a big win on the road after more dropped points domestically Rangers are in the driving seat for the Champions League play-off round after a thumping win at Ibrox as they head for Plzen looking to finish the job. ‌ Russell Martin's men defeated Viktoria Plzen 3-0 last midweek thanks to Djeidi Gassama's double and a penalty from Cyriel Dessers. ‌ New boy Oliver Antman made quite the impression on his debut but after experiencing the highs of Europe once more, the Light Blues slipped up domestically once again in as many weeks as they dropped points at home to Dundee. ‌ Skipper James Tavernier rescued a point from the spot in added-time to make it two draws from two games in the Premiership. Despite leading by three goals, the message will be clear from Martin and his staff that the job is not done and it is only half-time. Scott McDermott It's Rangers' favourite scoreline at the minute and the same again will see Martin's side through to the play-off. These players have proved - in big European away games - they can get the job done and they're halfway there after a terrific display at Ibrox. Gers should score in Czech Republic which should kill off Plzen. Viktoria Plzen 1 Rangers 1 Andy Newport Russell Martin's short stint as Ibrox boss has been a rollercoaster so far but his side are firmly on track for the Champions League play-offs after last week's first leg win. The new look Light Blues have toiled badly domestically against compact defences but the onus will be on Plzen to come out and try to recover some pride after that hammering in Glasgow. Martin will hope his side again find the space to exploit. ‌ Plzen 0 Rangers 2 Keith Jackson It's midweek and a European tie so Russell Martin can relax in the knowledge that his players will actually fancy going to their work. The tie was effectively killed stone dead at Ibrox last week but Rangers can do us all a favour and boost the coefficient with an away win against a very average Czech side. Viktoria Plzen 0 Rangers 2 ‌ Gavin Berry It's job done for Russell Martin's side - or at least it should be - after their emphatic win at Ibrox. The Czechs will be the ones who have to go all out to get back in the tie and it will just be about making sure there are no dramas for Rangers. Viktoria Plzen 1 Rangers 1 Scott Burns I know Rangers have been poor domestically but I can see them getting another win in Europe. The Czechs aren't the strongest and I can see Russell Martin's team booking their place in the play-off in style with two wins. Viktoria Plzen 1 Rangers 2 Michael Gannon Rangers can hit the Euro switch again and see it out. Plzen will need to have a go and it'll leave plenty of space to exploit. Gers are more likely to add to their advantage and go through with room to spare. Viktoria Plzen 1 Rangers 2

Gianluigi Donnarumma open to move away from PSG amid reported Man Utd interest

Manchester United have been linked in some reports with an interest in the 26-year-old, who is out of contract next summer. However, it is understood that up to this point there has been no contact from United to PSG regarding Donnarumma. Lucas Chevalier's arrival at PSG has been followed by Donnarumma being left out of their Super Cup squad (Joe Giddens/PA) The European champions completed the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille over the weekend, and Donnarumma has now been left out for the game against Spurs in Udine. Donnarumma was part of the Italy squad which won Euro 2020 by beating England in the final on penalties, and is still regarded as one of the world's top goalkeepers. He made over 200 appearances for AC Milan before joining PSG in 2021. He has won four Ligue 1 titles with the Parisiens and was part of the team which thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 to win last season's Champions League title.

It's being reported by Tuttosport that Serie A giants Juventus have been interested in the Denmark international for some time and now want to make a concrete bid for the 24-year-old. The Bianconeri are reportedly set to "guarantee him a five-year contract" worth around "£2.6million a year". However, they will need to sell players such as Douglas Luiz, Weston McKennie and Fabio Miretti to raise funds to make the move happen. Brighton are asking for £26m, which is slightly more than the £25m they paid Celtic for him last year. The Hoops made a substantial profit on O'Riley after paying MK Dons just £1.5m for him in January 2022. O'Riley made a huge impact in Scottish football, scoring 27 goals in more than a 100 games for the Hoops. As well as winning the Scottish Premiership three times, he helped the club win a treble in the 2022-2023. He was also Celtic Players' player of the year the following season. Just hours after completing his move from Celtic to Brighton he suffered a serious ankle injury on his debut against Crawley Town. Despite the setback, he would go on to make 23 appearances that season, scoring twice and assisting three goals. But he was left frustrated at being played out of position. Also the 24-year-old isn't getting regular game time and has been attracting attention from other Serie A giants including Napoli and Roma. Awkward Matt O'Riley moment has fans convinced 'he thinks he's still at Celtic' Meanwhile, on Saturday O'Riley revealed he still has a soft spot for Celtic and follows the team's results. He told the Celtic Way: "Even though I don't post that much on social media, I'm still watching every single game and trying to keep tabs on them. "I'm still in contact with people. "It's hard in football to keep contact with everybody because it moves so fast and things change, but I did make some good friends up there, and I'm still in contact with a lot of staff at Celtic, which has been nice."
