Gavin Williams just misses Guardians' first no-hitter in 44 years in 4-1 win over Mets
Williams (7-4) walked three and struck out six, including Francisco Lindor to lead off the ninth. But Soto homered just beyond the leaping grasp of center fielder Angel Martínez two pitches later for the Mets' first hit since the fourth inning of Tuesday's 3-2 loss.
The Guardians have not thrown a no-hitter since Len Barker twirled a perfect game on May 15, 1981. Their no-hitter drought is the longest in the majors.
There has not been a no-hitter in the majors this season.
Williams, who was the first player on the field in the ninth with nobody warming up in the Guardians' bullpen, retired Pete Alonso on a fly to right but exited after walking Brandon Nimmo for the third time.
The right-hander threw 126 pitches — 17 more than his previous career high and the most in the majors since Alex Cobb threw 131 in a one-hitter for the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 29, 2023.
Hunter Gaddis got Mark Vientos to fly out to earn his second save.
David Fry led off the second by homering against David Peterson (7-5). Martínez hit a two-run homer in the third and Gabriel Arias added an RBI triple in the sixth.
The Mets have lost eight of nine.

Inside: Starting quarterbacks return to preseason action, tonight's watch guide and why the Seahawks are a dark horse. This article is from Scoop City, The Athletic's NFL newsletter. Sign up here to receive it directly in your inbox. Most years, preseason football drifts by like a ship in the night. Scores are irrelevant, and teams are more interested in developing error-free football than racking up wins. (Except for John Harbaugh's Ravens, who are 21-4 in the preseason since 2017 … but whose offense lost the league's most yardage due to penalties last regular season.) There's still a lot to take away from these games. These August events matter in other ways. Last year, my preseason Week 1 takeaways foreshadowed the actual season better than I expected. The early lessons that ended up mattering: Of course, not everything matters. But early performances hint at how teams, players and units are trending as the season nears. The preseason matters in Cleveland. Their quarterbacks rarely get eyeballs this time of year, but injuries have presented Shedeur Sanders with an opportunity to convince the Browns that he's closer to being the first-rounder he was during mock-draft season than the discounted fifth-rounder they actually drafted. Can he beat expectations? His character is already impressing, with The Athletic's Jason Lloyd writing this: '[Sanders] doesn't come off as entitled. He's never publicly complained once about his slide on draft day. He puts his head down and goes to work. He is cognizant of his teammates and careful that his enormous presence doesn't block them out.' And when his famous father, Deion, wanted to visit training camp? Shedeur told him to stay home. There, Deion can watch his son's debut tomorrow night. Beat reporter Zac Jackson has the latest on Sanders' development. As for tonight … This is one of the more interesting preseasons we've seen. At quarterback, we have intriguing rookie starters (at least for now) in Sanders and Cam Ward, veterans like Joe Burrow and Kyler Murray actually playing, plus legitimate competitions in places like New Orleans and Indianapolis. Here's tonight's schedule, along with quarterback notes on each game: Daniel Jones has 'a good shot to start in Week 1″ according to The Athletic's James Boyd, adding that the former Giant has been the more consistent quarterback. Advertisement For this week, though, Anthony Richardson will play the first quarter and then some, with Jones subbing in for the remainder of the half. Those roles will reverse in their second preseason game, with Jones starting. (Baltimore? Resting Lamar Jackson, of course.) Watch for: WR AD Mitchell, a top-30 player on last year's consensus draft board, has been the Colts' best offensive player in joint practices. Burrow and most other Cincy starters are expected to play a handful of series tonight, with the goal of avoiding the slow starts that have plagued this team. Since Burrow was drafted, Cincinnati has won just 41 percent of their regular-season games in September (and 61 percent of their games otherwise). To date, the 28-year-old Burrow has thrown just eight preseason passes in his five-year career. That should change tonight. In Philly, it's uncertain whether Jalen Hurts suits up, though I'd expect backup Tanner McKee to take most of the reps regardless. Watch for: Eagles first-round LB Jihaad Campbell, Dane Brugler's 14th-ranked prospect who fell to No. 31 due to a shoulder injury. Campbell sure sounds healthy. Seattle plans to sit most starters, including Sam Darnold, which makes Jalen Milroe the player to watch. The third-round rookie has elite athleticism, but must improve his timing, touch and consistency to become an NFL starter. Tonight, we gauge his development since Alabama. As for Vegas, when HC Pete Carroll was asked if he'll play his starters, he said, 'Everybody is live. Everybody is ready to go.' I don't know whether that means starters who are 'ready' will play for long, but hopefully we see Geno Smith against his former team, at least for one series. Watch for: Receivers on both teams, but especially the Raiders. Who joins Jakobi Meyers as the starter? How do rookies Jack Bech and Dont'e Thornton look? Over to Dianna for an update from New England. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has made it a priority this training camp to establish a clear identity for his team, and he's doing it by example. During a joint practice with the Commanders on Wednesday, Vrabel threw himself into a scuffle to break it up, then emerged with a bloody face. 'You should see the other guy,' the 49-year-old Vrabel quipped to one player, as The Athletic's Chad Graff reported. Advertisement Starting QB Drake Maye appreciated the energy. 'That's what we're trying to build, and it starts with the head coach.' Vrabel told me as he was walking back into the facility, 'I just want my guys to know I have their back.' Message sent. Back to you, Jacob. Seattle has an elite defense and an offense primed to establish the run. Add a quarterback who won 14 games last season and a 'different' offensive line, and it's fair to wonder if Seattle is quietly fielding a Super Bowl contender. Let's start with their defense. I asked beat reporter Michael-Shawn Dugar if this unit can build off last year's second half, when they finished top-five in nearly every defensive category after their Week 10 bye. 💬 Michael-Shawn: 'Yes, I believe the Seahawks will have a top-five defense in 2025. They're bringing back nearly all the starters from last year's team, with the exception of outside linebacker Dre'Mont Jones, who has been replaced by DeMarcus Lawrence. The defense looks good in camp, particularly up front. The secondary also has a lot of young, potentially high-end talent – Riq Woolen, Julian Love and Devon Witherspoon have all made Pro Bowls – so I expect that unit to pick up where it left off last year as well.' On offense, Darnold's progress makes headlines, and their line is rightfully their focus, but this new-look receiver room is also a question. Replacing two long-term starters with Cooper Kupp and … who? When I messaged Michael-Shawn about Seattle's third option, his answer surprised me. 💬 Michael-Shawn: 'The Seahawks are transitioning toward being a heavy-personnel team (they drafted a tight end in the second round and a fullback in the fifth). So, the third option will probably be second-year tight end AJ Barner. He's a complete tight end in that he can block and made plays as a pass catcher, evidenced by his 30 catches and four touchdowns as a rookie in 2024. He's TE1 now that Noah Fant is gone.' 👀 Parsons' deal: No sure thing. As Michael Silver explains, we shouldn't assume the Cowboys and their star pass rusher work out their contractual differences.
