Benjamin Sesko has chance to land dream Man Utd shirt number after Ruben Amorim decision

Daily Mirrora day ago
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing their deal for Benjamin Sesko and the next task will be for the Slovenia international striker to choose a shirt number
Benjamin Sesko could return to his first ever squad number when he moves to Manchester United. However, that would require Ruben Amorim to take the number from Antony in the anticipation the winger will leave.

Amorim has already made that kind of move once this summer. Matheus Cunha inherited Marcus Rashford's No.10 shirt while the England international was still a United player, though Rashford has since joined Barcelona on loan.

Sesko wore 30 for RB Leipzig last season, but that number already belongs to United new boy Diego Leon. When Sesko arrives at Old Trafford - and it now appears to be when rather than if - he'll have to choose an alternative.

The No.11 he wore for Slovenia at Euro 2024 is also occupied, with Joshua Zirkzee going nowhere. However, 21, the number he wore as a teenager at Liefering, is likely to become available with Antony expected to leave the club.
Sesko scored 21 league goals for Liefering in the 2020-21 season with 21 on his back. That's still his best single-season return in the league, though he netted 21 times in all competitions for Leipzig last term.
United's move for Sesko will set them back up to £74million after an agreement was reached with Leipzig. He is due in for a medical on Friday after choosing Ruben Amorim's side over rivals Newcastle, and should be available for the Premier League opener against Arsenal a week on Sunday.
Amorim's team might not be done there, though. Gianluigi Donnarumma continues to be linked with an Old Trafford switch, and reports on the continent suggest Lucas Chevalier - the man primed to take his place at Paris Saint-Germain - has passed his medical ahead of a big-money move from Lille.
In terms of outgoings, Antony isn't the only one set to leave. Real Betis remain keen on the Brazilian after he thrived on loan with the club last season, though there is also interest from elsewhere amid questions over whether the La Liga side can meet United's asking price.

Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho are also expected to leave Old Trafford. Juventus have led the chase for Sancho for much of the summer, while Garnacho is the subject of renewed interest from Chelsea.
United want £50m for Argentina star Garnacho, who finished last season with the club despite January interest from both Chelsea and Napoli. Enzo Maresca's Blues are also pursuing a move for Leipzig's Xavi Simons, though, and may need to complete sales of their own if they're to land both targets.

Darwin Nunez completes switch from Liverpool to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal

Liverpool FC can confirm Darwin Nunez has completed a permanent transfer to Al-Hilal, subject to international clearance. Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) August 9, 2025 'The Uruguayan's three-year spell with the Reds concludes after he finalised a switch to the Saudi Pro League side today. 'Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future.' Nunez moved to Anfield in June 2022 from Benfica for an initial fee of £64m. He scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for the Reds, but started just eight Premier League matches during their title-winning season last term. Nunez was a target for another Saudi club, Al Nassr, in January, but a £60m bid was rejected as Liverpool did not want to sell in the middle of the season. However, his departure looked inevitable after a string of unconvincing displays, and takes Liverpool's income from sales this summer to almost £200m, with more likely to follow with £40m-plus-rated midfielder Harvey Elliott possibly on the move. It also opens up a space in their forward line, which has already been strengthened with the arrival of Hugo Ekitike as part of a near-£300m spend, and the number nine shirt. Liverpool retain an interest in Newcastle's Alexander Isak after having a £110m bid rejected last week. Magpies boss Eddie Howe confirmed on Friday that the wantaway Sweden striker is unlikely to feature in the opening game of the Premier League season at Aston Villa.

Tyrone Mings grabs Mason Greenwood by scruff of neck after flashpoint in friendly

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was involved in an angry exchange alongside Aston Villa's Tyrone Mings during the Premier League side's pre-season friendly with Marseille Mason Greenwood and Tyrone Mings angrily clashed in their pre-season meeting, with the ex- Manchester United man being grabbed by the neck. Greenwood's current side Marseille took on Aston Villa in a friendly on Saturday evening. ‌ But it ended up being an ill-tempered affair between the two sides. New signing Evann Guessand, Matty Cash, John McGinn, and Donyell Malen were all booked throughout the clash. ‌ Tensions then boiled over late on between Greenwood and a couple of Villa stars. The striker kicked out at Belgian midfielder Andre Onana after evading a number of challenges. ‌ That did not go down well with the former Everton man, who berated Greenwood, who then laughed in his face. Onana then pointed to his face as though the forward has spat at him, but it was unclear on whether he had actually done so. Defender Mings then got involved as he grappled with Greenwood and grabbed the striker by the scruff of his neck. Numerous players then piled in as the scenes turned ugly. Tempers soon calmed but Greenwood was left with a ripped shirt and was shortly taken off of the pitch by Roberto De Zerbi - who was spotted arguing with Unai Emery on the sidelines. Villa eventually fell to a 3-1 defeat to Marseille. Greenwood had scored in the first half, while Villa captain John McGinn also found the net. But two strikes from returning forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured victory for the French side.
