Phillips tosses complete game shutout as USC Upstate defeats Winthrop 7-0 in Big South Tournament

Yahoo23-05-2025
HIGH POINT, N.C. (USC Upstate SID) – Beginning its quest for a Big South Tournament championship, USC Upstate baseball opened the 2025 iteration of the event with a statement as Amp Phillips turned in the league's first nine-inning complete game shutout of the season, leading the Spartans to a 7-0 quarterfinal over No. 5 seed Winthrop. Setting the tone, the redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher from Lancaster, S.C., proved why he was named the Big South Newcomer of the Year, retiring the first seven batters he faced and permitting just five baserunners, one of which reached scoring position, advancing no further than second base. He finished the afternoon scattering four hits while striking out five in his first career complete game. Backing the stellar pitching performance, Upstate launched four home runs, including three homers to lead off innings. Redshirt freshman leftfielder Henry Zenor, sophomore shortstop Vance Sheahan, redshirt sophomore centerfielder Scott Newman, and junior second baseman Gage Griggs hit long balls for the Spartans with Zenor, Sheahan, and Griggs leading off innings. B1: Stepping to the plate as Upstate's leadoff batter in the home half of the first, Henry Zenor launched a hanging 3-2 breaking ball over the wall and right, delivering an early 1-0 lead.
B2: Following a leadoff double from Preston Lucas, the Spartans employed a pair of sacrifices to push across their second tally. A sac bunt from Gage Griggs moved Lucas to third with a sac fly from Jake Armsey scoring the run.
B6: Doubling its lead, Upstate used a pair of solo shots in the sixth, tacking on two more. Leading off the inning, Vance Sheahan launched one into the seats in left before Scott Newman launched one well past the wall in left-center.
B7: Hitting another 'leadoff' homer for the Spartans, Gage Griggs unloaded on a 1-0 pitch as his solo homer began a two-run frame. A sac fly from Zenor pushed across Armsey to tally Upstate's sixth run.
B8: Slapping a single into leftfield, Lucas recorded an RBI as his base hit scored Johnny Sweeney from second, capping the day's scoring.
Notable
Earning the Big South's first nine-inning complete game shutout of the season, Amp Phillips' outing Thursday in Upstate's Big South Tournament opener marked the first complete-game shutout in the tournament since Gardner-Webb's Joe Simone against UNC Asheville on May 25, 2022.
Earning the team's 34th victory of the season, Upstate's win total ties head coach Kane Sweeney for the winningest first-year head coach in program history, equalling the 1986 win total of John Daurity.
Hitting a solo shot in the sixth inning, Vance Sheahan improved his reached base streak to 44 games, extending the longest-known streak in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.).
Up Next for the SpartansFollowing its Big South Tournament opener, USC Upstate returns to action Friday morning as play at the event continues. The Spartans face No. 2 High Point at 11 a.m.

It was announced on Wednesday that they'll be premiering a new Spartans football series that appears to provide an inside look at Michigan State football. The Spartans' official social media account released a trailer video for the upcoming series that is set to premiere next week on Wednesday -- just two days before the Spartans open the 2025 season against Western Michigan. The show will be called "This is State" with the trailer including what appears to be footage from practice, interviews with players and coaches, and other off the field events surrounding the program. Check out the trailer video the social media post below: At the time of this post, there doesn't appear to be too much details behind the series other than that it will be only available to watch on YouTube. I'm personally fired up about this new series and excited to learn more about it in the coming days. This will certainly be a fun taste and teaser for the upcoming season next week, and hopefully will be something we get to follow throughout the season too. Braves Draft Buzz? Atlanta Predicted To Land 18-Home Run Star Infielder

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. This season hasn't really gone to plan for the Atlanta Braves. Instead of sitting at the top of the National League, the Braves are set to miss the postseason. Fortunately for them, the offseason will bring them a clean slate to start over next season. But Atlanta needs to build its foundation from the ground up over the next few years. This idea starts with having successful MLB Draft classes, especially since the Braves will likely pick at the top of the draft next year. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently put together an early mock draft for the 2026 MLB Draft and predicted the Braves would land star infielder Justin Lebron at pick No. 4. WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 11: A view of the Atlanta Braves logo on a baseball cap during the game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on September 11, 2024 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 11: A view of the Atlanta Braves logo on a baseball cap during the game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on September 11, 2024 in Washington, DC."After a loud true freshman season in which he hit .338/.429/.546 with 12 home runs, Lebron posted a 1.058 OPS with 18 doubles, 18 home runs and 72 RBI as a sophomore, though his strikeout rate jumped from 20.9 to 24.2 percent," Reuter wrote. "He can crush a mistake and has the tools to be a well-rounded offensive and defensive player. If he shows a more refined approach next spring, he will be a candidate to go No. 1 overall." Lebron is a very interesting prospect to look into. He's shown a willingness to swing and miss in order to generate his impressive power numbers, but it's not concerning enough to turn scouts off him. He's a good defender with solid speed and athleticism. If he continues to show improvements in his junior season, there's a chance he looks like a true five-tool prospect. At that point, he becomes a can't-miss prospect for the Braves at the top of the first round. More MLB: Reds' Elly De La Cruz Sends 3-Word Message On Quad Injury Concerns

Popular Big Ten analyst predicts breakout season for Michigan State QB Aidan Chiles

A popular college football personality has made a bold prediction in favor of the Spartans and starting quarterback Aidan Chiles. A well known Big Ten personality and analyst on social media is expecting big things from Chiles this season. Ben Stevens -- also known as Big Ten Ben -- put out a bold prediction on Wednesday in favor of Chiles having a monster season in 2025. He is predicting that Chiles will lead the Big Ten in passing yards. That's quite the statement from Stevens, and one that would certainly mean big things happened for the Spartans this season if it comes true. Chiles threw for just shy of 2,500 yards last year in his first season as a starter. For some perspective of what it would take to lead the league in passing yards, Ohio State's Will Howard threw for just over 4,000 yards last season. So it would probably take at least that total to lead the league in passing this year for Chiles. Do I think this is possible for Chiles? Yes, I actually do think it is possible. Now is it likely? No, it's not and that's why it's a fun eye-grabbing bold prediction from Stevens. Chiles will get his first crack at putting up some big passing numbers in the opener against Western Michigan next week. Kickoff for the opener between the Spartans and Broncos from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on August 29.
