Pradyot urges restraint as row erupts over DM's refusal to meet TIPRA Motha leaders
The party claimed that Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kumar Chakma, the first direct recruit to the IAS from the Chakma tribe - Tripura's fourth-largest indigenous group - had declined to meet with Pradyot Kishore and TTAADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia at his official residence in Udaipur on Sunday evening. The leaders had sought an audience to discuss urgent matters concerning welfare and development.
The incident triggered sharp political reactions and a social media backlash. Opposition leaders criticised the DM's conduct, with CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and Congress leader and former Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman accusing the BJP government of failing to rein in the bureaucracy.
Mr. Choudhury went so far as to compare the attitude of some senior civil servants in the State to British-era ICS officers. 'The BJP has emboldened bureaucrats to disregard public representatives and the people they serve,' he said.
TIPRA Motha supporters took to social media to voice their discontent, with some posts targeting the Chakma community as 'infiltrators' and accusing them of undermining the unity of Tripura's indigenous peoples.
Amid rising tensions, the party's youth wing issued a 76-hour ultimatum demanding the DM's removal, threatening to lock government offices in Gomati district if the demand was not met. The youth leaders also condemned what they termed 'disrespect' shown to the royal scion.
In a video message shared on Monday, Mr. Debbarman called for restraint. 'I appeal to all to behave reasonably and take things positively. I have support in the Chakma community as well. I love everyone irrespective of community identity,' he said.
Mr. Debbarman reiterated the need for unity among indigenous communities and cautioned against divisive rhetoric. 'We should not make this about any community,' he said.

Go to every home, understand people's problems, and work with the vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar,' he added. Wadettiwar said that the BJP alliance runs a looter government in Maharashtra. They have massive power, ED, and CBI at their disposal. Loot is rampant, and 40 per cent commission is being pocketed, he alleged. Senior leader and Congress Working Committee member Balasaheb Thorat said that the party has seen difficult times and defeats, yet it has risen again to victory. 'The current state government's functioning is appalling — assaults happen inside the Assembly, legislators brawl in the canteen, gunfire takes place, and corruption is rampant. We must take up issues close to the public's heart — banking, farmers' concerns, and the large-scale corruption in NAFED. Work on these issues and the people will stand with us,' he commented. Thorat assured, adding that Congress will bring governments that uphold its ideology and the Constitution.

These people are following an ideology created by the British.' The incident took place at the centuries-old tomb of Nawab Abu Samad. On Monday, a group of Hindu activists staged a protest outside the structure, alleging that it was built after demolishing a Hindu temple. They reportedly sought permission from the district administration to conduct prayers at the site. Video clips circulating on social media show members of Hindu organisations vandalising parts of the mausoleum and hoisting saffron flags on it. The visuals have sparked outrage among the local Muslim community and political opposition. Following the unrest, police deployed tight security around the site to prevent further escalation. The administration is said to be investigating the matter, though tensions remain high. Yadav also pointed out that Fatehpur has witnessed similar communal incidents in the past, recalling that a mosque in the district was earlier demolished for being 'illegal' on the grounds that its construction map had not been approved. Minister Kapil Dev stated that the Uttar Pradesh administration is fulfilling its responsibilities and emphasised that no individual will be permitted to take the law into their own hands. Minister Nand Kishor Gurjar commented on the controversy surrounding the site, asserting that there was no tomb originally present there. He claimed that the structures were built after the 17th century and linked their existence to the historical persecution of Hindus and the destruction of temples. He acknowledged that the recent vandalism was a reaction to that history, saying, 'Ideally, such actions should have been carried out through proper administrative channels. While those involved were not bad people, the act should have been conducted within the framework of the law.'

ULFA, NSCN factions call for boycott of Independence Day in Northeast
GUWAHATI: The Paresh Baruah-led United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) and the Yung Aung faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) have called for the boycott of the Independence Day. In a joint statement, the two insurgent groups said this 'so-called' celebration of freedom holds no significance for the indigenous people of Western South East Asia (WESEA) – region straddling parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur. They alleged that 'colonial' India gave nothing to the indigenous people of WESEA other than deceit, humiliation, exploitation and oppression. 'The British imperialists exploited, repressed and deprived this region and similarly, for the past 79 years, colonial India has maintained an even more pervasive domination in the name of independence,' the statement alleged. The outfits said the highlight of their protest on August 15 would be a total bandh in WESEA. They appealed to people to extend their support to make the bandh successful. The ULFA-I and the NSCN's Wung Aung faction call for the boycott of India's Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations every year. But despite the boycott call, people go out in large numbers to take part in the celebrations.
