Ringgit Ends Lower Vs Greenback Following BNM's GDP Forecast Revision

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The ringgit ended easier against the US dollar today, as traders' sentiment was affected by Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) gross domestic product (GDP) revision for the year.
At 6 pm, the local note slid to 4.2275/2345 versus the greenback from last Friday's close of 4.2195/2245.
The central bank has revised Malaysia's 2025 GDP growth to 4.0-4.8 per cent from 4.5-5.5 per cent previously, and similarly, the inflation rate for 2025 is projected to range between 1.5 per cent and 2.3 per cent from the previous forecast of 2.0-3.5 per cent.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the BNM is being pragmatic by adjusting the growth forecast lower, taking into account external risks.
At the same time, a lower inflation forecast suggests that the impact from the anticipated RON95 subsidies rationalisation is likely to be manageable.
'As such, we foresee this will be positive for the ringgit in the mid- to long-term as fiscal consolidation will continue to take place, resulting in more fiscal space which can be redirected into targeted assistance as well as higher development expenditure (DE).
'This Thursday, the government will announce the 13th Malaysia Plan, and we foresee a higher allocation for DE in the next five years to drive the Malaysian economy into high-income status,' he said to Bernama.
Meanwhile, he noted that the US Dollar Index (DXY) has strengthened, buoyed by optimism over the upcoming US-China trade talks.

Ageing assets a challenge, says army chief

LENGGONG: The Malaysian Army is grappling with the challenges of maintaining ageing assets but remains operationally ready through a meticulous maintenance regime. Army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan said that current assets, particularly vehicles, were legacy systems that have been in service for years. "There are definitely challenges because we are managing legacy assets. Many of our assets, like vehicles and so on, are already quite old. "But we practise a very meticulous maintenance system, so that their readiness is always at least at a satisfactory level, allowing us to carry out our core duties and responsibilities," he said. He said this during a press conference after attending the closing ceremony of Exercise Keris Strike Series 30/2025, a trilateral military cooperation between the United States Army Pacific Command and the Australian Army held at Felda Lawin Selatan here today. Looking ahead, he said the army was realigning its development strategies under the 4NextG 2021–2025 transformation plan, now integrated with the national defence vision for a Future Force. "We are reassessing the capabilities that should be prioritised as we move toward becoming a Future Force," he said. However, Hafizuddeain admitted that budgetary constraints remain a significant hurdle. "Of course, we don't have the financial allocation to make many acquisitions. So, we have to carefully refine every capability development plan according to priorities," he said. He said the army has a comprehensive "wish list" of needed upgrades and acquisitions, but each item must be evaluated based on strategic importance and alignment with future defence goals. "We have to prioritise each item according to the direction of the Future Force, in line with the other services such as the navy and the air force," he said. On the exercise, 4,000 Malaysian soldiers, 233 personnel from the United States Army Pacific Command (USARPAC), and 151 professionals from the Australian Army took part in the drills from July 17 to 29. In his closing speech, Hafizuddeain said the primary aim of the exercise was to enhance interoperability and the ability to operate jointly and seamlessly. "Through a comprehensive series of engagements, including the staff exercise, command post exercise, and field training exercise, we have significantly strengthened the operational cohesion between our three forces. "Guided by the theme, 'Strengthening Partnerships, Enhancing Readiness, ' I am pleased to report that the exercise has successfully achieved all its intended objectives," he said. He added that one of the highlights this year was the first-ever combined live-firing exercise involving the Astros II MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) from the Malaysian Army and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) from the United States Army. "It was not just a show of firepower. It was a demonstration of trust and integration. Two systems, two countries, one mission, to defend peace, deter threats, and stand ready," he said.

110 Sarawakian Students Receive Petronas Education Sponsorships

KUCHING, July 29 (Bernama) -- A total of 110 Sarawakian students received Petronas education sponsorships totalling RM28 million to pursue their tertiary studies at top universities locally and abroad. These students who excelled in 2024 Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) examination received the flagship Petronas Powering Knowledge education sponsorship drawn from nearly 9,000 applicants, and they were selected for their academic excellence, leadership potential, and active involvement in co-curricular activities. They will be pursuing studies in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, economics, law, and other industry-related courses at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and other leading local and overseas universities in the United Kingdom and Australia. Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah presented the awards on behalf of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at a ceremony held here today. Also present was Petronas senior general manager (human capital expertise) Akmal Niza Ahmad. In her speech, Fatimah, on behalf of the state government, thanked Petronas for their continuous support and commitment to developing Sarawakian talent. 'The relationship between Petronas and Sarawak is long-standing and deeply rooted, and the efforts by the former consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the true value of human capital,' she said. The minister said that by investing in the education and development of Sarawakian youth, Petronas is also helping the state to lay the foundation for a future that is resilient, competitive and inclusive. 'This aligns strongly with the state's Post-COVID Development Strategy, which aims to position Sarawak as a high-income and developed state by 2030. 'At the heart of this vision is our focus on building talent and expanding opportunities across all levels of education -- from early childhood to tertiary, from academic pathways to technical and vocational training,' Fatimah said.

JENDELA Phase 2 Begins September With Hybrid Approach, Says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- The second phase of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) plan is expected to commence in September, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said. He said the initiative, which involves nearly 3,000 sites nationwide, will no longer rely solely on the construction of conventional telecommunication towers. Instead, a hybrid approach will be adopted to expedite deployment. 'For phase two, we do not intend to build traditional towers alone, as some areas requiring coverage may not need a 76-metre or 60-metre tower. A 30-metre monopole might suffice, so a more hybrid solution is being considered, which we expect will speed up implementation,' he said. Fahmi was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Larry Sng Wei Shien (PBM–Julau) during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today, who asked when the second phase of JENDELA would begin. In reply to Sng's main question regarding 4G and 5G internet coverage in the Julau parliamentary constituency, particularly at rural schools that still face connectivity challenges, Fahmi said that 4G coverage in populated areas of Julau has reached 58.28 per cent He said that the expansion of internet coverage in rural and remote schools is being carried out under the JENDELA plan. 'As of June 30, 43 out of 48 new communication towers have been completed and are operational, while 44 out of 45 transmitter stations have been upgraded. Additionally, 1,391 premises have been equipped with fibre-optic access,' he added. On 5G connectivity, Fahmi said implementation in Julau remains under consideration, as priority is currently given to densely populated and industrial areas. 'Nonetheless, 5G coverage will be extended to rural areas, including Julau, in stages based on need and infrastructure readiness,' he said.
