Zojila tunnel completion delayed by over 2 years, Nitin Gadkari tells Lok Sabha
Union Minister for Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday that the tunnel will now be completed by February 2028, when it was previously scheduled to be ready by September 29, 2026. Previously, the government has said the average travel time to cross the Zojila pass, which sometimes takes three hours at present, will come down to 20 minutes once the tunnel is ready.
'The project has been delayed due to multiple factors, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a terrorist attack at the Sonamarg Tunnel Project, and extreme adverse weather conditions,' Gadkari said in a reply to J&K National Conference MP Mian Altaf Ahmed Larvi from Anantnag-Rajouri constituency.
The total cost of the project is Rs. 6809 crore, out of which an expenditure of Rs. 3934.42 crore has been incurred so far, with current physical progress standing at 64%, the minister added.
As part of his reply, Gadkari added a total of 1,141 individuals are currently employed in the project. Of these, 77% are from Jammu & Kashmir, and 28% of the overall workforce is from the Ganderbal district.
These details emerge after the Z-Morh tunnel at Sonamarg, another crucial part of the all-weather road connection between Srinagar
and Leh, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in January.
Currently, Ladakh does not have all-weather road connectivity with other parts of India. Both the Srinagar-Leh axis road and the Manali-Leh road are also subject to weather-related closures for five-six months of the year.
The completion of the Zojila tunnel will not only be helpful in uninterrupted traffic flow between Srinagar and Ladakh for civilian purposes but also help military mobility and logistics support for deployed forces in the Ladakh sector.

He highlighted the nation's progress, saying that during the last 11 years, 34,000 km of new railway tracks have been installed under the PM Narendra Modi administration, averaging almost 12 km per day. He described the 1,300 railway stations undergoing renovation as an unprecedented endeavour in the history of Indian Railways. PM Modi's Vision Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed out that India is implementing this change while maintaining train operations and keeping stations operational, which reflects the scope of PM Modi's vision, in contrast to developed nations, where station redevelopment entails completely stopping services. Adding further, he cited the introduction of contemporary trains such as the Vande Bharat Express, the Amrit Bharat Express, and the Namo Bharat Express. Eight Amrit Bharat trains with high-class amenities and reasonably priced tickets have been introduced thus far. According to the minister, passengers have responded favorably to these new trains, which were constructed using cutting-edge technology. With the help of double-engine governments in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, significant railway projects are also progressing in those states, in addition to Gujarat, the minister highlighted. Metro corridor expansion gains pace in Hyderabad's Old City, pillar marking begins: Official

A Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) survey has also been completed to finalise pillar and station locations while avoiding disturbance to historical or sensitive Benchmark (TBM) points have been established to aid survey and construction during the execution further stated that arrangements are being made to shift underground sewerage, water pipelines, stormwater drains, and overhead power lines in areas where pillars and stations will come up. In line with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's directives, all overhead electricity lines along the corridor will be converted to underground cabling, he added.

IOB disburses Rs 202.65 crore in loans to SHGs, farmers at outreach programme in TN''s Thanjavur
Indian Overseas Bank said it disbursed loans worth Rs 202.65 crore to 2,634 beneficiaries during a mega Self-Help Group and agriculture outreach programme held in Thanjavur.
