Edinburgh woman's 'incredible' time on Netflix set to offer her unique expertise

An Edinburgh womans unique experience led her to the set of the newly-released Netflix series Department Q.
Heather Muir, a contact lens technician at independent practice in the capital, played a behind-the-scenes role in the show - which was filmed in and around Edinburgh. A 'seasoned expert' in handling contact lenses, Heather was brought on for specalist support.
She worked closely with actors and makeup artists for the series, with hit Netflix on Thursday, April 29. The thriller show follows a former top detective who takes on a cold- case, transforming an Edinburgh basement into a 'well-oiled machine' filled with misfit officers.
Heather commented on her experience while on set, saying: "It was an incredible experience to collaborate with such a talented production team.
"Blending medical expertise with the creative world of television was a unique opportunity, and it was a memorable experience to be on location with the production team."

Heather works with Cameron Optometry, and also worked on Guillermo Del Toro's latest blockbuster which was filmed in Edinburgh.
Department Q features plenty of familiar faces from shows such as Downton Abbey, Shetland and Call the Midwife. You'll spot the likes of Matthew Goode, Kelly MacDonald, Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne and Jamie Sives.
Filming for the series took place in early 2024, with cast and crew descending on spots around the city including housing estates in Wester Hailes, City Chambers, and The Signet Library.

Leah Byrne, who plays Rose, spoke exclusively to Reach about her experience on set with fellow actor Alexej Manvelov, who plays Akram.
Speaking about the abundance of Scottish talent on the show, she said: "It was so cool, such a joy for me. I'm from Glasgow so I just had to nip down the road and we were filming this amazing show.
"But it's so authentically Scottish as well. It doesn't feel like it's trying to be something it's not. It doesn't have to try hard and it's just in its blood."

I saw Beluga Lagoon live at Glasgow's Kelvingrove Bandstand
BELUGA Lagoon brought a party to Kelvongrove Park on Sunday Night. For a band whose music is based in folklore and encapsulates all things wild in Scotland, the Bandstand was a perfect fit. The booming vocals, stunning harmonies and thickly layered instrumentals of the eight-piece band carried through the park as they took the crowd on a journey. Founded by Scottish wildlife film-maker, Andrew O'Donnell, Beluga Lagoon conjure up music "inspired by the great outdoors." And Andrew couldn't look more at home as he beamed at the front of the stage, enveloped in the lush green canopy of the park's trees. The band swelled into life, with Misty Munro FM building up the crowd for a set that would have them dancing all night. He joked: "You ready for some dancing, aye? Just watch yourselves on the steps, I don't want anyone phoning Digby Brown on me." And with his battle-cry-esque wailing, the song and the crowd burst into life — people ceilidh dancing and bouncing from the front to the back. Andrew's voice is incredible. He plays several different instruments and goes from guttural, shanty-like wails to sweet, soaring harmonies. His talent is matched by his energy on stage - you can tell how much he and the band are enjoying themselves. (Image: Newsquest) Beluga Lagoon work their way through the sonic landscapes of their songs as each one ebbs and flows like living, breathing creatures. Stopping for a brief intermission after a meander through old and new material, Andrew opens the second half with help from support act Kirsteen Harvey. Glasgow-based Kirsteen had warmed up the crowd with an angelic, stripped-back acoustic set featuring songs written for family and shaped by her upbringing - she bares her heart on stage as she sings. A highlight from her was a stunning rendition of Billy Connolly's I Wish I Was in Glasgow, which prompted a sing-along. Kirsteen joined Andrew to harmonise on Beluga's track Coping on My Own, adding a delicious bit of depth to the haunting tune. Andrew joked after having a laugh and a twirl on stage, saying: "We've been practising that choreography for weeks!" The only falter he had the whole show was forgetting some lines in one song, but he recovered well and said: "Sorry, I was struggling there, bloody weird lyrics... wit am a like?!" You could feel the warmth and joy pulsing from the band as they played tune after tune. Andrew's dad, Jim, even stole the limelight at one point, belting out his best Lulu impression. The crowd was a perfect mix for this kind of family fun, and they lapped up the antics while the sky grew darker and the orange hue of the sky added to the ambience. The crowd cheered and danced while singing every word of the TikTok-famous tune back to them. After a brief walk-off, they retook the stage for the encore, which rounded off the night with fan-favourite Margo & Barry. As the lights faded down and the crowd shuffled out of the park, groups were chanting choruses and basking in the leafy leftovers of a band that is no doubt about to head to bigger stages. But, with a sound so steeped in the essence of Scotland, the Bandstand stage is one they'll always fit like a big green glove.

Stephen West and his fiancée Emma Bradley have welcomed a daughter named Eden, but 71-year-old Rose, who is serving a whole life order, will never see the baby after her son cut off all ties with his evil mother. Stephen and Emma got together despite concerns raised by her family members, given he was jailed in 2004 for seven counts of underage sex with a 14-year-old girl. The 51-year-old, who grew up in his parents' house of horrors, once admitted: "There's a bit of my dad in me." His evil father, Fred West, was a serial killer who committed at least 12 murders between 1967 and 1987 - mostly with his second wife, Rose - in Gloucestershire. He was found dead in his prison cell in 1995. Stephen's mother Rose, who has already spent nearly 30 years in prison, is said to have abandoned her attempts to appeal her conviction in 2001 and is understood to be resigned to dying behind bars. Now, sources have told The Sun that Stephen and Emma are planning to tie the knot in August at the Celtic Manor hotel in Newport. However, an insider has claimed that none of Emma's relatives supports their union, saying Stephen makes them "uncomfortable" and adding this has created "a rift" in the family. Emma, a qualified nurse who works at Gloucester Royal Hospital, also has two daughters from a previous relationship. Following reports that Rose is in ill health and has been moved to a disabled room in prison "because she can barely walk," Emma said she and her partner were unaware of it as they are not in contact. While admitting that she and Stephen have watched the new Netflix documentary Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story, Emma said her fiancé "doesn't want to say anything because his main priority is the little ones." She added: "He is adamant, at this time of his life he's got a young family to protect." Stephen, who is a grandad, has been married twice before and now has eight children. Speaking about Rose's daily life in prison, a source told The Sun: "She never really leaves the wing she's held on and is escorted all the time by prison officers if she goes anywhere. Sometimes she sits in the communal areas on her own. No one talks to her because everyone knows who she is and what she did, even if she has changed her name. When I was there, she tried to make friends with the other women and gave them gifts, like vapes, but she was rejected. She likes to watch nature documentaries on the TV in her cell, especially ones about birds." In the hope of distancing herself from her evil crimes, West reportedly paid £36 to change her name to Jennifer Jones. It's understood she changed her name by deed poll in December last year and told friends it's her way of moving on. However, everyone knows her real identity at the women-only HMP New Hall near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. Some inmates spurn her attempts at friendship, and she often eats tomato soup in her cell alone for breakfast, before spending most of her time in her cell knitting and talking to the TV, because she can barely walk. West is now being held in a special unit at New Hall known as Rivendell House, where 30 prisoners each have an en-suite cell and are allocated a laptop which they can use to order food from. The communal areas are also said to be "more inviting" than other blocks in the prison, according to inspection reports.

Ncuti Gatwa reveals real reason behind Doctor Who exit as fans suspect it 'wasn't planned'
Doctor Who fans were left shocked during Saturday's night finale of the BBC show when Ncuti Gatwa left his role as the Doctor after just two series and regenerated into old fan favourite Billie Piper. Doctor Who's star Ncuti Gatwa is set to go down in the beloved sci-fi shows' 62 year history for many reasons - one of them being as one of the few actors who served the shortest time in his role as the Doctor. After just two series of the iconic drama, the Scottish-Rwandan actor shared with fans that he was stepping down from his role as the Time Lord. Ncuti cited the reason he quit was due to the physical and mental demands of the show, especially on his lead character, but fans believe his exit was not a planned one despite what the Sex Education star has told the media. The 32-year-old has now been replaced by the iconic Billie Piper, who previously starred in the BBC drama as Rose Tyler alongside former doctor Christopher Ecclestone, who only lasted one series. Piper also starred in the 2006 series with David Tennant. Ncuti recorded a video explanation for his fans after his exit was aired in the Doctor Who season 15 finale on Saturday May 31. He said: "It's a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally. The actors playing the Doctor are only actors playing the Doctor. Unfortunately, we are mere mortals. "I would love to have the energy and the youth to be able to do this full time for the rest of my life, but my knees are telling me it's time." However, die-hard fans believe there is another reason behind his exit, the Mirror reports. Taking to X, one fan named Mr Tardis had clearly done their research as they wrote: "In October 2024, Ncuti Gatwa was on 'The Graham Norton Show' saying he was going to be filming another series of DW next year. "In June 2025, he officially leaves the show and regenerates. This was never the plan. What a shame. He deserved so much better." Another echoed: "In situations like that, they'll often shoot two different alternative scenes: one where the series continues, and one to finish things off. "Ncuti may well have actually thought he'd be staying on back in October 2024, even after filming a regeneration scene just in case." A third fan was left disappointed with the news of his exit as they wrote: "I am so f****g sad. its one thing to see your doctor regenerate because they chose to, another to see it happen because of behind the scenes s**t. "I loved literally every episode this era. I've been defending it the whole time. this.. this kinda broke me." Adding to his exit speech, Ncuti said: "You know when you get cast, at some point, you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. "This journey has been one that I will never forget and a role that will be part of me forever. He added: "There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe." The former Doctor Who star continued: "The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can't thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience. "I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor." Meanwhile showrunner Russell T. Davies also expressed his sadness over Ncuti's decision to step down. He expressed: "What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights." He added: "Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the Tardis, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. "After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!" A spokesperson for Doctor Who declined to comment.
