Games Inbox: Is it weird to not like GTA games?

Metro13-05-2025

The Tuesday letters page is surprised to learn that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a hit, as one reader worries about the negative effects of GTA 6.

Minority opinion
With all this discussion of GTA 6 I really feel like the odd one out, because I've never really liked any of them. I recognised GTA 3 as an important breakthrough for open world games, and I liked the soundtrack of Vice City, but I soon got bored of their repetitive missions and terrible controls and action.
GTA 4 didn't seem to be much better and by the time of GTA 5 I was not only bored of the concept, but I'd begun to find its smug worship of violence and cruelty to be really off-putting. Maybe that's just me being a parent now but I certainly won't want my kid playing the games.
I realise I'm in the minority on this, and I'm definitely not telling anyone else not to enjoy it, but to me GTA celebrates the worse in humanity in general and America specifically, and that's not really the kind of kick I need right. Call me weird but I'd rather play something a bit more optimistic.
Penfold
There are dozens of us
I have tried on many occasions to play and enjoy GTA over the decades but failed every time. The games get great reviews but just leave me cold. I just don't get it. I won't be getting GTA 6 even if it gets scored 11 out of 10 when reviewed.
I suspect it continues to sell for years after initial release due to parents relenting when they feel their child is old enough to play it. However, I wonder if the game is played just superficially in most of these cases.

Multiplayer from From
I can't tell you how disappointed I was to find out that The Duskbloods was a multiplayer game. I only found out a few days later, because they never said in the trailer, and it was such a downer. What worries me is that From's next game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is also a multiplayer game.
Maybe it's just a coincidence, and I think Nightreign is a much smaller and cheaper game, but that is going to make the gap between Elden Ring and whatever's next even bigger. Elden Ring was over three years ago now and I am really beginning to miss a big chunky FromSoftware single-player game. But I don't know when that will happen or what it will be.

The future is now
As bad as it is to hear about these Switch 2 Game-Key cards and Doom: The Dark Ages not having anything on the disc I do think it's far too late to start complaining about these things now. If only 10% of people are buying physical now then the battle has already been lost, a long time ago.
I realise a lot of people reading this are probably in that 10% but it's time for us to face facts and admit the war is lost. People want to buy digitally, even though that's worse in about a dozen different ways, and publishers are very glad to encourage it, because it means more profit for them and no second-hand market.
This has been obvious for a long time, but it's happened slowly enough that I think physical fans haven't realised just how lopsided it's got. But unfortunately this new generation is going to be the first where physical sales are almost irrelevant. You can quote the £75 price tag all you like but most people are going to be buying Mario Kart World for £67 on digital, not paying extra for the cartridge.
Personally, I think it's madness that people preferred not having to get up to change discs above owning their games and being able to sell them on, but here we are. The genie is out of the bottle now and there's no putting it back in.

Oblivion on the regular
I definitely agree with the performance issues of the Oblivion remaster. After 40 hours of play I'm getting frequent crashes that shut the game down and go back to the Xbox home screen.
This wasn't a problem before but it's happening pretty regularly now. It hasn't hurt things that much, it auto saves for me each and every time I go into a new area, but something is clearly wrong with it. It's not going to stop me playing but they really need to fix it.
Nick The Greek
Old and improved
A remaster of GTA 4 as a stopgap for GTA 6 sounds like a pretty good idea but can we please manage something better than the terrible GTA Trilogy collection? That was the laziest, low quality thing I've ever seen Rockstar put their name to and it makes me worried about any other remaster they release.
One reader said that GTA 4 had the best story of any of the games and I'd say that's probably true. It definitely was better than GTA 5, which had a lot of cool moments and characters but no real plot.
The problem with GTA 4 though is that the action was really bad. The fighting, the shooting, and the driving would not have been tolerated in other game, if it were not GTA. If there is a remaster then all three of these things need to be changed, but I'm not sure Rockstar would be willing to admit there was that much of a problem.
Recently, we've seen a lot of remasters and remakes that have really changed and improved the original games and GTA 4 needs to be one of them, because as it stands, I just don't think it's aged well.
On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd really change anything about Max Payne 3. That game was sorely underrated and all it needs is a light dusting, in terms of frame rate and resolution. Although I'll never understand why they didn't use the combat from Max Payne 3 in GTA 4. They were both Rockstar games.

Success Expedition
I just want to say that in a world of delayed games, rushed games with bugs, and prices going through the roof, that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the greatest games I've played in a very long time.
I hope it is successful in sales, although I doubt it will be.
Dazj1985 (PSN ID)
GC: Surprising as it might seem, the game has been an instant hit and sold 2 million copies in 12 days.
A high tide beaches all boats
I'm no industry expert but I'm not sure I understand these arguments about GTA 5 saving the games industry when it comes out. I get the high tide raising all boats argument but that's just an old truism, and it isn't always accurate.
I think it's far more likely to have an overall negative effect. I'm sure the game will be great, and make billions for Take-Two, but everyone else is going to be scrabbling for peanuts in comparison. Everything coming out next spring is going to be horribly rushed and full of bugs, just to get it out of the door before GTA 6, and then when is anyone going to risk releasing something big? June? July? August? September?
The only positive is that not much is usually released in the summer months anyway, so this isn't going to create a massive crater during Christmas, or is it? If the game is as good as people hope is there any reason to think it won't still be selling by the end of the year too? Will people really stop playing GTA 6 to buy yet another Call Of Duty?
I wouldn't bet on it, and even when things do slow down the new GTA Online will be taking a huge chunk out of everyone's time and money. It's not Rockstar's fault, they're not doing anything wrong from their point of view, but I think GTA 6 is only going to reinforce the massive gap between the half dozen live service games that people play constantly and everything else.
Cubby
Inbox also-ransFor fans of video game anniversaries it was the 20th anniversary of the reveal of the Xbox 360 on Monday. As I remember it was some kind of weird pre-recorded thing with Elijah Woods. Time flies, huh?
Focus
I'm surprised to hear talk of a Devil May Cry remake. I'm not against it but I thought Devil May Cry 5 did well? I don't understand why we still haven't heard about a new game.
Robin
GC: It sold 10 million copies, so it did very well for what it is. We imagine there's problems behind the scenes, not least the fact that director Hideaki Itsuno left Capcom last year. More Trending

Harry Potter legend confirms return to franchise 14 years after final film

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, is returning as his iconic character in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Felton, 37, is set to join the cast at New York's Lyric Theatre beginning November 11 for a strictly limited 19-week engagement. The casting marks the first time a major film star from the original Harry Potter series has portrayed their character in a professional stage production of The Cursed Child, the hit play based on J.K. Rowling's books. 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life,' Felton said in a statement. 'Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in 'Cursed Child' this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.' 'It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes — and of course his iconic platinum blond hair — and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world,' he added. 'I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.' More Trending Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the highest-grossing non-musical play in Broadway history, selling more than 10million tickets worldwide since its premiere in London in 2016. Set 19 years after the final book, The Cursed Child follows Harry Potter's son, Albus, as he struggles with the weight of his family's legacy – and forms an unexpected bond with Draco Malfoy's son, Scorpius. Felton will portray Draco as an older man grappling with fatherhood and his complicated past. It also has productions running currently in London, New York, Hamburg, and Tokyo. Race Across The World fans moved as episode honours Sam Gardiner

Race Across the World fans have shared how moved they were after last night's episode memorialised the late Sam Gardiner. Gardiner, 24,died after a car crash on the A34 in Gatley, Greater Manchester, on Monday, May 26 2025. The landscape gardener appeared on series 2 of the show, where he travelled across Mexico and Argentina with his mother, Jo. Ultimately, the pair placed fourth in the race after being forced to drop out when they exhausted their travel budget. At the end of last night's episode, the first to air since the former contestant's death, the programme paid tribute to him with a memorial card shown after the credits had rolled. The card showed Sam in his Race Across The World gear and a caption that read 'In loving memory of Sam Gardiner. 2000-2025.' Following the tribute, fans flocked to social media to share their feelings. @traceywalker82 wrote on X, 'Lovely tribute to Sam at the end.' @kevwgs added, 'Rest in peace to Sam Gardiner, who took part in series 2 with his Mum, Jo, back in 2020.' Meanwhile, on the Race Across The World section of Reddit, miss-mercatale wrote, 'Poignant moment with the tribute at the end to Sam.' Plenty of other fans shared crying and sad emoji faces. Greater Manchester police confirmed Gardiner's car was involved in a 'single vehicle collision' which resulted in his car leaving the road and rolling over before landing on its side. Emergency services attended the scene where it was discovered Sam had suffered serious head injuries and he was taken to hospital for treatment. Sadly, Sam later died of his injuries on May 29. After his son's death, Sam's father, Andrew, paid tribute to his son in a statement. 'We are devastated by the loss of our beloved son Sam in a terrible accident. 'Sam left us far too soon, and whilst words will never fully capture the light, joy and energy he brought into our lives, we hold on to the memories that made him so special. 'Sam was adored by his family. As a son, brother and nephew, he was loyal, funny and fiercely protective.' Race Across The World fans were devastated by the news when it broke, with many offering the Gardiner family their condolences. More Trending 'Absolutely heartbreaking! A wonderful mother and son duo…. Thinking of Jo right now. Rest easy Sam,' wrote @RachelW86529886 on X. @DavideMahomes added, 'Terrible news, I thought they were a great pairing in the series'. I loved watching his and Jo's race and their story and relationship develop 'as the series progressed. Thinking of Jo and the rest of Sam's family', @nickh1000 wrote. Got a story? Games Inbox: What are your Nintendo Switch 2 first impressions?

The Thursday letters page reacts to Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and the Sony State of Play, as readers prepare for the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Early access As one of your Aussie readers I'm pretty sure I technically got the Switch 2 before anyone in Europe, so I thought I'd write in with my in-depth observations after half an hour with it. First off, this is definitely a Switch 2 but bigger. Secondly, I'm perfectly fine with that. The new Joy-Cons are definitely an improvement, the mouse controls work great, and the magnet thing is pretty cool. Other than that, there's not really much to say about the console itself, other than the dock is surprisingly heavy. As for Mario Kart World, I've only played around in the open world a bit and done one track but it looks really nice. The size of the open world looks really impressive and I like there being so many opponents at once, and all the weird obstacles and traffic in your way. Maybe all the British sites should've come here to review it. Sounds like they would've got more time with it than Nintendo gave them before launch. Coops Unexpected Play So that State of Play was not what I expected at all: no Resident Evil 9, no new Sony games, almost no live service games… I have no complaints, it was pretty good, but considering the way they announced it, as a troll to Nintendo, I didn't predict that a Marvel fighting game by Arc System Works would end up being the mic drop at the end. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. It looked good but that Sony guy talking about the difficulty of finding a developer to make it… really? I mean Capcom are right there at the beginning of your showcase. I won't deny I'd still prefer Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 but I'm definitely interested in this too. And a new Lumines game and Nioh 3? I definitely did not predict that, but I am all for them. So overall, a good but strange showcase. I'm not sure why it deserved such a last minute annoucement, and I very much doubt that'd going to make anyone think twice about buying a Switch 2, but it's all good. Korbie Bond is not back? I'm not really convinced by that first James Bond trailer. There's no way they didn't design the character to look exactly like Tom Holland and that is the last person I'd want playing Bond in real life. It's okay, I'm not against it so far, but at the same time I'm not blown away. There was something about the graphics too… they weren't really photorealistic, more like something from a Telltale Game or something. I dunno, there was just something off about it all. Maybe it'll be okay but there were no real jokes in the trailer and somehow I doubt they're going to portray Bond as a boozing, womanising, smartass. But if they don't, what's the point? Other than the product placement, of course. Purple Ranger Email your comments to: gamecentral@ Today's the day Well, I've taken off the day and assuming you show this on Thursday I will be impatiently waiting at home, hoping that the postman is going to knock at the door with my Switch 2 at any minute. Whatever else happens, there's nothing quite like a new console launch for excitement, as far as I'm concerned, and even though I'm only getting one game (I'll let you guess which one) it looks really good and I can't wait. Here's to hoping it's all been worth the money and the wait, and that I'll be playing Mario Kart World with fans around the world all weekend! Gorf Rental only Just a quick heads up for anyone buying the Arcade Archives 2 version of Ridge Racer. If you have access to purchase it on a Nintendo Switch 1 or 2 and have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack then you have access to Ridge Racer 64, which features tracks from the original Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution, along with original N64 tracks, so arguably represents better value. The only issue with Nintendo Switch Online games is they can't be purchased outright, which seems very odd to me as Nintendo could still have the Switch Online service and simultaneously allow for games to be brought individually. Nintendo just seems to be leaving money on the table because there are quite a few games I would like to purchase. Charlie H. Big surprise I think the new RoboCop expansion is going the right route by concentrating on the action this time and not so much the other bits. I really enjoyed Rogue City but it was a little slow in places. When I played it on New Game+, fully boosting Murphy's auto pistol, I haven't felt so overpowered since walking around with the golden gun on GoldenEye 007 in cheat mode, but it felt good in an overpowered RoboCop kind of way. Tomorrow I'll be coming off the night shift and dropping my car off at the garage at lunch time for a service, no doubt tired out and in zombie mode, then watching my phone as I've ordered my Switch 2 delivery to the local post office and I'll be anticipating collecting it. I've got it coming with Mario Kart World. I've dodged all your previews and any videos of the game, just so I can go in blind and not know what to expect. I had the console ordered since mid-May and didn't want to get too excited for it. If anyone ever saw those episodes of South Park where Cartman gets himself cryogenically frozen because he can't stand to the thought of having to wait for the Wii release date, I didn't want that to happen to me getting too excited about it. Hopefully my car pick-up time won't be too late, so I can get home and get going, shifting the data from my Switch to the new one. I'm really looking forward to it. My son doesn't know I'm getting the Switch 2 this week. It's going to be pretty exciting as he's a Mario Kart addict. Nick The Greek Secret plans I wonder if the whole thing around day one updates and not releasing any Switch 2s and Mario Kart World to the press for reviews partly links with what happens in the open world section of Mario Kart? Perhaps they are planning to integrate open online events which have a big impact on the game, or something similar that would not be available until 5th June? Or perhaps not…we will find out soon enough. Elliott GC: This is an excellent thought and something we'd pondered ourselves, even though there's no sign of it so far. There are clearly plans for DLC though, even from little details like some major characters having half a dozen costumes but others, like Donkey Kong, only one. The Xbox timeline I was reading another letter about Microsoft's failings with the Xbox and nodding along in agreement when I had a thought: what would have happened if Microsoft had 'won' the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 generation by a mile instead? The last decade or so has seen Microsoft make some big and crazy decisions in an effort to play catch-up and, as we know, they haven't really worked. They have had massive amounts of cash to throw at the problem, and this has worked to some degree, as they have remained competitive and are now the biggest publisher in the world. However, if Sony had been lagging a long way behind, then what would they have done without the purchasing power and backing of Microsoft Corp.? I fear they would have struggle to compete without the same massive financial clout of Microsoft and potentially would have gone the way of Sega and stopped making consoles altogether. If that was the case, then I'd like to think that they still would've been able to churn out the (mostly) brilliant single-player offerings. Microsoft have kept Sony honest, at least. Although, it is an odd one to think that Sony still haven't really done much the last few years, so maybe they haven't kept them as honest as we all would have liked! How do you think it all would have played out in the darkest timeline, GC? NatorDom Currently playing: God of War: Ragnarök and – hopefully – Mario Kart World later today… GC: Well, you would've seen the concept of digital ownership disappear a lot quicker. But ironically Microsoft probably wouldn't have ended up buying Activision Blizzard or Bethesda, because they wouldn't have needed them. Inbox also-ransAll the fuss about Mario Kart World's price, it's a bargain compared to what Virtua Racing on the Sega Mega Drive cost me back in 1992. That was just my random gaming thought of the day. Mark Matthews You know what, there was more stuff in that State of Play that got me salivating than anything I've seen of the Switch 2 and I don't even have a PlayStation! (granted most of it was multiformat). And I say that as a lifelong Nintendo fan. big boy bent More Trending Email your comments to: gamecentral@ The small print New Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend.
