India scrambles to plug defence gaps after Pakistan clash

India's military is racing to rebuild its depleted arsenal and overhaul its air defence systems, even approving $12.3 billion of purchases a mere month after its conflict with Pakistan, according to Bloomberg.
This news comes right as India's deputy army chief claimed on Friday that China provided Pakistan with 'live inputs' during their deadly four-day conflict in May.
This stark revelation that has laid bare India's vulnerabilities in fighting what officials now say was a two-front battle.
Speaking at a defence industry event in New Delhi, Lieutenant General Rahul Singh said, 'When DGMO-level talks were going on, Pakistan… said 'We know your such-and-such important vector is primed.' He was getting live inputs from China.'
The statement was India's clearest public admission yet that Beijing's real-time intelligence - alongside advanced drones supplied by Turkey - caught India's forces off guard during one of the region's worst military escalations in decades.
The May conflict, triggered after an attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) that India blamed on Pakistan, saw waves of drone and missile strikes exchanged across the Line of Control.
Despite Indians modern air force, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shot down six Indian fighter jets, including at least three French Rafale fighters.
India was forced to recalibrate mid-conflict after the unexpected aerial losses and intelligence leaks, which defence planners now link directly to Chinese satellite and radar assistance for Islamabad.
India confirms Pakistan downed 'unspecified number' of fighter jets
For perspective, India is currently the world's second-largest arms importer, as per Bloomberg.
While India's relationship with China had been cautiously stabilising after their 2020 border clash, Singh's remarks have reopened old wounds - and forced New Delhi to admit that its integrated air defences and stockpiles were not fully prepared for a coordinated Pakistan-China front.
Emergency arsenal replenishment
In response, India has unleashed one of its biggest emergency weapons spending sprees in recent memory:
$12.3 billion in defence funds have been fast-tracked to aquire surface-to-air missiles, electronic warfare systems, armored recovery vehicles. The navy is set to acquire moored mines, mine countermeasures vessels, submersible autonomous vehicles and super rapid gun mounts. All equipment is meant to be produced in India, as per Bloomberg.
Major new orders include 100 K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzers from South Korea, multiple new Pinaka rocket regiments, and nearly 120 Pralay tactical ballistic missiles, meant to plug short-range strike gaps.
India's $230 million drone incentive plan, announced last week, aims to boost domestic production after Turkish-supplied Bayraktar drones gave Pakistan an unexpected edge in the skies, as per Reuters.
Indigenous production reforms
India's defence planners have also ordered an aggressive push to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers:
The Army now plans to phase out imports for 150 categories of ammunition by FY 2025–26, covering everything from artillery shells to tank rounds.
New indigenous artillery shells are under accelerated trials to meet a projected $1.2 billion demand over the next decade.
Defence procurement rules have been overhauled to slash acquisition cycles and remove bottlenecks.
Building integrated theatre commands
Beyond hardware, India's long-delayed push to reorganise its military structure is gaining urgency.
The creation of integrated theatre commands proposed earlier this year - bringing Army, Navy and Air Force assets under unified leadership - is now on fast track. Joint air defence commands will fuse the Army's battlefield radar network with the Air Force's Integrated Air Command and Control System, as well as the Navy's to plug any gaps.
The China factor: A new two-front reality
China's foreign ministry has yet to comment on Singh's remarks, while Pakistan maintains it did not orchestrate the Occupied Kashmir attack.
However, the episode has hardened views inside India's security establishment that any future conflict could again see Chinese satellites, radar feeds or cyber assets acting as a force multiplier for Pakistan.
'This makes urgent upgrades to our air defence posture non-negotiable,' Singh stressed on Friday, a clear signal that India's rearmament has become a necessity for the neighbour state.

Indian rupee falls for 2nd straight week

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee weakened slightly on Friday, falling for a second consecutive week, as the dollar recovered from a more than two-year low and outflows pressured local stocks. The rupee closed at 86.1475, down from its previous close of 86.0750, and 0.4% lower from a week earlier. India's benchmark equity index the Nifty 50, fell 0.7% this week, even as MSCI's gauge of regional stocks excluding Japan was 0.8% higher. In the near-term, the rupee is 'likely to hover closer to 86.50 than 85.50,' a trader at a large private bank said. Corporate dollar demand and equity outflows weighed on the Indian currency on the day, the trader said. Overseas investors have net sold about $300 million of Indian equities over July so far after infusing $1.7 billion in the previous month. The dollar index was on course for its second consecutive weekly rise, boosted by strong US economic data which diminished wagers on rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Interest rate futures markets are currently pricing in about 45 basis points of Fed rate cuts for the remainder of the year, down from closer to 50 basis points at the start of the week.

Lesco: CEO Butt highlights organisation performance

LAHORE: Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) CEO Ramzan Butt stated that during the successful operation 'Bunyan al-Marsus' in response to Indian aggression, Lesco stood alongside national security institutions. Under the directives of federal government, the Lesco established a special war room to ensure electricity supply to sensitive locations. The Lesco not only achieved record recoveries in these 100 days but also uncovered significant electricity theft scandals. The Lesco demonstrated outstanding performance last year by reducing losses of PKR 60 billion and exposing major electricity theft scandals, which is commendable. The Lesco took action against electricity theft, seizing 22,694,400 units valued at PKR 893,937,712. Of this, PKR 244,669,693 recovered, with 30,747 FIRs filed, 18,102 registered, and 716 individuals arrested. The Lesco also recovered Rs 1.895 billion from 42,588 defaulters. To address public complaints promptly, 13,744 court sessions were held, resolving 558 out of 585 overbilling complaints. Additionally, 1,088 complaints regarding faulty meters were resolved immediately, and 432 out of 444 transformer fault complaints were addressed. All 3,738 complaints regarding new connections were also resolved promptly. The longstanding issue of overbilling complaints has been diligently addressed, which was considered impossible just a few months ago. The Lesco successfully completed the annual maintenance of 123 grid stations. This maintenance work has proven crucial not only for enhancing the system's consistent performance but also for preventing overloads and faults, resulting in improved system performance and a reduction in complaints during the monsoon season. With the arrival of the monsoon season and Muharram, the Lesco has put all offices and operational teams on high alert. Additional materials were provided to ensure continuous electricity supply during Ashura. The Lesco has signed a historic agreement with CISNR aimed at digitizing the distribution network, reducing line losses, and promoting effective integration of solar energy. This agreement reflects Lesco's commitment to a digital and environmentally friendly future. New uniforms have been issued for line staff to enhance safety and identification, new mobile devices have been provided for meter readers, and a 'Lesco Safety Book' has been released for the protection of field staff. The Lesco has invited all vendors and manufacturers to register on the E-PADs digital portal to make the procurement system transparent, efficient, and modern. Special training programmes for female employees have been organized at Lesco's Regional Training Center (RTC), focusing on technical skills, safety measures, and administrative matters. These training programmes reflect Lesco's vision of promoting gender equality and inclusion. To ensure timely resolution of consumer complaints, 12 mini trucks have been provided to various offices for operational teams to ensure immediate response. The Lesco has successfully completed the project of undergrounding electricity wires around the Lahore Fort and Mall Road, aimed at enhancing the beauty of the city and preserving historical sites. This initiative is a significant step towards environmental and technical improvement. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Pakistan embassy to host matchmaking event for Pak, Chinese entrepreneurs

BEIJING: In a bid to attract investment and strengthen business ties, the Pakistan Embassy in China will organise a matchmaking event between Pakistani and Chinese entrepreneurs in Beijing by the end of next month. 'We are expecting 100 to 150 Pakistani business leaders or company representatives to visit China during the upcoming meeting of heads of government of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states. For them, we are arranging matchmaking sessions with nearly 300 Chinese companies,' Ghulam Qadir, Commercial Counsellor at Pakistan Embassy in Beijing said on Sunday. Talking to APP, he noted that meetings will be scheduled in advance, allowing participants to familiarise themselves beforehand. 'Rather than meeting for the first time on the event day— which usually leads to limited outcomes— we aim to facilitate meaningful connections through early engagement and preparation,' he explained. A ministerial committee led by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms, Ahsan Iqbal, has been formed to oversee the initiative. Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan serves as the convener, while Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, is the co-convener. Ghulam Qadir expressed optimism about the event's impact, anticipating significant results and long-term benefits. He highlighted seven priority sectors identified to boost Chinese investment and bilateral trade: Electric Vehicles (EVs) & Battery Storage, Solar Panel Manufacturing, Steel, Copper, Food & Agriculture, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), and Chemicals/ Petrochemicals. Qadir emphasised the potential of electronic vehicles or EVs in reducing Pakistan's fuel import bill, which amounts to billions of dollars annually. The government has launched a new EV policy and aims to attract more investment from companies like BYD, Geely, and Chery in Pakistan. The sectors including battery production, and charging infrastructure will also improve. With over $2 billion spent annually on solar panel imports, Pakistan is seeking to localize production. 'There are strong demand, an existing market, and the potential for exports,' he said, noting that local manufacturing will cut imports and generate jobs. The government is also looking to introduce green steel technology from China, Qadir noted, adding that steel is essential for EVs, construction, and other key industries. Pakistan offers ample land and demand for setting up such industries. Currently, Pakistan exports raw copper worth around $1 billion. 'We aim to process and refine copper locally, increasing export value to $4–5 billion with the right investments,' he said, adding that collaboration with Chinese firms is crucial. Terming food and agriculture sectors the backbone of the economy, Qadir said the government is focusing on improving crop yields, livestock quality, and food processing capabilities. This would enable Pakistan to export surplus agricultural products to meet China's growing demand. In the area of Information & Communication Technology, Pakistan has a skilled and cost-effective tech workforce, while China has a huge market,' he said, emphasising the scope for partnerships in the ICT sector. Pakistan imports significant volumes of oil and petroleum products. 'We are encouraging joint ventures with Chinese companies for investment and technology transfer in petrochemical sectors which would help serve local needs and open up export opportunities,' he said. Qadir concluded by stressing the need for robust cooperation in these seven sectors, alongside chemicals and petrochemicals. He stated that such partnerships will drive technology transfer, attract foreign investment, expand local manufacturing, increase exports, and create employment opportunities in Pakistan.
