Cardinals RB James Conner likes to get downhill, not dance around
Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner finished the 2024 NFL season with 236 carries, 14th in the league, but he ranked No. 11 with a career-high 1,094 rushing yards and scored eight rushing touchdowns for the beloved Cardinals franchise.
Whether offensive coordinator Drew Petzing prioritizes the run or makes the pass game primary, Conner will continue to train to be the endurance-built physical runner he has been heading into his ninth NFL season. Conner's play style doesn't make for the most astonishing of highlights, but defensive coordinators know they must account for him and his tenacious downhill running style. Conner could potentially be even more impactful if he begins avoiding attrition. Petzing can accomplish this by optimizing a dual-threat rushing attack, allowing second-year running back Trey Benson to be more involved.
With eight touchdowns last season, Conner has shown his power and determination in the red zone and short-yardage situations. Petzing should note this and frequently defer to Conner when the Cardinals have red-zone opportunities. Rather than do all sorts of lateral dancing, Petzing can count on Conner to head north and south when his number is called in the offense and work as a feasible pass blocker when the team chooses to air it out.
Ultimately, the Cardinals will want to continue using Conner in increments to keep the defense honest. If Petzing can mainatin a balanced attack through 2025, the Cardinals offense will be very difficult to defend.

Cowboys may have stumbled into a superstar as a second-round pick angles toward starting
The Dallas Cowboys needed help at defensive end for the 2025 season. Facing the loss of long-time starter and multiple-time Pro Bowler DeMarcus Lawrence, the team needed reinforcements. The club had drafted the position, highly, but had yet to reap any dominating rewards. So when the opportunity presented itself to secure themselves the potential steal of the 2025 draft, they jumped on it Dallas secured the services of perhaps the best pass-rushing defensive end of the draft when they drafted Boston College's Donovan Ezeiruaku. But pre-draft accolades don't matter if it doesn't manifest itself on a pro field, and while training camp isn't the real thing, what Ezeiruaku has shown in Oxnard has a lot of people extremely excited. Rundown Position: Defensive End Age: 21 Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 248 pounds Hometown: Williamstown, NJ High School: Williamstown College: Boston College (Highlights) Draft: 2025 Second Round (No. 44 overall) Acquired: 2025 draft Contract: Four-year contract (2025), $10.2 million 2025 Base Salary: $840,000, $1.85 million cap hit Profile With Micah Parsons not participating in practice due to his contract dispute, Ezeiruaku has been declaring himself as a true force to reckon with. Lining up primarily as a left defensive end, Ezeiruaku has shown a complex rush attack that is far beyond his years. He's also displayed the ability to set the edge, looking like he's ready to take on a starting role sooner rather than later. Dallas brought back Dante Fowler, who left for a season in Washington, and the expectation was that he'd be starting opposite Parsons, but that may not be the case and if it is may not be for long. The Cowboys also signed Payton Turner, a former first-round pick like Fowler, as veteran depth. They join last year's second rounder Marshawn Kneeland as Parsons' supporting cast. That's before mentioning 2022 second-round pick Sam Williams, who is looking to return from an ACL injury. Together, the Cowboys have assembled a tremendously pedigreed group at defensive end, but Ezeiruaku looks like a potential breakout star amongst the room. David White named NFLPA's interim executive director
The NFL Players Association named David White, the former head of Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, as its new interim executive director, the union announced Sunday night. The announcement comes after Lloyd Howell Jr. stepped down on July 17 following controversies surrounding his leadership. Advertisement 'David has spent much of his career fighting for collectively bargained rights in the labor movement and is committed to putting players first in all the union does,' NFLPA president Jalen Reeves-Maybin wrote in a statement Sunday. 'We are confident that he will inspire solidarity and provide the necessary stability during this period of transition.' Reeves-Maybin said that the NFLPA plans to soon begin a search process for a permanent executive director. A high-ranking executive in the NFL offices told The Athletic last month that the league did not anticipate that whoever was named the interim executive director would be promoted to the full-time role. This story will be updated.
