Freddie Prinze Jr thinks Saw made other horror films seem 'funny'

Perth Now08-07-2025
Freddie Prinze Jr. thinks Saw turned other horror films into comedies.
The 49-year-old actor - who will reprise his role as Ray Bronson in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel - has opened up on how James Wan's 2004 horror film changed how fans reacted to the slasher genre after movies like Scream in the 1990s.
Speaking to Extra, he recalled: "Every 10 years, horror films kind of evolve, right?
"And it happens much more quickly than comedies or dramas or action movies or anything like that.
"And we had just come from a time when horror movies weren't really being respected. And it took Wes [Craven] to come in and kind of remind people… 'Look what you can do with a low budget but a great script that's character-driven with wonderful set pieces'...
'[After Scream] they started taking swings on other scripts. And they started giving opportunities to other scripts and ideas.
'All of a sudden Saw came out, which makes our movies not scary anymore… and kids are like, 'Well, now I've seen this, so now your movie's funny.' '
A few years before Saw, the Scary Movie franchise launched in 2000 and spoofed other horror films, including the original I Know What You Did Last Summer from 1997.
Although Freddie hasn't seen the parody films, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson - the writer and director for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel - is a huge fan.
She admitted: "My dream — because they're rebooting Scary Movie — is for them to rip this movie in the new Scary Movie… That would be such an ultimate for me.'
The first movie - based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan - hit cinemas in 1997 and was followed by a second installment I Still Know What You Did Last Summer a year later, and I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer in 2006 as well as a 2021 TV series.
Now, the franchise is being revived with a new legacy sequel featuring original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr.
Director Robinson previously teased the new movie is going to be much more gory than the original.
She told PEOPLE: "[The horror elements are] ratcheted up to a hundred in this - it's much more brutal ...
"There's definitely more methodology to every kill in this movie, unlike the first, which is kind of just him [the killer] stalking them and going after them.
"There's not a lot of gore or blood or violence in the first one. There certainly is in this one."
And while old fans can get "excited about the Easter eggs", she wanted the new film to be accessible to newcomers.
She added: "[We] approached it like super fans, so I think people are going to be really happy. All the things that you want to see in this movie, you're going to see in this movie ...
"We very purposefully wanted to make this movie both for fans of the original who are coming to this and excited about the Easter eggs but also for a new audience that can find I Know and almost watch the first one like a prequel.
"That was very front of mind for me as we made this movie. You don't need to do any research coming into I Know What You Did Last Summer. You just have to have a really good time."

Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon played disgusting pranks after rows

Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon would play gross pranks on each other after an argument, according to Lita Ford. The Runaways star was managed by Sharon when she embarked on her solo career so the musician became good friends with her as well as her Black Sabbath rocker husband - and Lita has recalled the disgusting lengths the couple would go to get revenge after they'd had a falling out. She told the Guardian newspaper: "With Sharon being my manager, Ozzy was always there. They were crazy. The stuff they did to each other – it wasn't like any other relationship I've ever known. "They were perfect for each other, that's for sure, because he could dish it out and she could dish it out even bigger. "She and Ozzy would play games with each other to let the other know they've p***** them off. You'd walk through a hotel and you'd see a pair of shoes out in the hallway, and you'd think: I wonder why Ozzy's shoes are there? "Well, Sharon had had enough of him, and she'd c****** in his shoes. And then of course he would c*** in her shoes at a later date. He'd get her back." Lita also recalled a time when she introduced Sharon and Ozzy to her parents over an Easter meal - revealing the rocker downed a whole bottle of wine and then accidentally threw the roast lamb on the floor. She explained: "They came to my parents' house one day for Easter dinner, and my mom had roasted a leg of lamb. Sharon and Ozzy come in, and Ozzy chugs a bottle of wine. "He doesn't drink the wine in a glass, he just drinks it out of the bottle, like it's the last little bit of fluid he's ever going to taste. "And he starts sinking lower and lower into the chair until the wine's gone. And then my father asks Ozzy to cut the lamb. Ozzy starts, but it slips off the plate and goes underneath the table. Ozzy says: 'I'm sorry, I don't eat meat!' My dad laughed his a** off." Ozzy died on Tuesday (22.07.25) at the age of 76 just two weeks after he reunited with his Black Sabbath bandmates for their big Back To The Beginning concert in their hometown of Birmingham, England - and Lita says the rocker went out "like a king". She added: "Whether he could stand up and walk or not, he still delivered the songs, and the band killed it. I hate to say it, but it's kind of the way to go: like a king. They call him the Prince of Darkness, but maybe he's a bit bigger than that now."

Billy Joel: I didn't enjoy Woodstock

Billy Joel "didn't enjoy" Woodstock. The 76-year-old star attended the legendary music festival in 1969, but he didn't actually have much fun at all. He told People: "I didn't enjoy it, to tell you the truth. "I wanted to see [Jimi] Hendrix. I wanted to see The Who, and I missed them. I just saw the first day. And it was so muddy and rainy and messy and no place to use the bathroom, and everybody was drugged out. I wasn't doing drugs or anything back then." Despite this, Billy can understand why so many people remember the festival so fondly. The singer also appreciates the "communal aspect" of the festival. He said: "I got that. And same thing with what I loved about the Beatles. I loved the Beatles, but I recognised, as I grew, it wasn't just about the Beatles. It was about us. "I had a lot in common with my fellow boomers who were listening to the Beatles. 'This is great. Everybody's on the same page. We're all growing up and listening to this stuff.' I really appreciate that about my own generation." Billy is the focus of a new HBO documentary series called Billy Joel: And So It Goes, but the veteran star recently admitted that he was hesitant about committing to the project. He told People: "I've resisted this kind of thing for so long. I'm sick of talking about myself. Some of the stupid stuff I did, that's painful to talk about. (But) they asked me for some thematic guidance. I said, 'Just tell the truth.'" The chart-topping star initially just wanted to get the documentary - which features contributions from his family and friends - "over with" because he doesn't enjoy talking about himself. The Uptown Girl hitmaker - who is one of the best-selling artists of all time - said: "My goal was to get it over with. "When I do interviews, people just ask you about yourself and you get a little self-conscious about it eventually. It's almost embarrassing. "When you're talking about your personal life detached from the material ... I suppose there's a little bit of wariness involved."

Zac Brown's Las Vegas residency will tell a 'personal story'

Zac Brown plans to tell a "very personal story" during his Las Vegas residency. The 46-year-old singer is set to perform at the Sphere in Las Vegas later this year, and Zac's show will explore the ups and downs of his life. He told People: "I'm telling my very personal story that I've never really told, of what drove me into music and how music's been there to save my life over and over again." Zac is convinced that his show will be bigger and better than anything he's done previously. He said: "It's going to be a wild ride coming to this show. "I've never been able to have the budget or the time to really create something that's this big before." Zac thinks the Sphere is the perfect location for his residency. The singer explained: "The last three or four years I've been trying to think of how we can create a spectacle that really elevates the experience that we can give to our fans. And I think back to when Pink Floyd came out with The Wall and the size and scale of their production that they came out with. What is that thing for us? What is our Wall? "Then I found out about the building at the Sphere and I went to visit when it was under construction. Seeing and hearing everything that they had, I was like, 'This is the place to do it. And this is one of those years to really bet on ourselves.'" Zac is already looking forward to performing in front of his fans in Las Vegas. He said: "I'm just an ordinary person, but you can do extraordinary things with an extraordinary effort, and all of the hardest things that you've ever been through end up serving you in some way. And sharing my story is really just about sharing more of that humanity and how we're all connected. "I love the title Love and Fear because you can base all your decisions based on one of those two things. You either move forward with love and get back up on the horse and keep going and persevere or you become a victim of something and kind of stuck in the mud."
