G-SHOCK's DW-5000R is a retro revival that earns its heritage
Casio
announced they were bringing back the original 1983
G-SHOCK
, I had mixed feelings. The watch industry loves a good heritage story, and sometimes that nostalgia ends up doing more work than the actual product. But there was something intriguing about their approach to the DW-5000R. Instead of just applying vintage styling to a modern watch, they went back to the original hand-drawn blueprints from an era before CAD existed.
Three weeks of daily wear later, the DW-5000R has proven to be more thoughtful than your typical vintage reissue. Casio rebuilt it from the ground up while keeping the original's core appeal. It feels like what the 1983 model would be with access to today's manufacturing and materials.
Details matter more than you'd think
The first thing you notice when you strap this on is how right it feels on your wrist. Here's what Casio did well: they made the DW-5000R look and feel like the original while improving its performance. The flat bezel is a good example. Previous G-SHOCK reissues had raised sections around the text for extra protection, which worked but broke the clean visual lines that made the 1983 model so appealing. Instead of accepting that compromise, Casio slightly enlarged the case to accommodate modern shock-resistant requirements while keeping that smooth, vintage aesthetic.

The attention to detail extends to things you might not immediately notice but definitely feel. The strap dimples are positioned exactly where they were on the original. The buttons have the right amount of tactile feedback. Even the "JAPAN" marking at the bottom of the dial, a subtle nod to the fact this is made in Japan, unlike most modern
G-SHOCKs
, adds authenticity without being flashy about it. These aren't the kinds of details that show up in marketing materials, but they're what make the difference between a watch that looks vintage and one that genuinely captures the spirit of the original.
The classic square case with its iconic red accents has a presence that's confident without being aggressive. Even though case size increased slightly from 41.6mm to 42.3mm to accommodate modern components, it isn't like modern G-SHOCKs that dominates your entire wrist, and as someone who isn't a big fan of that I find it refreshingly understated. And if you've had the 40-year old watch with you, you won't even notice it's bigger. What you will notice is how well-proportioned everything feels.
How to rebuild a classic without losing its soul for dummies
The real story of the DW-5000R happens underneath that vintage exterior. The original DW-5000C had to meet basic shock and water resistance standards from 1983. This recreation has to pass over 100 different criteria that modern G-SHOCKs face, which meant essentially rebuilding everything internal while keeping the external appearance intact.
Kikuo Ibe's original shock-resistant structure, that clever hollow construction that suspends the module with minimal contact points, remains the foundation. But the cushioning materials, positioning, and internal components have all been updated to meet current reliability standards.
Ibe's 'Triple 10' philosophy that stated every G-SHOCK should be water resistant to at least 10 bars (10atm – 100 metres) as well as survive a minimum 10 metre drop, is one upped. So, the DW-5000R has 200-meter or 20 bar water resistance.
All in all, the module feels more stable during impact, but you only notice this when you accidentally bang the watch against something solid. The improved sealing keeps moisture out more effectively, but you only appreciate this when you're washing dishes or caught in unexpected rain.
The LED backlight upgrade makes a meaningful difference in daily use. Where the original might leave you squinting in dim lighting, this display stays crisp and readable. Battery life jumping from about two years to nearly five means you'll spend less time thinking about maintenance and more time just wearing it. These improvements aren't revolutionary, but they're exactly the kinds of practical upgrades that make a vintage design viable for modern life.
It's a typical Casio watch, so the basic features - stopwatch, alarm, calendar - are all there when you need them but stay out of your way otherwise. Though, there's no smartphone connectivity, no fitness tracking, no notifications buzzing your wrist every few minutes, and that is something I've started to prefer lately.
If you look past it's retro revival tag, the
G-SHOCK DW-5000R
serve as the most reliable, unobtrusive timepiece you can strap to your wrist. I've been wearing it for daily activities, morning coffee runs, work meetings, evening workouts, weekend hikes. It's the kind of watch that works just as well with weekend jeans as it does with a button-down shirt, though you'll probably find yourself reaching for it more often on days when you want something dependable and unpretentious. And for it's price of Rs 14,995, it isn't even asking you to crack open your piggy bank.

Exclusive - Anupam Bhattacharya on Ishaani moving to prime-time slot: The pressure to maintain TRPs becomes imminent
Actor Anupam Bhattacharya's show Ishaani has now shifted to a prime-time slot, and while this move brings excitement, it also means added pressure for the cast and crew. Anupam, who plays the pivotal role of Shashwat in the show, says the shift is sure to give them more audience, and higher ratings. 'The show has moved to a prime time slot and yes, it does add to the pressure as the audience base also grows much wider with new time slots, and hence the pressure for the show to maintain TRP becomes imminent. Even though it should not affect the actors, we cannot escape its impact on the show,' he says. Talking about what makes the show resonate with the viewers, he adds, 'I feel engaging storytelling with a solid premise is an elementary part of a show to grow on its audience, and I have complete confidence in Leenaji ( Leena Gangopadhyay ) to develop an extremely interesting and groovy plot with characters that set the show apart from its contemporaries. The USP of this show is its premise itself, which tells a story of resilience and strength of a woman trapped in an abusive marriage, which constantly creates challenges for her to sustain and prevail—played brilliantly by Megha Chakraborty.' Reflecting on his own journey, the actor says, 'My journey as Shashwat has been amazing, showing various character traits. It's intense and gives the story its source of conflict, hence very important in driving the story through its various situations which keeps the audience engaged.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jolie-Pitt Family Shows Support For Shiloh's Change Drivepedia Undo He adds, 'Shashwat shows complex character traits and adds flavours to the show.
