Sean Payton comments on Broncos' tough roster cuts
Two of the crowded positions that could lead to headaches are running back and defensive end. At running back, the Broncos have six players competing for three or four spots. On the defensive line, there appear to be seven strong contenders for six spots.
'We're definitely deeper," Denver coach Sean Payton said when asked about the team's depth compared to a year ago. "You guys have written about tough decisions, tough decisions at running back, tough decisions at receiver. Those are all indications that there is a little bit more depth maybe than in years past. Generally speaking, that creates that higher level of performance, that competition.
"Then how do we keep trying to give these guys opportunities where it gives us more of an exposure? We're not even halfway, and I mean that. We're not halfway. ... How do I get [Pat] Bryant a few receptions in the game, how do I handle the running back rotation this week different than last week? The same way with us on defense at certain positions. Those are all things that we discuss during the week and try to manufacture.'
J.K. Dobbins and second-round draft pick RJ Harvey are presumably safe at running back. That leaves Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie, Blake Watson and Audric Estime competing for the final two spots.
On the defensive line, Zach Allen, D.J. Jones, John Franklin-Myers, Malcolm Roach and third-round pick Sai'vion Jones are all safe. That leaves Jordan Jackson and Eyioma Uwazurike competing for one final spot. It would be hard to part with either Jackson or Uwazurike.
The position battles will be sorted out over the next two preseason games. Once the roster cuts begin, we'll have full coverage of Denver's moves on Broncos Wire.

Broncos vs. Cardinals: 5 things Denver fans should know
Ahead of the Denver Broncos' preseason showdown with the Arizona Cardinals, we asked Jess Root of Cards Wire five questions about Arizona and Saturday's game. Check out our questions and Root's answers below. 1. Should we expect Cardinals starters to play much on Saturday? I'm not sure. In the two previous years with this coaching staff, starters have not played in the preseason game following joint practices, but they have had two joint practices rather than one. I don't know if that will make a difference. (Editor's note: After we asked this question, Broncos coach Sean Payton revealed that Denver and Arizona will both rest most of their starters.) 2. Who is an underrated Arizona player that we should keep an eye on? I'll go with a couple on offense and another on defense. On offense, on the second unit, watch second-year tight end Tip Reiman. He is a mauler as a blocker and has upside as a pass catcher. Also watch second-year receiver Xavier Weaver, who, of course, played at Colorado. He scored a touchdown, had a couple of catches and drew a pass interference last week. He made the team last year and can again. On defense, watch safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson. He will look a lot like Budda Baker in his play style. 3. Arizona got Baron Browning from the Broncos for a 6th-round pick last fall. How has he looked and what kind of role will he have this season? He is likely the No. 3 edge guy in the rotation behind Josh Sweat and Zaven Collins. He will play a lot. 4. If you were starting the Cardinals from scratch and had to choose between Kyler Murray and Bo Nix, who would you pick? I'm still a big Kyler fan and want to see if Nix has any higher ceiling than what he has shown already. I think Murray's ceiling is as high as the best in the league so I always take him. 5. The chances of the Broncos and Cards meeting in the Super Bowl this season are … ? Not impossible! And that is saying something. The Cardinals have a shot at being good. So do the Broncos. So while unlikely, the fact that I don't just laugh means something. It's definitely not an impossibility. Saturday's game will be nationally televised on NFL Network and available on these channels. Northallerton RUFC enjoy busy summer with tournaments and cricket
With pre-season training already underway for both the senior men's and women's teams at Northallerton Rugby Union Football Club , it's a good moment to look back on what club members have been up to over the summer break. A highlight was the annual NRUFC touch rugby tournament, which now spans six weeks and includes 15 teams from across North Yorkshire. The tournament, which is a staple in the local sporting calendar, saw increased participation this year, providing an opportunity for younger players to develop alongside social teams. The Ladies' rugby team in action (Image: Supplied) The more serious contenders battled it out for the title, prize pot, and bragging rights. The Borrowby Broncos retained their title from last year. Elsewhere, the ladies' team eagerly participated in pre-season training under coach Robbo and entered a team in the Ripon RUFC 7s tournament in early July. They faced local teams, Ripon and Wensleydale, alongside touring teams, the Viper 7s and Filthy Fifths. In their opening fixture against the hosts, Ripon Bluebelles, Northallerton ladies secured a 5-43 victory, with tries from Ali O'Brien, Trinity Earnshaw, Amy Parker, and Emma Lawson. Cricket provided a way for club members to stay connected through sociable Thursday evening league games (Image: Supplied) The second match against the experienced Viper 7s saw Northallerton defend against a relentless onslaught of attacking play. Despite a solo try from O'Brien, the match ended 7-52 in favour of the Vipers. Their last group game against Wensleydale RUFC was a closely fought contest, with a final score of 7-14 to Northallerton, thanks to a decisive try by Gina Fothergill. The semi-final against the Filthy Fifths ended with a score of Northallerton 0 – Filthy Fifths 41. Despite the loss, the team thoroughly enjoyed their day and represented the club with pride. The team expressed their gratitude to Ripon for hosting and to all the supporters who cheered them on. The club also participated in cricket over the summer, with NRUFCCC providing a way for club members to stay connected through sociable Thursday evening league games. With renovations at Brompton Lodge, the team played all of their ten league fixtures away from home for the second season running. Their performance saw an improvement with a whole game won and several close-run scores. It is always encouraging to see how many players of a wide range of abilities want to take part and for any readers who would like to get involved in the cricket team next season, please do contact the club on social media or call in during the rugby season to find out more. Now, the focus is back on the upcoming rugby season, with pre-season training well underway. The ladies' first XV has been promoted to NC2 and the men's first XV will again compete in Yorkshire 2. The club is keen to build fitness levels for the upcoming trials. Nick Wright suggests Bo Nix is the next Mac Jones
Nick Wright wants to be starting something. Speaking on his "What's Wright?" show, Nick Wright and Cowherd spent time talking about the latest happenings in the NFL. Wright spoke on his expectations for Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, and he made a, say, rather interesting comparison. Wright believes that former quarterback Mac Jones, who suffered a sharp decline after a solid rookie season, is a great comparison for Nix. A stretch? Maybe. But check the clip below to see what Wright said. Wright compared Nix's Pro Bowl alternate nod, Denver's 10 wins and the Broncos getting knocked out of the playoffs by the Buffalo Bills to Jones' rookie season, suggesting that Nix will now have a similar career outcome. I'd say Wright is off the mark for two reasons: 1) Nix has Sean Payton and 2) Mac Jones never had Sean Payton. With Payton ready to take the Broncos to the next level in year three, it appears he has big plans to make Nix a superstar quarterback. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
