FASTag update: NHAI to blacklist ‘Loose FASTags'; 5 things travellers must know
Tired of too many ads? go ad free now
In a recent directive, NHAI has issued to immediately blacklist 'loose' FASTags—those not properly fixed to the vehicle's windscreen. So if you are planning a road trip with a loose FASTag, get in line.
On this note, let's have a look at India's toll plazas, here's what you need to know to avoid fines and delays.
NHAI to Blacklist 'Loose' FASTags
Starting now, FASTags in hand or loosely placed won't be accepted. Drivers need to fix them to the windshield else they will be blacklisted by toll operators.
The move is part of a broader crackdown on fraudulent use of FASTags. The policy aims to enforce proper tagging protocols. Once blacklisted, these tags cannot be used to pay tolls electronically, and vehicles will be denied entry through FASTag lanes.
Aims at preventing fraud and traffic
This main aim of the move is to stop drivers from misusing tags by transferring them between vehicles. In addition to this, hand handled tags also slow down lane operations causing long queues at toll plazas.
By eliminating such misuse, NHAI hopes to make toll transactions faster and traffic movement more efficient.
New FASTag Rules in 2025
NHAI is rolling out stricter measures as part of the updated FASTag policy for 2025:
Only one FASTag per vehicle will be allowed.
All FASTag users must complete KYC with their issuing bank or app.
Tags that remain inactive for over 30 days or are misused repeatedly (more than twice a month) may be blacklisted automatically.
These steps aim to ensure genuine usage and reduce operational inefficiencies on national highways.

Blacklisted tags immediate lane denial
If your tag is blacklisted, it will immediately get 'Blacklist'. It will remain no longer valid at any toll plaza across India. This means travellers will either have to pay tolls in cash—where permitted—or face rejection at FASTag-exclusive lanes. Blacklisted tags are flagged centrally, and toll booth systems are updated in real time. A 48-hour warning may be issued before full deactivation in some cases, depending on the violation type.
What to Do if your FASTag is blocked
If your FASTag gets blacklisted due to being loose or inactive, the first step is to contact your issuing bank or digital wallet provider. Fix the tag securely on the windscreen using adhesive backing, recharge your balance, and complete KYC if pending. Once the issue is resolved, the tag can be reinstated after a formal request and verification.
As road travel becomes increasingly digital and toll plazas go cashless, proper FASTag usage is no longer optional—it's mandatory.

Nearly 27,000 people died in national highway road accidents during Jan-June 2025, says Gadkari
As many as 26,770 people died in road accidents on the national highways across India in the first six months (January-June) of 2025. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Wednesday has informed the Rajya Sabha that as many as 52,609 fatal accidents took place in 2024 on the national highways across the country. The union minister informed the Parliament that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has installed the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on high traffic density national highways and national expressways such as Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Trans-Haryana, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Delhi Mumbai Expressway, etc. "ATMS has provisions for various electronic enforcement devices which help in speedy identification of incidents on highway stretches and effectively monitor highways, thereby improving the response time of the on-site assistance," he said. Further, ATMS is also implemented as a standalone project in already constructed important corridors, he said. Responding to a separate question, the union minister said that road safety audit has been conducted for 112,561 km of national highways during the last three years. Road accidents are a major public health concern in India, with more than 450,000 reported accidents responsible for over 150,000 deaths in 2022. Every year, the country witnesses lakhs of road accidents, which result in the deaths of many people, while leaving a larger number of people wounded and often critically handicapped as well. Two-wheelers are often the most involved vehicles in fatal road accidents. Some of the key reasons behind the road accidents on national highways and national expressways include overspeeding, riding two-wheelers without helmets, etc. Pedestrians not using the proper underpasses or designated places for crossing the roads is also a major reason behind many road accidents. Major hill collapse along under-construction NH-66
Kasaragod: In yet another incident exposing the serious safety lapses and risks plaguing the under construction NH-66 stretches in the state, a major portion of a hill collapsed onto the road at Veeramala near Cheruvathoor in Kasaragod around 10.15am on Wednesday. However, a major tragedy was averted due to low traffic at the time. Sindhu, a teacher at SN Teacher Training Institute, Padannakkad, was traveling in her car on the highway. On seeing the landslide on her left side, she drove her car as far to the right as possible to escape from the flowing soil. But her vehicle's front portion was totally covered by mud and debris, trapping her inside. However, locals immediately pulled her out of the car. According to locals, a bike rider was just in front of the car at the time of the mishap. Fortunately, he too had a narrow escape. The concrete wall constructed on the side of NH to prevent mud falling from the hillock was totally damaged in the incident. Traffic movement was completely disrupted as tonnes of soil and debris tumbled onto the road. Fire and rescue personnel, along with locals, launched an operation to clear the road. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Canadians Can Claim A Free Hearing Test (If You Live In These Postal Codes) Best Hearing Aids Undo Vehicular movement was diverted through Madakkara-Kottappuram-Nileswaram route. Meanwhile, district collector K Imbasekar and M Rajagopal, MLA, visited the spot. Collector instructed the district disaster management authority to take immediate action. The area had witnessed a similar incident recently. At that time, a man engaged in road work was seriously injured. A drone inspection held in presence of the district collector had confirmed the possibility of landslide at the site. The team also found that unscientific excavation was the reason for the back-to-back landslips. NHAI had debarred the concessionaire Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd from participating in future bids after the collapse of slope protection works in Chengala-Neeleshwaram section of NH-66 at Cherkala in Kasaragod on June 16. NHAI found that improper design, inadequate slope protection works and poor drainage system caused the incident. "The concessionaire has been debarred from participating in future bids due to their failure to execute adequate slope protection works and make proper drainage systems to mitigate such risks," NHAI had said in a release. A show-cause notice was issued to the concessionaire for debarment of one year, including imposing a fine of upto Rs 9 crore. NHAI had said the NH development project was undertaken on hybrid annuity mode, where the concessionaire has to maintain the section for 15 years and would reconstruct the slope protection at their own cost. Traffic restriction Following the landslide, the collector imposed a restriction on traffic movement on the stretch until NHAI submits a report regarding the site's safety. Vehicles moving towards Cheruvathoor and Payyannur from Kanhangad should divert to Kottappuram-Madakkara route from the NH at Nileshwaram. Vehicles proceeding towards Kanhangad and Nileshwaram from Payyanur should move on Kothayimukku-Chemeni-Kayyur-Chayyoth route. No vehicle would be allowed to pass on NH via Cheruvathoor after 10pm on July 23. The restriction will continue until further orders, said the collector.
