Centre's wheat procurement at MSP rises to 3-yr high

Hans India07-06-2025
New Delhi: The government has procured 29.92 million tonnes (MT) of wheat during the 2025–26 Rabi marketing season (April–June) which represents a 13 per cent increase over the corresponding figure for the same period of the previous year and is the highest in the last three years, according to a senior official.
This procurement is from a total 40.42 MT that arrived in the markets of the main wheat producing states across the country. The remaining portion has been bought by millers and traders at a price that cannot be less than the Minimum Support Price (MSP) paid by the government.
A small quantity of wheat is still reported to be reaching the mandis in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The procurement is considered sufficient for distribution through the Public Distribution System and market intervention schemes to keep prices under control.
At present, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has wheat stock of 36.65 MT which exceeds the buffer requirement of 27.58 MT for July 1, the official said.
The top four states contributing to wheat procurement include Punjab (11.93 MT), Madhya Pradesh (7.77 MT), Haryana (7.14 MT) and Rajasthan (2.02 MT).
The agriculture ministry has estimated wheat production at a record 117.5 MT during the 2024-25 crop year (July-June), an increase of 3.7 per cent over the previous year.
The average mandi prices on Thursday across key producing states were: Punjab (Rs2,475/quintal), Madhya Pradesh (Rs2,521/quintal), Rajasthan (Rs2,465/quintal) and Haryana (Rs2,425/quintal). The modal retail price of wheat was Rs28/kg.

HUL's Q1 net up 6% to Rs 2,768 cr

New Delhi: FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) on Thursday reported a 5.97 per cent rise in its consolidated net profit to Rs2,768 crore for the June quarter of FY26, helped by gains from a re-estimation of taxes paid in the previous year. The company had logged a net profit of Rs2,612 crore in the April-June quarter a year ago, according to a regulatory filing from HUL, the maker of popular brands as Dove, Lifebuoy, Lux, Lakmé, and Sunsilk. Revenue from the sale of products of the leading FMCG firm was up 5.15 per cent at Rs16,296 crore in the June quarter, led by volume growth. This was at Rs15,497 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago. 'HUL reported a consolidated underlying Sales Growth (USG) of 5 per cent and an Underlying Volume Growth (UVG) of 4 per cent,' the company said in its earnings statement. In the June quarter, HUL's profit before tax was lower by 6.4 per cent to Rs3,303 on a year-on-year basis. It was at Rs3,529 crore in the corresponding June quarter of FY25. While its Profit after Tax (PAT) was up nearly 6 per cent. Commenting on the results, HUL CEO and Managing Director Rohit Jawa said FMCG demand has continued to remain stable, with a gradual uptick in recency. 'Encouraged by favourable macro-economic indicators, we strategically stepped up our investments to effectively advance our portfolio transformation agenda in this quarter. As a result, we delivered competitive, broad-based growth with an Underlying Sales Growth of 5 per cent, driven by an Underlying Volume Growth of 4 per cent, at a consolidated level,' he said. Over the outlook, Jawa said he expects this 'gradual recovery to be sustained'. The company's market valuation surged by Rs19,936.28 crore to Rs5,92,531.67 crore. The stock emerged as the biggest gainer among the Sensex and Nifty firms. According to HUL, the difference 'is on account of a one-off impact of re-estimation of tax provisions with respect to the potential disallowance of certain expenses pertaining to prior years.' During the quarter, HUL's EBITDA margin stood at 22.8 per cent, down 130 basis points year-on-year, as the FMCG major continued to step up investments in its business.

ESR's claim of beneficiaries of property tax discount for green building norms compliance doubling under PMC questioned

1 2 Pune: PMC's latest Environment Status Report (ESR), published on Tuesday, shows that the beneficiaries of its 'green building norm property tax discount' doubled in the last six years. However, are these effects reflecting on ground? This is the question being asked by citizens, activists and experts, while demanding better scrutiny of compliance from the civic administration. The 'green discount' of 5-10% in property tax is offered to property owners who have installed solar and vermicomposting systems. Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) ESR data states that around 86,000 property owners benefited from it in 2019-20, rising to around 1.5 lakh in 2024-25. Beneficiaries crossed the 1-lakh milestone in 2020-21 for the first time and remained above this mark till the last financial year (FY). Refuting this, PMC officials claimed they conduct surprise checks and direct property owners to maintain the facilities if any shortcomings are found during the visits. As per PMC data, civic areas hosted around 8.5 lakh properties prior to 2017. After the merger of 11 villages, this increased to around 10 lakh. Thereafter, nearly 2 lakh properties were added to the tax ambit of PMC after the merger of 23 villages in 2021. At present, the total number of properties under PMC limits is at least 12.5 lakh. PMC set a target of Rs2,492.83 crore in revenue from building permissions for FY 2024-25, and a similar expectation of Rs2,549.79 crore from the property tax department. Interestingly, while the property tax department mopped up around Rs2,360 crore in this fiscal, the building permissions department surpassed its collection as well as its own target, drawing in around Rs2,600 crore. In the previous 2023-24 fiscal as well, the building permissions department earned over Rs2,300 crore, surging ahead of property tax collections of around Rs2,268 crore. Amid the evident rise in building permissions in the city, activists are insisting that vigilance must be heightened to ensure green compliance. Social activist Vijay Kumbhar said that PMC needs to ensure regular inspections. "The civic body made this installation of green facilities compulsory, so many societies have done it. Now, PMC should make sure these are functional," he told TOI. Suhas Patwardhan, chairman of the Pune District Co-Operative Housing Federation, echoed, "These facilities are the need of the hour. They are not only helping housing societies but are also good for the environment by reducing use of fossil fuels. Our organisation creates awareness to promote such facilities in societies. However, the implementation definitely lacks consistency." Avinash Sakpal, head of PMC's property tax department, told TOI, "The civic administration carries out surveys annually with the help of ward offices. If any property owner is found to have failed in maintaining the facilities, health officials of ward offices submit reports, and the tax discount is scrapped accordingly."
